Alvirne's Taylor Carbone received all-state first team honors.

Taylor Carbone got more than just a Division I softball title this season. The Alvirne High School junior was one of 11 area players named all-state first team.

Carbone received Division I first-team honors, along with Jacklyn Dubois of Bishop Guertin, Rachel Bohannan of Merrimack, Mary Fontaine of Nashua South and Julie Curran of Nashua North. Whistle Blowing As Spiritual Warrior-Ship - Developing the Strength to Stand in the Light of Truth

It is not only in the military where we encounter "warriors." Any truly mature developed person who has remembered and integrated a spiritual dimension to their lives must by necessity also remember their warrior-ship skills, to navigate their way around some of the dysfunctional systems we encounter here at this time.

As a neophyte a few years ago, my concepts of love and light and all things beautiful and peaceful was soon dispelled with a few good kicks up the butt. For too long, before I started to discover who I was as an infinite soul incarnate on the planet, I wanted to be perceived by others as a 'nice person.' 'Nice' people are usually more concerned with pleasing others than standing in their true light of integrity.

Standing in one's true light of integrity can sometimes cause a commotion and upset those who wish to keep hidden agendas and secret plots.

I had just completed writing a book, and circumstances in my life necessitated me to move back into the world of established mainstream thinking and working. I embarked on a new career as a support worker to people with learning difficulties and this meant a move to London from the North of England.

Whilst I had written a book I had no idea of how I would get it published and so needed to earn a living. Clearly I still had much work to do on the "prosperity and abundance" philosophies I was hearing so much about in the New Consciousness, New Age and Spiritual Community circles, as I was living by the philosophy what I need would be provided without me compromising my integrity.

Within 4 months of working in my new post I discovered financial and emotional abuse affecting a vulnerable individual with Downs Syndrome. I see now that having written about the necessity to be strong enough to stand in the light of truth I was truly put to the test. I reported the situation to my employers and it was met with stonewalling, despite at a recent seminar we were asked by the M.D. to report any matters that were concerning us. Not only did they ignore my allegations and proof I provided them with, but there was a concerted effort by individuals within the organization to launch a full scale cover-up and intimidate me in the hope I would not pursue the matter.

Some co-workers admitted to knowing that these abuses were prevalent within the organization but had failed to take action and report the matter due to fears of their job security.

I was in the fortunate position of being responsible only for myself. Should my whistle blowing see me out of a job, as is very common amongst whistleblowers, no-one else would suffer except me.

It was clear to me that I had no choice but to take the matter to the very top in order to get an investigation implemented. Whilst I was hounded out of my job, I refused to leave until I knew that investigations and procedures were put in place to avoid further financial and emotional abuse. Whistle blowers rarely receive accolades. They have often lifted carpets to reveal the dirt below and in doing so provide clear evidence of cover-ups.

As dramatic and challenging as this period in my life was, it was also a time of complete clarity. I was left in no doubt that what I was doing was the right thing to do and actually I could not sleep easily in my bed at night had I turned a blind eye and not acted.

We do not need to have integrated a spiritual dimension in our lives to act as a whistleblower but for me the high energy level around me for the length of time I needed it, gave me the strength and courage I needed. It also demonstrated to me how many people, will knowingly, through their silence be complicit in wrongdoings.

We were born with an innate integrity and only when we are knowingly living outside of this truth will we encounter long term confusion and lack of energy.

How the major stock indexes fared Friday (AP)

Stocks fell Friday, giving the market another losing week, after poor earnings reports from two major technology companies suggested that businesses invested less in new technology as the economic recovery slowed.

Fears of a spreading European debt crisis also weighed on markets. Italian bank stocks plunged and trading in some of them was halted after Moody's warned that it might downgrade their credit ratings.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 115.42 points, or 1 percent, to 11,934.58.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 15.05, or 1.2 percent, to 1,268.45.

The Nasdaq composite fell 33.86, or 1.3 percent, to 2,652.89.

For the week:

The Dow is down 69.78, or 0.6 percent.

The S&P is down 3.05, or 0.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 36.41, or 1.4 percent.

For the year to date:

The Dow is up 357.07, or 3.1 percent.

The S&P is up 10.81, or 0.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 0.02 points, or less than 0.1 percent.

Jack McKeon is proving why 80 is the new 45.

And although there are some doubters who feel that a major league manager who is just 20 years shy of 100 can?t possibly keep with with rigors of a regular season schedule, McKeon believes otherwise.

?I look at it this way: Why should experience get penalized? Eighty doesn?t mean a thing. I?m not 80. My birth certificate says that, but I?m not 80.?

Nearly six years after McKeon retired as the Florida Marlins? manager, he returned to his former job on an interim basis and will lead the team for the rest of the season.

?I?ve managed since I was 14 years old,? he jokingly said. ?I?ll probably manage until I?m 95.?

Experimental Vaccine Seems to Cure Prostate Cancer in Mice (HealthDay)

SUNDAY, June 19 (HealthDay News) -- Preliminary research shows that an experimental vaccine may cure prostate cancer in mice.

Unlike previous cancer vaccine attempts, the new prostate cancer vaccine appears to be smart enough to outfox prostate cancer tumors, but experts caution that the research is still in its infancy and has yet to be tested in humans.

The hunt for effective cancer treatment vaccines has been going on for decades with varying degrees of success early on, but the new prostate cancer vaccine takes a markedly different approach.

Instead of aiming at a few cancer-causing proteins or antigens on the tumor, the new vaccine casts a much a wider net. The goal of a cancer vaccine is to trick the body's immune system into recognizing the tumor as an invader and attacking it. This is typically done using a virus as a host.

The researchers developed a library of genetic material (DNA) from healthy human prostate tissue cells and then inserted them into a virus. The end product was intravenously injected into the mice, which recognized the antigens and launched a potent immune response, according to a report on the findings, published online June 19 in Nature Medicine.

The study reported no side effects, and none of the mice developed autoimmune diseases, which had been reported in previous cancer vaccine trials.

"Many cancer vaccines display one, two or few antigens and, although this is successful in alerting the immune system to the cancer, the tumor eventually outsmarts the vaccine and adapts," explained the study's lead author, Richard Vile, an immunologist and professor at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Vile said he hopes that the new approach is smarter than the tumor. If the tumor adapts to the antigen, he explained, the vaccine launches a second wave of attacks.

The approach also makes the development easier, he said, as scientists don't have to identify specific antigens or targets. "We clone them all and let the immune system select which is most important," Vile said.

But, this may also prove to be a hurdle in getting U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to study the vaccine in humans. "The FDA requires that the active proteins be well characterized, and we don't know which the active proteins are," Vile said.

Even so, he said, "we hope to try to put this vaccine into patients within the next three to five years."

Dr. J. Leonard Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, said that news of the study "certainly holds out hope that this may represent a true advance."

He cautioned, though, that "we have been looking to vaccines for cancer for many decades and have not yet seen a vaccine or immune therapy make the leap from interesting concept to something effective in the clinic."

That said, the approach outlined in the new paper is "very different," Lichtenfeld said, adding that he remains cautiously optimistic about the vaccine.

"We have been excited in the past by some of these reports, and the success has not panned out," he said. "There is still a ways to go before we can get excited and say it will have benefit for patients with prostate cancer."

Willem W. Overwijk, a cancer vaccine researcher at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, agreed. "We have to wait and see if it will work in people," he said. "They are inducing a broad immune response at many targets on the tumor, which makes it harder for the tumor to escape. [If it does], they make a new vaccine targeting the recurring tumor."

But the bottom line remains: "We have to see if this works the same way in people with prostate cancer," Overwijk said. "Stay tuned."
