Jack McKeon is proving why 80 is the new 45.
And although there are some doubters who feel that a major league manager who is just 20 years shy of 100 can?t possibly keep with with rigors of a regular season schedule, McKeon believes otherwise.
?I look at it this way: Why should experience get penalized? Eighty doesn?t mean a thing. I?m not 80. My birth certificate says that, but I?m not 80.?
Nearly six years after McKeon retired as the Florida Marlins? manager, he returned to his former job on an interim basis and will lead the team for the rest of the season.
?I?ve managed since I was 14 years old,? he jokingly said. ?I?ll probably manage until I?m 95.?
Just to give you some indication as to how long McKeon has actually managed, when he managed his first game in the minor leagues, in 1956, the Brooklyn Dodgers were the reigning champions. He becomes the second-oldest manager in major league history. Connie Mack managed the Philadelphia Athletics in a suit, tie and straw hat until 1950, when he was 87.
People may live longer today, but most around baseball would agree that what McKeon is doing is pretty extraordinary.
?I hope I?m still moving around great at 80 years old ? that?s my No. 1 goal,? Yankees Manager Joe Girardi, 46, said in Cincinnati on Monday. ?God bless him.?
Never mind the headaches, travel schedule and media obligations that come with every coaching job; McKeon is not taking over just any team?he?s taking over the Florida Marlins. The same team that was only two games behind NL East leader Philadelphia when the month began, but has since fallen to last place and began the week at 32-40.
McKeon will demand respect and a sense of team unity from a team that is struggling to find its identity. It would be great to see if he can turn this ship around, but no one is holding their breath.
