Just 38 percent of Americans rated Romney's speech last week as "excellent" or "good,"?according to the new Gallup poll released Monday. That pales in comparison with John McCain in 2008 (47 percent),?Barack Obama in 2008 (58 percent), and George W. Bush in both 2000 and 2004 (51 and 49 percent).?
Most people said Romney's speech was either "just okay" or didn't offer an opinion.
Then again, reaction to convention speeches doesn't directly correlate with election results. Democratic nomination John Kerry's speech was rated slightly better than Bush's in 2004, and he lost the election.?
Following the convention, 40 percent of those surveyed said they were more likely to support Romney, compared with 38 percent that said they were less likely. That two-point net positive is about the same rating that has come from the previous two Republican conventions.?
