BUILDING a casino in Folkestone would drag the town into the gutter ? or rescue it from lengthening dole queues.
These are among the mixed opinions that have flooded into the Herald following our exclusive story last week about plans to open a casino.
Readers have responded in their droves to our article about the proposal, which could feature 150 gaming machines and employ more than 100 people.
Jon Davenport, of Darnley Close, said: "Given that the town is currently dying a slow but sure death, I would have thought any investment on this scale would be welcomed with open arms."
He added: "Let us not forget, Las Vegas had humble beginnings and is now an international tourist destination.
"I'm not saying this is going to be the case for Folkestone, but from small acorns and all that."
Reader Keith Griffiths said a casino could provide "a good afternoon/evening entertainment", Chris Bratcher from Hythe said it may encourage new restaurants and other businesses to open and Luke Harman poured scorn on the idea it could increase gambling problems in the area.
But Janet Young said: "Do we have to go so low to permit a casino in Folkestone? It's a no, no, no, don't let it happen please."
Rochelle Saunders, a trustee of Shepway Citizens Advice Bureau, said: "This could really increase footfall into us of people with debt issues, and people are struggling enough as it is."
A casino operator has expressed interest in opening a venue in the town and councillors were due to vote last night on Wednesday on whether to approach the government to get the necessary licences.
