Apple has long been rumored to be working on a larger iPhone. A larger iPad may be in the cards, as well. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Apple is is testing larger screens for not only a bigger smartphone, but also a jumbo tablet. Sources at the company's suppliers say Apple is testing a tablet screen that measures "slightly less" than 13 inches diagonally. The current-generation iPad has a 9.7" display, so we could be looking at a substantial increase in display size.
No details are provided on the 13-incher's resolution, and information is scarce on the smartphone panel. The WSJ says only that the iPhone panel is larger than the 4" screen used on the current model. I'd expect to see something around the 5" mark?anything bigger than that starts to get a little unwieldy when you're carrying it around in your pocket.
Toting a 13" tablet will likely be more cumbersome than carrying a 10" one, too, but there are plenty of tablets that never stray far from the couch. As long as it's light enough to be held for extended periods, a larger iPad could have definite appeal. I certainly wouldn't mind having more screen area for browsing and flipping through pictures. Gamers would probably appreciate a larger screen, as well.
There's no word on when a super-sized iPad might be ready for mass consumption, nor are there any guarantees that Apple will even produce such a product. A larger iPhone seems all but assured, though.
