Healthy Brunch Tips: Avoid Mistakes During The Celebratory Morning Meal

As many of us celebrate Easter with a festive brunch, we may find ourselves staring down a monster buffet table. What should you grab? When is it okay to indulge and what constitutes a major diet setback? We asked our favorite nutrition experts to outline their absolute brunching don'ts as we head into the holiday.

What's your strategy for eating healthfully at brunch? Tell us in the comments!

1. Brunching In The First Place

"Honestly, the biggest mistake is going to brunches at all," says Ruth Frechman, M.A., R.D., C.P.T. "It?s calorie suicide. Typically, brunches are expensive. Most people want to get their money's worth. They could easily consume 4,000 calories in one meal. The average person only needs 2,000 calories for the entire day."

2. Choosing Sweet Over Savory

This is the central question of brunch: Do you go sweet or savory? Pancakes or eggs? Now we have an answer: savory (but not too salty!).

"My number one brunch don't would be dishes that are practically made of pure carbs like pancakes or waffles. Because these are digested so quickly they're guaranteed to make your blood sugar spike and then plummet," says Karen Ansel, R.D. "While you might feel fine for a while you're inevitably going to get that carb coma feeling a couple of hours later. Adding sugary maple syrup to these only adds insult to injury. Instead pick something that's more balanced with a combination of protein, complex carbs (preferably from whole grains) and some healthy fat like huevos rancheros with avocado."

3. Confusing Brunch and Breakfast

"One of the biggest mistakes people make, they do before they even get to brunch. And that's not eating anything at all," says Rachel Begun, M.S., R.D., registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "You need calories to burn calories, meaning you need to eat food to get the metabolism going. If you wait until late morning or early afternoon to eat something, your metabolism is sluggish and not operating at maximum capacity. Plus, going to brunch starving is a recipe for overeating."

Joy Dubost, Ph.D R.D. C.S.S.D. agrees: "We may think because we are combining two meals we can [eat more]," she says. "But if you are not careful on choices and portion-size, brunch can quickly exceed calories consumed in two separate meals."

Instead, try to have a healthful snack in the morning before you head out the door -- something that combines fiber and protein, like low-fat cheese with an apple or yogurt with berries and slivered almonds.

4. Ordering From The Drink Menu

Alcoholic brunch drinks like bloody marys and "adult" coffee drinks are an easy way to go overboard on the calories without even realizing it. "Consuming multiple beverages, particularly those that are higher in calories, can end up being a high calorie meal on its own," explains Dubost. "I would recommend keeping it to one 12-ounce beverage. For lighter options you may want to choose mimosas or wine spritzers."

5. Beware Customizable Options

We're looking at you, omelet bar. The egg base might be just fine, but add enough meats and cheeses and you've got a calorie bomb on your hands.

"Many dishes can be higher in calories because we load them with numerous ingredients," says Dubost. "Try to keep it more basic or include various flavorful vegetables."

6. Thinking About Calories, Fat ... But Not Sodium

Between the bloody mary mix, hollandaise sauce and hash browns, brunch can amount to a salt lick. And while you might choose egg whites for your omelet and salad on the side, it won't do much to lower the sodium of your meal. That means you can easily surpass the government's daily recommendation of 2,300 mg within a matter of bites.

NASA 'Super Guppy' Swallows Supersonic NASA Jets (Photos)

Two supersonic NASA jets were swallowed whole by the space agency's outsized Super Guppy Transport plane in California this month so that they could be ferried to Texas.

The pair of retired T-38 jets, which are no longer airworthy, were loaded into the Guppy on March 18 at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center in Edwards, Calif.,and flown to El Paso. The jets' parts will be cannibalized and used for other T-38s that are still flying.

The loading process, which took over two hours, involved opening the Guppy's nose and hoisting the T-38s onto a specially designed pallet that was put into the Guppy's 25-foot (7.6-meter) diameter "stomach" of the NASA Super Guppy aircraft. Only the T-38s' wingtips needing to be removed so that the jets could fit inside the carrier, Johnson Space Center flight engineer David Elliott, the Guppy's project manager, said in a statement.

The Super Guppy is the last in its class of wide-bodied aircraft to have transported NASA's unwieldy cargo to their launch site, including rockets for the Apollo program and room-size modules for?the International Space Station. The plane is based at Ellington Airport in Houston, near NASA's Johnson Space Center. [See more photos of NASA's Super Guppy swallowing jets]

The first Guppy aircraft, called the Pregnant Guppy, was built from a heavily modified KC-97 Stratotanker in 1962 by the California-based company Aero Spacelines. Its 19-foot (5.8-meter) diameter cargo compartment was the largest such cavity of any aircraft at the time and it was designed to hold the second stage of a Saturn rocket for the?Apollo program.

The next generation, Dubbed the B377SG Super Guppy, was built in 1965 and was outfitted with a 25-foot (7.6-meter) diameter cargo bay, more powerful turboprop engines, a pressurized cockpit, and a hinged nose for easier loading of cargo, according to NASA.

The planes were operated by Aero Spacelines until NASA purchased the aircraft in 1981. The space agency still uses the Super Guppy Transport ? the last generation of Guppy that Aero Spacelines built. The plane is slated to bring the Orion Heat Shield from Textron Defense Systems near Boston to NASA's Kennedy Space Center at the end of March. The U.S. Department of Defense and government contractors also have used the Guppy to ferry aircraft and large components around the continent.

Spaying and neutering helps fight pet overpopulation - Ramona ...

By Cindy Jones

Spaying and neutering helps fight pet overpopulation. Every year, 17 million cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized or suffer as strays in the United States. These high numbers are the result of unplanned puppies and kittens that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering.

Top Reasons to Spay/Neuter Your Pet

?Fixed pets have less desire to roam, so they are less likely to be hit by a car, injured in fights, or get diseases. Surveys indicate that 85 percent of all dogs that are hit by cars are unfixed males. Fixing your pet could save you from a terrible broken heart.

?Fixed dogs and cats focus their attention on their human families. Fixed pets are easier to train. On the other hand, unfixed pets are focused on mating as their priority.

?Fixing your pet reduces/eliminates the spraying and marking with strong-smelling urine, and decreases the intensity of the smell.

?Fixing your pet drops the risk of your pet getting certain cancers, including uterine cancer (especially if done before first heat cycle) in females. In male pets, it eliminates testicular cancer and drops incidence of prostate disease.

?Fixed males are far less likely to develop dominance or aggression-related behavior problems, including possession and food guarding, territory marking (lifting his legs on everything in sight), aggression toward other dogs and ?humping? inappropriate objects. Neutering pets also decreases aggressive behavior, including biting. Many aggression problems can be avoided by early neutering.

?Fixing your pet helps cats and dogs live longer, healthier lives.

For low-cost or no-cost spay and neuter services, you can use spaysandiego.com, a website with list of places that help with the cost of spaying/neutering. Among them are:

Animal Welfare Foundation: Providing low-cost spay and neuter referrals, 619-702-4400, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday only.

County of San Diego Department of Animal Services: sddac.com, 760-966-3224. Cats receive up to $100 coupon toward spay/neuter services at most veterinarian clinics.

Escondido Humane Society: escondidohumanesociety.org, 760-888-2249. In April, Escondido Humane Society will begin a partnership with the Neuter Scooter from SNAP for low cost spay/neuter services onsite.

Feral Cat Coalition: feralcat.com, a free trap, spay/neuter and return program to humanely reduce the suffering of homeless cats. (Serving all of San Diego County) Homeless cats only.

San Diego Humane Society and SPCA: sdhumane.org, offers several needs-based, affordable spay and neuter services:

Spay/Neuter Clinics

Designed to provide affordable and accessible spay/neuter opportunities five days aweek based on financial need. The fees for spay/neuter range from $30 to $75, depending on the type/sex of the animal. In addition to this service, the following targeted spay/neuter services are offered:

?Pit Bull Clinic: Free, public spay/neuter for pit bull/pit bull mixed breeds (8 weeks or older) based upon financial need.

ECAR Clinic: Offered in partnership with East County Animal Rescue?s (ECAR) Trap Neuter Release (TNR) program for cats (8 weeks or older and 2 pounds in weight).

?Project KEPPT Clinic: Free, public spay/neuter service, based on financial need for animals 20 pounds or less.

Litter Abatement Program (LAP): Free public spay/neuter service for those who:

?Are relinquishing a litter of puppies or kittens (from their pet)

?Have found a stray litter of kittens and are able to capture the stray parent animal(s)

Spay/Neuter Initiative Program (SNIP): Provides affordable spay/neuter services for stray animals brought to the San Diego Humane Society and reclaimed by their owner.? For these animals, the reclaim fee is waived ($170) if the owner allows them to spay/neuter the animal for the cost of the surgery ($50).? Only offered at the Humane Society?s North Campus location in Oceanside.

Quarter of U.S. firms in China face data theft: business lobby

By Michael Martina

BEIJING (Reuters) - A quarter of firms that are members of a leading U.S. business lobby in China have been victims of data theft, a report by the group said on Friday, amid growing vitriol between Beijing and Washington over the threat of cyber attacks.

Twenty-six percent of members who responded to an annual survey said their proprietary data or trade secrets had been compromised or stolen from their China operations, the American Chamber of Commerce in China report said.

"This poses a substantial obstacle for business in China, especially when considered alongside the concerns over IPR (intellectual property rights) enforcement and de facto technology transfer requirements," the Chamber said.

A U.S. computer security company, Mandiant, said in February a secretive Chinese military unit was likely behind a series of hacking attacks that targeted the United States and stole data from more than 100 companies.

That set off a war of words between Washington and Beijing.

U.S. Representative Dutch Ruppersberger said last month American companies suffered estimated losses in 2012 of more than $300 billion due to trade secret theft, much of it the result of Chinese hacking.

China says the accusations lack proof and that it is also a victim of hacking attacks, more than half of which originate from the United States.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei called the survey a "completely irresponsible action".

"We hope the relevant side doesn't politicize financial and trade problems, does not exaggerate the so-called issue of online leaks and does more conducive things for China and the United States," Hong told reporters.

The Chamber's survey was conducted among 325 members across China late last year, before the release of Mandiant's report.

Only 10 percent of companies in the survey said they would use China-based cloud computing services, with most citing cyber security concerns as a reason. Blocked Internet searches in China had impeded business for 62 percent of respondents.

U.S. officials have pressed China to address Internet attacks and cyber spying against American companies. U.S. President Barack Obama raised hacking concerns in a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier in March.

A recent assessment by U.S. intelligence leaders said for the first time cyber attacks and cyber espionage had supplanted terrorism as the nation's top threat.

INVESTMENT STAGNATION

Most firms expressed optimism about the business outlook in China, with many reporting higher margins for their China units.

But companies gave lower expectations for investment and cited rising labour costs as a top concern. Perceptions that China's investment environment is stagnating are increasing, according to the survey.

"Members ... have not felt over the last four or five years that there have been commercially significant positive changes in the business environment or the investment environment," Chamber president Christian Murck told reporters.

"When you have an economy which is making a transition to a market economy, but which is not yet there, there is a feeling that if you are not moving forward with an indicated path of future policy that you are effectively moving backward," he said at a briefing on the survey.

The Chamber's survey also cited a steep rise in concerns over IPR enforcement, with 72 percent of respondents saying enforcement was ineffective or totally ineffective, an increase of 13 percentage points over last year.

Perceptions that technology transfer was increasingly a requirement for access to China's market also jumped 10 points to 37 percent, the Chamber said, with higher rates of concern reported in the aerospace, automotive, chemical in information technology sectors.

Vine switches on video embeds, keeps web viewers in the loop

Vine video posts have had an ephemeral quality when there's been few ways to show them off outside of catching a web link the moment it appears. There's a better way to make those six seconds last an eternity now that the Twitter-run service offers support for embedding its loops on the web. As long as you have access to an existing web link or share a clip through an updated iOS app, you can get HTML code to embed a video in two styles and three different sizes. While it's not quite the expanded platform support that some are hoping for, embedded viewing does make it easier to see what Vine is about -- and potentially delight (or annoy) blog readers who'd have otherwise missed your ultra-short movie projects.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 mini will reportedly go on sale shortly after GS 4

Samsung Galaxy S 4 mini will reportedly go on sale shortly after GS 4

Not too long after the Samsung Galaxy S 4 was announced, we started hearing whispers of a "miniature" version of the device -- which makes sense, given the Galaxy S III had a smaller sidekick of its own. Today, however, Bloomberg reported the unannounced device is indeed coming soon after the flagship makes its appearance at the end of April. If it follows a similar pattern to its bite-sized predecessor, it likely will be offered in Europe as a lower-cost alternative to the Galaxy S 4. The device is rumored to offer a dual-core 1.6GHz processor, a 4.3-inch display and 8MP camera. Sadly, no official details were given, but we've reached out to Samsung officials for comment and will update when we receive word.

Update: Samsung pinged back with the following comment, which doesn't do much towards confirming or denying whether or not the GS 4 mini is indeed on the horizon. A spokesperson informed us: "We have not announced the product mentioned in the Bloomberg story."

Some healthcare costs may rise when "Obamacare" implemented: official

By Jeff Mason and David Morgan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's top healthcare adviser acknowledged on Tuesday that costs could rise in the individual health insurance market, particularly for men and younger people, because of the landmark 2010 healthcare restructuring due to take effect next year.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said definitive data on costs will not be available until later this year when private health plans become authorized to sell federally subsidized coverage on new state-based online marketplaces, known as exchanges.

"Everything is speculation. I think there's likely to be some shifting in the markets," she told reporters at the White House.

The law, also known as "Obamacare," eliminates discriminatory market practices that have imposed higher rates on women and people with medical conditions.

It also limits how much insurers can charge older people. But while the changes are expected to lower costs for women, older beneficiaries and the sick, men and younger, healthier people will likely see higher rates as insurers try to hedge against continued risks.

"Women are going to see some lower costs, some men are going to see some higher costs. It's sort of a one to one shift ... some of the older customers may see a slight decline, and some of the younger ones are going to see a slight increase."

Insurance premiums could rise for some with individual plans, she said, as Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act enhances the level of coverage and either eliminates or reduces the rate of price discrimination against people who are older, female or have preexisting medical conditions.

"These folks will be moving into a really fully insured product for the first time, so there may be a higher cost associated with getting into that market," Sebelius said.

But those who qualify for federal subsidies through state healthcare exchanges would still get a better deal, she said.

Her remarks coincide with growing uneasiness about possible cost increases among lawmakers and executives in the $2.8 trillion U.S. healthcare industry.

A new study released on Tuesday by the nonpartisan Society of Actuaries estimates that insurance costs will rise 32 percent on average nationwide within three years, partly as a result of higher risk pools. Changes would vary by state, from an 80 percent hike in Wisconsin to a 14 percent reduction in New York.

Obama's healthcare restructuring, the signature domestic policy achievement of his first term, is expected to provide coverage to more than 30 million people beginning on January 1, 2014, both through the state exchanges and a planned expansion of the government-run Medicaid program for the poor.

Subsidies in the form of premium tax credits, available on a sliding scale according to income, are expected to mitigate higher costs for many new beneficiaries.

But the insurance industry, which is set to gain millions of new customers under the law, is warning of soaring premium costs next year because of new regulations that include the need to offer a broader scale of health benefits than some insurers do now.

That has raised concerns about people with individual policies not subject to subsidies and the potential for cost spillovers into the market for employer-sponsored plans, which according to U.S. Census data, cover about half of U.S. workers.

'LITTLE IMPACT'

Sebelius dismissed the idea of significant change for employer plans, saying that market segment was "likely to see very little impact."

Separately, a Democratic U.S. senator on Tuesday said the federal government has limited scope to help millions of people likely to remain without affordable health insurance under the new law.

Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, released a report submitted to the panel by the administration that outlines an "employee choice" policy that would allow some employers to offer a wider range of coverage choices to their workers at reduced rates for 2014.

But Wyden said the approach would not help many of the nearly 4 million worker dependents who may have to forego subsidized private health coverage as a result of an IRS ruling.

"Even in the states that allow for employee choice, it will be limited to a small number of workers," Wyden said.

The law would have most people with employer insurance remain under their current plans. Workers can opt for subsidized coverage if their employer plan is unaffordable, but only according to a narrow definition of what is affordable.

The IRS ruled in January that the cost of insuring a worker's family will be considered unaffordable if the employee's contribution to an individual coverage plan exceeded 9.5 percent of that person's income. That rule ignores the fact that family coverage is far more expensive than individual coverage.

As a result, the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that 3.9 million family dependents could be left unable either to afford employer-sponsored family coverage or to obtain federally subsidized insurance through an exchange.

In its report to the Senate committee, Sebelius' department said some employers could claim a tax credit in 2014 to make coverage more affordable and offer workers a range of coverage plans through state-based exchanges.

(This March 26 story has been corrected to drop reference to "premium" in second bullet and replace "individual premiums" with "insurance costs" in paragraph 11)

When does ad retargeting make sense for your business ...

porter-top-banner

Ad retargeting is used to follow users as they move from site to site.

Here?s how targeting advertising works ? but use it sparingly & strategically or it could turn off users

Target audience: Businesses, brands, digital marketers, advertising agencies, SEO specialists, entrepreneurs, educators, journalists, Web publishers.

JD LasicaLet me confess up front: I?ve long been attracted to the idea of useful advertising ? the promise that interruption marketing will fade into its well-deserved irrelevance and that marketers will be able to serve us ads and offers based on products and services we actually want or need.

Trouble is, the practice rarely lives up to the ideal, chiefly because retargeting, as it?s called, is hard to do well.

You know what I?m referring to, right? In your forays around the Web, you?ve no doubt noticed that you?re being served up advertising based on the pages you were visiting earlier. Take The Atlantic?s Alexis Madrigal, who discovered that 105 advertising-related companies tracked his online behavior over a 36-hour period. Lots of people are squeamish about the very idea of targeted ads, and for these folks, filling out this opt-out form should put the kabosh on most of these ads.

I fall into the second camp: I think retargeting has its place, especially for small businesses and entrepreneurs trying to break through the clutter of 2,000 marketing messages that bombard us every day. If you run a small business or startup and have a new product, service, book or online class that readers or followers might find valuable, retargeting has its place in your marketing arsenal, as long as it?s done with discretion and is accompanied by other tactics in getting the word out.

Below I?ll offer tips and best practices for your business if you?re considering targeted advertising.

How ad retargeting works ? is it right for you?

porter-gale-ad2

Here?s a look at how retargeting works and how it could be useful for your small business.

At its simplest, retargeting allows businesses to target ads to people who visited their site but didn?t purchase anything. Because the targeting is meant to be precise and the ad message can be customized, advertisers frequently see significant higher click-through-rates and purchases from retargeted ads.

Your business could:

  • Bring people back who abandoned the shopping cart process
  • Deliver a discount coupon or inform previous visitors of a sale
  • Simply remind viewers of your product at a later date when they might be ready to purchase

A number of vendors provide retargeting products: Google, AdRoll, Retargeter, Fetchback, Clicksor and Rocketfuel, to name just a few. Some have slightly different offerings, but they all basically work the same way.

?Targeted ads have driven about 15 percent of our enrollments with a lower CPA than other channels?

Retargeting starts with a bit of tracking code that your vendor provides and that you install on pages of your site. This tracking code drops a cookie into a visitor?s web browser and that cookie tracks what pages are viewed on your site. (If this sounds old school, it is: Browser cookies have been around for 19 years.)

Once your visitors travel to other sites on the Web, they?ll almost certainly encounter advertising slots on some of these pages. This is where you can retarget an ad to them and try to bring them back to your site. Those ad slots will do a quick check to see if there is a retargeting cookie present in the browser, and if there is, it will trigger a split-second real-time auction to determine what ad is served.

You?ll want to establish a budget at the outset and set a limit for your campaign. Generally these campaigns start at a few hundred dollars for a small business and can scale up from there. If your bid is the highest, you win the auction and your ad is served. The targeting companies keep track of ad inventory so you don?t have to figure out where your ad will appear. You generally pay on a cost-per-click basis, the same as you would for Google AdWords ads.

How one small business uses targeting to increase enrollments

Porter Gale, a friend who?s the author of the upcoming book?Your Network Is Your Net Worth?and the former vice president of marketing for Virgin America, wanted to get the word out about her new three-day online class?Building Your Brand (day two is today).

So she agreed to a modest retargeting campaign steered by Rick Silvestrini, general manager of?creativeLIVE, which hosts live online workshops, including Porter?s.?Silvestrini?runs targeted advertising campaigns to drive sign-ups for several of his instructors? classes. ?Targeted ads have driven about 15 percent of our enrollments from paid with a lower CPA (cost per acquisition) than other channels,? he said.

As with Google AdWords ads, the cost per click can vary greatly depending on your bid parameters ? after all, it?s auction pricing. With Google, there?s no minimum spend, and you can wind up spending little or a lot depending on how the ad performs. ?Our clicks cost anywhere from 32 cents to $ 1.50 per click, depending on how well the creative performs,? Silvestrini said. ?I?ll spend $300 to $2,000 per week on retargeting alone. That comes out to $50 to $800 per week per course.? The higher the spend, the more people who sign up for the courses.

Facebook wading into relevant advertising in a big way

What about Facebook? With a billion users and about a quarter of the all display ads on the Internet, Facebook offers businesses a huge opportunity for retargeting, and the mechanics are basically the same. However, the advertising units inside Facebook are different sizes (those little text & picture ads on the right of your news feed) and there are not as many vendors to choose from; Perfect Audience and AdRoll seem to be the biggest.

Facebook also has another twist on retargeting called Custom Audiences, where you upload your email list and Facebook targets ads to Facebook members who are on your list.

Other social networks, like LinkedIn and Twitter, have their own techniques for ad targeting.

Tips for small businesses that want to try out targeted ads

Can small businesses do this on their own? That depends on how technically savvy you are and how much time you want to devote to mastering retargeting. The easiest retargeting to do on your own is Facebook Custom Audiences targeted to your email list. (I might have recommended Twitter for its ease of use, but the conversion rate was very low for a campaign I recently did for one of my sites.) For the rest, you?ll at least need to know how to install a bit of tracking code into your pages.

Regardless of who?ll be executing your targeted ad campaign, keep these best practices in mind:

  • Have a planned-out strategy, don?t just send out a targeted ad blast. Who are you targeting precisely and what do you want them to do?
  • Don?t do a mass carpet bombing. Start out with a short campaign and grow it from there.
  • Make sure the service you use has an ad report tool. Try several variations of your ad and optimize your campaign to use the version that received the biggest response.
  • Make sure your product or service offers value and is something that people will want.
  • Make it personal and relevant ? not like a late-night infomercial.
  • Where possible, target friends of connections, which you can do in Facebook.
  • Make sure your ad contains a clear call to action.

If this still sounds bit daunting, please reach out to us and we?ll help get you on your way.

Ad targeting, while years old, still has a long way to go. Clearly, some of these companies go too far in collecting users? personal data without their consent (but that?s a column for another day). For another, there was no option to turn off the ads even though I registered for Porter?s workshop. I?m with The Register writer who bemoaned, ?Come on, people: if you?re going to track my online behavior, at least use it to get me to buy something I want!?

What do you think of retargeting? Have you used it? Do you think it has its place?

No NASCAR penalties issued after California race

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? NASCAR Chairman Brian France said Tuesday the contact between Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin as they battled for the win at California over the weekend was just the kind of throwback racing he expects out of his drivers and the new Gen-6 car.

"I have said repeatedly, every minute, that contact, especially late in the race when you are going for a win, that's not only going to happen ? that's expected," France said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Both of them did exactly what I think you would do when you really, really want to win. Getting some contact, trying to race extra hard to win the race, that's what we're about."

Hamlin suffered a compressed fracture of the L1 vertebra in his lower back, and Joe Gibbs Racing said Tuesday night he'll be out a minimum of six weeks.

France, who spoke to AP hours before JGR announced Hamlin would not require surgery but needed time to heal, did not think anything was done intentionally by Logano to harm Hamlin.

"Injuries can happen throughout any race on any lap, and fortunately they are seldom," France said. "That's just part of racing."

NASCAR announced Tuesday no penalties were warranted after California ? not against Tony Stewart for scuffling with Logano after the race, and series officials saw nothing to indicate Logano or Hamlin were trying to intentionally wreck each other as they raced for the win. In addition, NASCAR officials have given no thought to policing blocking, which is what Logano did to Stewart on the final restart to trigger the post-race confrontation.

"There are no conversations internally inside of NASCAR to look at blocking as a violation or a penalty as some other forms of motorsports do," Sprint Cup Series director John Darby said. "As good as the racing has been, as exciting as it's been, I don't know that we need to jump in the middle and screw it up."

Stewart parked his car near Logano's and angrily approached him after Sunday's race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. There was some shoving, but crew members intervened before any punches landed. Logano threw a water bottle at Stewart.

Darby said the incident didn't escalate to a level where NASCAR had to take action.

"A few years ago we backed away from micromanaging drivers' emotions, you would hope in today's world that if somebody didn't win a race, they would be upset about it," Darby said. "I don't know that we've actually got a rule book that describes every push in the chest or kick in the shin. If two guys get into a hell of a fight, we're going to have to react. But a couple of guys blowing off some steam and slapping at the air is not going to get anybody in a whole lot of trouble."

France noted that drivers are encouraged to show their emotion and settle disputes ? which is all Stewart was doing on Sunday.

"We have no problem, and frankly encourage drivers to go up to one another to discuss whatever they think they need to that happened in the race," France said. "And then every once in a while there will be some emotions, and that's what happened Sunday and crews stepped in between them and we don't think it rose to some level of anything."

France said NASCAR will intervene when feuds go too far and when emotions run too high.

"We're not going to allow a boxing match to take place every time they have a disagreement," France said. "But on the other hand, we're not going to prevent the emotional exchanges that occur after a race. Everyone has the right to walk up to someone and say, 'What the? What happened there? What did you do that for?' And they explain themselves and usually work it out."

It remains to be seen where the Logano and Hamlin feud goes from here, although Sunday was viewed as a racing incident.

The two former teammates have feuded since the closing laps of the season-opening Daytona 500 and it escalated after contact from Hamlin sent Logano spinning into the wall two races ago at Bristol. Logano angrily confronted Hamlin after the race before being pulled away by crew members.

The two moved their feud to Twitter for at least the second time this season and then came Sunday's race.

They were racing side-by-side on the last lap for the win when they banged into each other. Both cars spun and Hamlin's hit head-on into an inside wall not protected with energy-absorbing SAFER barriers.

He spent Sunday night in a Southern California hospital, where he was diagnosed with an L1 compression fracture in his lower back. He saw Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates on Tuesday, and Petty determined the driver will not need surgery but needed a minimum of six weeks to heal.

NASCAR is off this weekend, so Hamlin could miss only five races if the healing process meets Petty's estimate. But the next five weeks include stops at Martinsville Speedway and Richmond International Raceway, where the Virginia-raised driver has a combined six Sprint Cup victories.

Hamlin also races in his annual charity event at RIR, and will now have to sit that out, too.

Darby did not think Logano intentionally wrecked Hamlin.

"It was the last lap of the race, and the last time they were both going to see turns three and four. They were side-by-side. If somebody was of the mindset to retaliate, they probably would have been lined up nose-to-tail and somebody would have drove into the other car and spun him around," Darby said. "In this case, that is so far from the opposite, that it never even crossed anybody's mind that I'm aware of that paid attention to the race."

Meanwhile, NASCAR is still going over data from Hamlin's accident and will need to meet with officials from the University of Nebraska, home to the engineering school's Midwest Roadside Safety experts, and IndyCar before making any recommendations on whether a SAFER barrier should be installed where Hamlin hit.

When NASCAR first began installing SAFER barriers following the 2001 death of Dale Earnhardt, the priority were locations where cars frequently hit the wall. Officials at Nebraska also make recommendations not to install the barriers at certain points at a facility because of various issues, including the potential for a car to sling-shot back into traffic after impact.

Track officials usually follow the recommendations.

Tom Gideon, senior director of safety research and development at NASCAR, said where Hamlin hit was not an area that cars frequently make impact.

"Each point on the track we look at the application and you don't want to put (barriers) in places where the angle of impact may not be appropriate for a SAFER barrier," Gideon said. "We also look at the possibility of impact and the frequency of impact, and when you look at the frequency of impact, especially at oval tracks, it's reasonable to think they are going to be with outside walls."

NASCAR doesn't race at Auto Club Speedway again this season, but IndyCar's October finale is scheduled at the track. IndyCar officials said the series is working with NASCAR, Nebraska and the Fontana track officials to study the accident and see if "any changes need be addressed prior to our race at Fontana."

Mailbird Is Like Sparrow for Windows (and We?ve Got Invites)

Mailbird Is Like Sparrow for Windows (and We’ve Got Invites) Windows: There are a lot of great desktop email clients available for Windows, but Mailbird promises to bring some elegance, simplicity, and useful new features to your desktop. We've been testing it for a few months now, here's what we think (and how you can try it out too).

At first blush, you wouldn't be wrong for thinking that Mailbird looks an awful lot like Sparrow, our favorite mail client for the Mac. Many of the same features are available in the same places: messages display on the right in a collapsable conversation view. Tags, labels, reply/reply all, and info buttons are all in the same places. Even the layout is similar. That's no mistake: Mailbird was clearly inspired by Sparrow's simple, functional design, and that's not a ding: why fix what's not broken? So Mailbird is like Sparrow for Windows...if Sparrow was kind of sucky. Here are the pros and cons.

What It Does Well

Mailbird Is Like Sparrow for Windows (and We’ve Got Invites) Mailbird does offer some great features on its own. It syncs perfectly with Gmail and can access all of your labels and folders. You don't get advanced features like canned responses and filters, but basic Gmail functionality is there, and we recommend having a desktop email client on hand for a number of reasons, even if it isn't your main source for email. Also, Mailbird is fast. Composing and sending messages is a snap, search is quick and accurate, and the app supports Gmail keyboard shortcuts, so if you're familiar with the web interface, you don't need to learn a bunch of new tricks.

Mailbird also has add-on "apps" to extend its functionality. Some of the ones pre-installed (but not enabled, you'll have to do that manually) include Dropbox for attachments, contacts, calendar, Facebook?which goes beyond just downloading profile images and contact information but also lets you post status updates and keep up with your friends, and even a Lifehacker app that brings you right to our site. The developers plan even more apps to extend the app's functionality as it marches towards public beta and eventual launch.

Mailbird Is Like Sparrow for Windows (and We’ve Got Invites)

Where It Falls Short

It's not all roses with Mailbird though. For starters, the app in its current state only supports one Gmail account. No POP, no IMAP, not even more than one Gmail account if you have multiple. The developers say multi-account support is on the way, but it's hard to even discuss an email client without it. Instead, they're working on "multi-identity," or account aliasing, but that's not the same, and it's not nearly as useful.

The other major downside is Mailbird's pricing. While in beta, the app is free, and if you sign up using our invite link, you'll get six months of Mailbird Pro for free, even after the beta ends. After that, there'll be two versions, Free and Pro:

  • The free version will be ad-supported and attach a "Sent Using Mailbird" link at the bottom of your messages.
  • The Pro version will remove the ads and the signature link, and let you add as many accounts as you like (when that feature exists. This implies free accounts will either not be able to add multiple accounts, or only be able to add a few-the folks I spoke with didn't say.)

The Pro version will also cost you an annual subscription of $12 USD/year (you can pre-order now for $9/yr). You'll have to decide whether that's worth your money, especially compared to apps like Postbox (one-time fee), previously mentioned Inky (completely free), or our favorite, Thunderbird (completely free) with more forgiving price tags and more features, even if they're not as pretty, lightweight, or fast.

How to Get It

The team behind Mailbird plan to launch their public beta on April 2nd, but if you want to give it a try now, they've offered us 3000 beta invites for Lifehacker readers. You'll need to use the referral link below to grab it, but they're only offering Mailbird to the first 3000 people who click it. After that you'll be in line to join the public beta on the 2nd.

Why sticking around is sometimes the better choice for males

Mar. 26, 2013 ? Researchers from Lund University and the University of Oxford have been able to provide one answer as to why males in many species still provide paternal care, even when their offspring may not belong to them. The study finds that, when the conditions are right, sticking around despite being 'cuckolded' actually turns out to be the most successful evolutionary strategy.

The study, by Charlie Cornwallis and colleagues, is published 26 March in the open access journal PLOS Biology.

In many species, males put a lot of effort into caring for offspring that are not their own. At first glance this makes little sense, because natural selection should dictate that males only care for the offspring that carry their genes. However, this study suggests that the males are both more tolerant and more astute than previously assumed, and in fact adjust their care according to how likely it is that females are unfaithful, whilst also judging whether caring will potentially reduce the number of offspring they can have in the future.

The researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 62 studies across 48 different species including insects, fish, birds and mammals. Overall, the researchers found that promiscuous copulations by females reduced the investment of males by 12%. Although parental care is highly variable across these species, the researchers were able to find a general explanation for why sticking around to care for the offspring is the better choice for some males that have been usurped. The reason is that males tend to be more accepting of offspring fathered by other males in species where the risk of cuckoldry is generally low, or when caring does not harm their future reproductive success.

"This, to me, shows the strength of natural selection, with its footprints clear in species from burying beetles -- which care for young over a few weeks by regurgitating dead mice -- to humans, who spend years providing for their children," says Charlie Cornwallis, researcher at the Department of Biology, Lund University. "These are complex calculations that males are making," he adds, "and it has been difficult to measure the relevant factors correctly, but looking across species has helped us work out what is going on. Moreover, a comparative study like this can guide researchers to the types of species and experimental cues that are likely to provide the most insight into paternal care in the future."

The study therefore opens up the possibility of more targeted research in the area. Now that the researchers know what factors are important, they can design studies to further test their findings and predict what males will do in species that have not yet been studied. For example, in species where the cost of caring is very low, males would not be expected to adjust their level of parental care even if the females are promiscuous. Rather than these males being 'duped', such tolerance has actually been favoured by natural selection.

Scientists also identify simple vaccine delivery model in 'breakthrough' discovery; Novel vaccine could arrive in veterinary market in as few as 5 years

Scientists are getting closer to a Chagas disease vaccine, something many believed impossible only 10 years ago. Research from the Sealy Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has resulted in a safe vaccine candidate that is simple to produce and shows a greater than 90 percent protection rate against chronic infection in mice.

In a paper published online in PLOS ONE, the researchers describe how they identified and tested potential Trypanosoma cruzi (also known as T. cruzi or Chagas disease) antigen candidates and delivery models to establish the safety and efficacy of a vaccine formulation known asTcVac3. This potential vaccine could halt the irreversible heart and organ damage that afflicts approximately 30 percent of those infected with Chagas.

"This signals a scientific breakthrough unprecedented vaccine efficacy for a common parasitic disease with no cure for chronic sufferers," said lead author Nisha Garg, PhD, professor of microbiology, immunology and pathology at UTMB. "If this vaccine proves practical, it could be approved in as few as five years for use in canines, which are reservoir hosts of the disease. As many as 20 percent of dogs may be infected in Texas alone, developing the same heart conditions as humans but mistaken by vets for heartworm."

The study also provides further evidence that a human Chagas vaccine is possible, a topic of debate among some who still believe that Chagas heart disease is the result of an autoimmune disorder, she added.

T. cruzi, transmitted by the triatomine insect, or "kissing bug," is prevalent in almost all Latin American countries and is becoming more common in the U.S. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 10 million people mostly children are infected worldwide. Approximately 13,000 die each year from the complications of Chagas-induced heart disease a result of the chronic infection Garg and her team aim to vaccinate against. It is estimated that the global economic burden of Chagas is about $7 billion a year.

TcVac3: The Path of Discovery

TcVac3 is the result of rigorous computational/bioinformatics analysis and screening of the T. cruzi genome for potential candidate antigens over several years by Garg and her team. These analyses led the researchers to three potential antigens (TcG1, TcG2 and TcG4) for further investigation.

Next, they began testing these antigens and potential vaccine delivery models how the components are arranged in the actual vaccine to determine the best approaches.

Early experiments proved that delivery of the candidate antigens by a DNA-prime/protein boost approach, along with co-delivery of IL-12 and GM-CSF cytokine adjuvants meant to enhance the immune response, was effective in generating antibody and T cell responses capable of providing more than 90 percent control of acute infection and parasite burden in infected mice.

Recognizing, however, that this vaccine delivery model was quite complex, the scientists sought to simplify the vaccine using a DNA-prime/Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA)-boost approach a delivery model that offers many advantages: it can accommodate multiple foreign genes in its genome; may be administered by a variety of routes; has an excellent safety record; and has been shown to generate immune responses to a variety of foreign antigens. MVA itself can act as an adjuvant since it provides a signal to the innate immune system and can boost T cells.

Based on preliminarystudies by the researchers that showed this delivery model to be potent, the scientists next tested the protective efficacy of TcVac3, constituted of just the TcG2 and TcG4 candidates and lacking the adjuvants, delivered by the DNA/MVA approach.

With two doses of the vaccine, the mice with TcVac3-induced antibodies exhibited 92 to 96 percent protection against chronic infection. They found that the DNA/MVA approach increased the vaccine efficacy enough to omit one of the antigens and the adjuvants, making it a much simpler but still highly effective vaccine.

"Because Chagas is most prevalent in developing countries, it is essential that a potential vaccine be inexpensive to develop and easy to deliver," said Garg. "TcVac3 accomplishes this goal, making it not just an effective candidate, but an ideal one."

Future research will determine if the vaccine composition can be simplified even further. In addition, the scientists are already conducting related trials in canines. Garg and her team are also working on pre-clinical trials of human patient samples, testing for immune response in patients that are already infected but not showing signs of chronic disease. Results of both studies are anticipated later this year.

Phew! Joe Jonas Denies Sex Tape Rumor

Joe Jonas was put in an awkward position this weekend, when he was forced to deny a rumor that he and girlfriend Blanda Eggenschwiler had made a kinky sex tape. According to a dubious report from the website Blind Gossip, Jonas, 23, and Eggenschwiler, 28, shot the video in a Buenos Aires hotel room during the Jonas Brothers world tour. The website went on to claim that Eggenschwiler, a former model whom Joe has been dating since November, had signed a deal to release the tape behind her famous boyfriend's back. It appears, however, that this tape will never see the light of day -- because it doesn't exist.

Choose One Path And Stick To It. - Blogging Tips

You want to build an online business and you are reading every eBook and blog going, you spend your spare time watching videos showing you how to build email lists and different ways to make money online. You buy all the latest Clickbank products that come flooding into your inbox promising abundant wealth from every social media network online.

You buy PLR products hoping to sell them as your own eBooks or you upload them to file sharing sites filled with affiliate links looking to make loads of affiliate commissions. You fill a blog website with loads of duplicate PLR content intending to make thousands in advertising revenue.

In a nut shell you try anything and everything in your desperation to make money online so you can leave the day job Frustrations Working for Youand yet you are no better off than when you started. What really is happening is that you are spreading yourself so thinly that you are not building a business you are just wasting your time and creating a lot of work and desperation for yourself.

What you need to do is focus on one thing at a time and work a plan around it then focus fully on it until you get results either good or bad. Obviously I don?t mean you should carry on for 5 years if the first 6 months has shown no positive results whatsoever.

People generally try something then they learn something new and move onto that for example, let?s say you have a blog and you want to get free traffic to it so you can generate revenue from affiliate commissions or advertising revenue. You read that writing great articles and offering them to blogs and websites was a great way to get traffic, you write a few, they get accepted but they are not published at the same time, over a couple of weeks your site hasn?t had much increase in traffic.

You realise that there is a bit of work involved in writing posts and while waiting for your article to get published you hear that people are making good money and driving traffic to their sites by creating short videos and putting them on YouTube so you leave off the writing and attempt to create your own videos.

Videos often need slides and they take time to create. if your videos are going to be educational then a short video can have a lot of slides, they can be harder to make than writing an article. After you have managed to knock together one or two dodgy videos and got them uploaded to YouTube you check your traffic stats on your site and your Clickbank account and see that not a lot has changed.

Meanwhile you have found a new blog to read and the owner has a podcast series and talks about how his traffic and reputation has grown thanks to his podcasts. His reputation means he is trusted and that trust means people buy from his site through his affiliate links.

Soooooooo what do you do? You get a cheap headset and download Audacity then start recording your own podcast series, you go through the process of getting it all set up on iTunes and unleash your podcast upon the world. But guess what? No one knows you, they have never heard of you so why would they listen to your podcast over those they do know?

plr ebook profit reallyAnd so your traffic stats on your site do not change, again you have tried something but it hasn?t worked. Now you have heard of this young lad who makes a fortune selling eBooks on Amazon Kindle, so off you trot and start compiling eBooks from PLR articles and even attempt to write your own.

You get your first couple of eBooks on Kindle and then wait for the traffic and money to come in but again nothing happens, while you wait for the sales to come in, you go back and write a couple articles to share on other people?s sites, you knock out another video and after a month or two attempt to record another podcast.

You might think that you are busy creating a lot of content and building a business but in many ways you are simply ?pissing in the wind?. You are just bumbling from one thing to another hoping for it all too eventually bring in results. You are fooling yourself; chances are none of it will amount to anything.

You need to decide what you are going to do and decide NOT to expect traffic or wealth to miraculously start flooding to you within a few weeks. Give it at least a few months and work really hard at it. Do not allow to be distracted by other new ?shiny? methods until you have fully tested out the method you are working on now.

If you write 2 articles a day and do that for 6 days a week for 3 months then you have 144 articles posted across the web instead of just a handful. If you made 3 videos a week for 3 months then you will have 36 videos all driving traffic back to your site. There are membership sites that do not have that amount of videos available.

I am not saying that you cannot make videos and do articles during the same time period if you can manage it but I am saying that you do not want to start one thing do a couple then move onto something else. Make a plan and focus on it, results come from the efforts you put in.

Will 5 articles have the same effect as 144 dotting across numerous different sites? No they won?t. Will 3 videos get the same results as 36 videos? Unless you have created a YouTube classic that goes viral then again the answer will be no.

The methods are often sound, they do work but many guru?s have made you believe that they should work in a matter of days with exciting statements like ?Young Spotty Teenager Makes $1599,45 In 1 Hour Using Only One 25 Second Long Video On YouTube And Also Beds Katy Perry Because Of It!?

In reality these things take a fair bit of work and time to get results and that requires focus, discipline and intention.? So now it is up to you, chose a method you think you can do or like, look at what is involved in its execution and create a plan of attack. Schedule time to do the work and set deadlines to get things done and focus on it fully. If you want success, then you really owe it to yourself.

What do you think?
