Letterman, Fallon perform to empty studios

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

If David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon crack wise and no one's around to laugh, are they still funny??It turns out ... yes, very!

With a massive storm approaching and New Yorkers being either evacuated or encouraged to stay in their homes, the "Late Show" and "Late Night" taped Monday ?afternoon without audiences. (Maybe Letterman and Fallon should have tweeted their monologues, however -- thousands of East Coasters had lost power by the time the shows aired and local newscasts were providing constant storm coverage.)?

Lindsay Lohan dubs storm "Hurricane Sassy"

"We're in the middle of Hurricane Sandy and we have no studio audience," Letterman kicked off his monologue, before the storm had been reclassified, "but we do have quite a show for you tonight. Thank you for joining us in the Ed Sullivan Shelter."

He informed the, er, Paul Schaffer that Sandy was being tagged "one of the worst storms in U.S. history," and that experts were expecting 90 mile-per-hour winds and 12 inches of rain. Landfall was expected in Delaware and New Jersey at high tide, aided by the full moon.?

"If I were home, I'd be boarding up your television sets, because this is the stuff that's gonna hurt somebody," Letterman deadpanned. (Among the Top 10 Rejected Names for the Storm: Al Frankenstorm, Trumpical Storm, Wetzilla, iPaddle and Oprah Windy.)

Storm poised to pound stars' homes in the Hamptons

Soon after, unstoppable guest Denzel Washington showed up clad in a yellow rain slicker, as if he'd trudged through the streets of New York to be there.

"Only for you, Dave," the "Flight" star said. "I swam."

Asked if he had ever been in a hurricane before, Washington cracked, "Once, with Noah."

These celeb-owned homes in the Hamptons could be taking a beating

Fallon, meanwhile, ventured outside 30 Rock himself to do a cold (probably, quite literally) open.

"I'm hoping, if you're watching, you are at home, you're safe, you're warm.... But we're here," he added. Guest/storm troopers Seth Meyers, Padma Lakshmi, Robert Zemeckis and the band Imagine Dragons all made it, too. (Yes, it sounds like Fallon managed to get more guests than usual in the midst of a hurricane-powerful tropical storm.)

Slamming home the magnitude of the possible natural disaster looming outside, the camera panned to the nonexistent crowd (well, except for Mets bucket-hat guy) watching Fallon's monologue.

Frankenstorm's sideshow: Horse-headed guys, Mitt musings and Sandy sex

"Theater owners had to cancel all Broadway shows today," he said. "Many performers were having trouble making it into the city. You could tell by that one show, 'Blue Man Guy.'"

But Fallon and Letterman persevered. In?repeats tonight, however, are the similarly New York-set "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report," as well as "Jimmy Kimmel Live" -- which tapes in L.A. but just happens to be in New York this week for a special run.

Observatory: ?Lucy? Species Could Climb Trees, Researchers Say

Last year the discovery of a foot bone revealed that, more than three million years ago, the hominid species whose most famous member is known as Lucy probably walked upright.

Zeray Alemseged/Dikika Research Project

The research is based on the analysis of the shoulder bones of "Selam", an Australopithecus afarensis 3-year-old.

Now a new study reveals that the species, Australopithecus afarensis, was also quite apelike, and very capable of climbing trees. The research is based on the analysis of the shoulder bones of Selam, a 3-year-old of the same species.

?The position or orientation of the shoulder joint was very gorillalike,? said Zeresenay Alemseged, a paleoanthropologist at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and one of the study?s authors.

?We compared it to the primate database,? Dr. Alemseged said. ?This is the earliest, most complete scapula ever analyzed.?

He and his colleague David J. Green, an anatomist at Midwestern University, report their findings in the current issue of the journal Science.

Dr. Alemseged speculates that Lucy, Selam and their kin climbed trees to hide from predators and search for food, and perhaps even to nest.

Exactly how much time they spent in trees is hard to say. Other research has revealed that many traits of the species? hip bone, lower limb and foot are humanlike and well suited for upright walking.

Dr. Alemseged was part of the team that discovered Selam in 2000, in Ethiopia. It took about 10 years to analyze the paper-thin scapula, which was embedded in sandstone, Dr. Alemseged said.

Lucy, a partial skeleton of the species, was discovered in 1974.

Obese moms give birth to heart healthier kids following bariatric ...

Kids born to moms who have lost a substantial amount of weight after undergoing bariatric surgery have fewer cardiovascular risk factors than their siblings who were born before the weight loss surgery.

This is because the metabolic changes and weight loss that occur after the surgery have a positive effect on inflammatory disease-related genes in the offspring, according to a new study presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, co-hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.

"Our research found that maternal obesity affects the genes of the offspring," says Dr. Fr?d?ric Gu?nard, a post-doctoral fellow under the supervision of Dr. Marie-Claude Vohl of the Functional Food Institute at Laval University and a recipient of a Heart and Stroke Foundation Research Fellowship.

"The good news is that we can do something to change this outcome: Reducing obesity in the mother has a positive health impact on the health of future offspring."

The study comes from the cutting-edge field of epigenetics, which looks at how our genes can be switched on and off by environmental changes. What's novel here is that the scientists looked at how these changes can impact the DNA of our offspring (without necessarily altering the DNA sequence).

Think of identical twins with the same DNA ? how can two individuals with the same DNA have different states of health? It was once thought that only DNA structure changes caused genetic variation. But we now know that genes can be turned on or off ("expressed"). A variety of processes is thought to "flick the switch."

One such process is that small molecules bind to DNA. These molecules are produced by one's own body and their binding to DNA is modulated by the environment (for example, from foods or from toxins in the environment).

Scientists now know that molecules called methyl groups can turn genes on and off ? a process called DNA methylation that can change the gene expression, but doesn't change the gene sequence. Generally speaking, more methylation means a gene is turned off and less means a gene is turned on.

Parental obesity contributes substantially to pediatric obesity through genetic, environmental and epigenetic influences. Obesity during pregnancy predisposes the offspring to lifelong excess body weight and increased risk of heart disease.

Bariatric surgeons and researchers at Laval University observed that children born after their mothers had a type of bariatric surgery called bilio-pancreatic bypass surgery were less likely to be obese, had improved insulin resistance, lower blood pressure and an improved cardiovascular disease risk profile.

This observation prompted Dr. Gu?nard and his team to study the underlying reasons for this improvement in heart disease risk.

They took blood samples from 25 children of 20 mothers who were born before their mothers had bilio-pancreatic bypass surgery and blood samples from 25 of their siblings who were born afterwards.

The children ranged in age from two to 24 years. The average body mass index (BMI) of the mothers was 45 before bariatric surgery and 27 after. Bariatric surgery is indicated for individuals with a BMI of 40 or greater, or those with a BMI of 35 or greater who have co-morbid conditions (for example, diabetes) and are of low surgical risk.

They then tested the DNA from blood samples, using a special tool ? the Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip ? to find any changes in the genes caused by methylation.

They found that methylation levels were very different in the children born to mothers before bypass surgery from those who were born after.

Specifically, they found that more than 5,500 known genes with differential methylation in the children born before their mothers had bypass surgery compared to children born afterwards.

"Our findings show that maternal bariatric surgery results in significant metabolic effects to the methylation profiles of inflammatory disease-related genes," says Dr. Gu?nard. "The bariatric surgery and weight loss experienced by the mothers created an in utero environment that favorably changed the gene methylation levels of the fetus."

"Basically, this study tells us that maternal obesity affects the obesity and cardiovascular risk profile of offspring and that weight loss can improve the cardiovascular health of children."

"We know our genetic makeup influences our children's risks ? but so can our environment," says Heart and Stroke Foundation spokesperson Dr. Beth Abramson. "For example, if a disease runs in a family, we know to watch out for it in the children as they age. This study shows that external factors also influence our risk for heart disease ? and that of our offspring by switching genes on or off in our DNA; providing a glimpse as to why this occurs. This is why lifestyle behaviours are so important."

Dr. Abramson says this study is another reminder about why we need to manage and control our weight at all stages of life. "What other things could we be doing to flip those switches and provide a better blueprint for our kids to start them off right in life?"

Dr. Gu?nard says we would need other genetics studies to find out if weight loss changes the methylation profile of the genes of offspring of women who have lost weight through other measures.

Caring For Baby Boomers and Seniors In Their Own Homes

With proper health care, you as a baby boomer or senior could live to be 100 years if age, or older. You can also be instrumental in helping other baby boomers or seniors live to be a ripe old age, in their own homes.

Senior care is becoming a major concern in North America, particularly because there are thousands of baby boomers and seniors in our era. By baby boomers, I am referring to those who were born after World War 11 and those over sixty five as seniors. It is only a matter of time, before baby boomers become seniors too.

The big problem for baby boomers and seniors lies in the reality that very soon, there are not going to be enough nurses, personal support workers or even family members to care for them, or perhaps for you, if you are a baby boomer heading into retirement.

Hospitalization or nursing home care may not be feasible or possible for the majority of baby boomers and seniors, in spite of the fact that it will be needed by many of them. For many,? it may mean twenty four hour care, seven days per week.

The actual cost of hospitalization and health care is extremely high already. Many baby boomers and seniors may not be able to afford the kind of care they will need.

What can we do to rectify this situation? Everyone of us has baby boomers and seniors in our lives; many of us are in baby boomer status already, or beyond that age.

Can baby boomers and seniors be cared for in their own homes? Definitely.

Ten tips for managing baby boomer or senior care at home:

1. Baby boomers and seniors are generally most comfortable in their own homes, with their family members and in amongst their own belongings. To take them out of that environment may result in dis-orientation. They are accustomed to the food, temperature, air, etc. and changing any or all of that may result in other, more serious problems. They are used to having people come and go in their lives, as well. This is the world that they know.

2. Safety is a major concern and the majority of baby boomers and seniors feel safe at home. In fact, most of them have already instituted safety precautions for themselves, although this is not always the case. One of the first things that must be taken into consideration is whether or not the baby boomers or seniors are safe. If not, immediate action is necessary on the part of the family or designated care giver.

3. In taking a serious look at health care in the home of baby boomers or seniors, it is always a good idea to do an assessment of the environment, in the light of what is currently happening. This can be done quite easily, by spending quality time with the baby boomers or seniors and other family members. Visiting the family doctor with the baby boomers or seniors, along with other family members is generally a good idea. Remember that many of these men and women will have had the same doctors for many years and their doctors may be almost the same age they are. The doctors will likely know the baby boomers or seniors well and their preferences must be taken into consideration.

4. Remember that baby boomers or seniors in need of care, will have definite ideas about what they expect in terms of their own health care needs. Many of them may not have had sufficient care in the recent past and will improve immensely when their proper health care needs are met. You may be totally amazed at the degree of improvement. They may or may not understand the current changes in the health care system, and you may have to explain it to them.

5. Dietary needs are especially important, as nutrition is a primary factor in health care. Assess the baby boomers or seniors for their ability to provide adequate food to sustain their health. Many of them? may not have sufficient income to provide for their own dietary requirements. They may need to obtain a supplemental income of some kind. A few may be hoarding their disability or old age pension checks and not using them to meet their needs. Find out who is looking after their finances and work with that family member or other person. If necessary, find or designate a family member to take the financial responsibility for them.

6. Assessing medical needs is a huge factor. Many baby boomers or seniors will be in need of wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc. and have never had anyone to help them in this regard. They may need drugs that they cannot afford and will require assistance in that respect. They may require other health care items that can be obtained quite easily. What about their medications? Ask them if they are taking their medications? If not, why not? Where are they obtaining them and are they over-priced? Are they hoarding their medications or using out-dated medications? Have they obtained generic drugs? Do they know what generic drugs are? How are their medications stored? Do they know how to dispose of medications that are outdated or have not been used?

7. Spiritual needs are extremely important to baby boomers and seniors, as the era in which they grew up probably focused on having those needs met. Do they have a priest, pastor or chaplain? Is that person aware of what these baby boomers or other seniors stand in need of at this time in their lives? Make contact with the person of their choice, if they are not able to do so.

8. Have plans been made for baby boomers or seniors, should they pass away unexpectedly? Is there a 'DNR' (do not resuscitate) order request, signed by the baby boomers or seniors, family members and their doctor? Has a will been drawn up? If not, why not? Does he or she have legal counsel? What about power of attorney? This may prove to be extremely important in the future.

9. Fear and paranoia are major issues with baby boomers or seniors, as many have had bad experiences previously with others including health care workers, lawyers, doctors, etc. A lot of them have had their homes broken into and things stolen by people who they have trusted, including family members and friends. It is like losing a part of themselves when there is a violation like this in their homes. It is not easy to get people to trust you when they have been violated in some way, by someone else.

10. Health involves healing, happiness and wholeness. You can be instrumental in bringing this into the life of? baby boomers or seniors as minor care givers, family members, personal support workers or nurses. Consider carefully what you can or cannot do and then make a positive, constructive decision with respect to the baby boomers or seniors in your life or under your care. Care is important, but quality care is even more important.

Remember that there are those around you who have gone through this before and that you are not alone in caring for baby boomers or seniors. There are many organizations which can be of help, as well. What you do can be instrumental in helping others to live to a ripe old age.

Think about doing some of these things for yourself also, if you are a baby boomer or a senior and you could be among the ones who live to be a hundred years of age or older.

Aero Gaga likely to make upset in Ladbrokes Tv Trophy Final

Accidently, the two legendary trainers, M. Wallis and P. Young, have come face to face as their respective pupils, Blonde Reagan and Aero Gaga, are going to compete for the glorious title of the Ladbrokes Tv Trophy Final that is worth ?8000.

For the high-stakes open race, that is scheduled to take place at Monmore on Thursday night, the punters have picked Blonde Reagan as the 6-4 favourite candidate with Aero Gaga being second on the odds list.

But, if we compare the stats and skills of the two, we find that Aero Gaga has relatively higher chances to win this race. The situation is same as the sport fans witnessed on October 17 when Mags Gamble and Bubbly Phoenix clashed in the final game of the All England Cup----Mags Gamble, despite being a non-favourite candidate, accomplished a convincing victory.

In tonight?s contest, Aero Gaga will replicate Mags Gamble. The four-year-old veteran brindle dog marvellously grabbed two big OR triumphs in the last month.

On September 5, he convincingly beat Droopys Aretha by 6 ? lengths to win Champions Night Marathon - Heat 1 at Romford. That was followed by the title of the Champions Night Marathon Final on 15th. Both were impressive ?and amazing performances.

The son of Kinloch Brae out of Great Madam stepped forward to seal top spot in the Ladbrokes.com 835 - Div 2 on October 6. He won that race by the huge margin of 7? lengths.

Since the dawn of the calendar year, Aero Gaga has achieved a number of classy feats at different venues. Thus, he possesses a diverse experience under his belt. Hopefully, he will compete with his utmost strength tonight.

On the other hand, Blonde Reagan has an excellent podium record. Except two times, he has finished in the top three positions throughout his career that began in June 2012.

After winning a T2 race with the margin of 16? lengths on October 9, he sealed first position in the Ladbrokes Tv Trophy Heat 1 on 18th.

Thus, the stage is all set for the rip-roaring battle between Blonde Reagan and Aero Gaga. Good luck to the both.

Ford deepens European cuts, sees $3 billion in losses

LONDON/DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford motor Co unleashed a second volley of European job cuts and plant closures on Thursday in a bid to halt regional losses that the automaker now expects to surpass $3 billion over two years.

Ford told British unions Thursday it would scrap its Southampton van factory and an associated stamping facility in Dagenham in mid-2013, slashing 1,400 jobs and ending vehicle manufacturing by Ford in Britain.

The move comes a day after Ford announced it would close a major car plant in Genk, Belgium, in late 2014. In all, Ford cut 6,200 jobs and reduced European production capacity by 18 percent to save $450 million to $500 million a year.

Ford also said it expects to lose more than $1.5 billion in the region this year, up from its earlier $1 billion forecast. Ford expects a similar loss next year, when the European car sales are expected to be, at best, on par with 2012 levels.

"We are really trying to reflect the reality" of the economic slowdown and industry downturn in Europe, Chief Executive Alan Mulally told analysts and reporters on a conference call. "That's why we need to move decisively now."

With no market recovery in sight, car makers are struggling to scrap underused factories and cut surplus jobs that are fueling losses in Europe. The Southampton plant was the fourth European vehicle plant closure announced this year.

Workers at Ford's British plants were distraught. "It's a kick in the teeth," said Dominic O'Callaghan, a shop steward at Dagenham. "The guys worked hard."

Thursday marked the second time this year Ford has boosted its estimated loss for Europe, reflecting the rapid, surprising deterioration in a region where Ford lost $27 million last year.

In early 2012, Ford forecast a loss this year of up to $600 million in Europe. In July, that estimate ballooned to $1 billion. Now Ford says it will lose at least $3 billion this year and next, when vehicle sales in Europe are expected to hover at or below 14 million.

"If you had asked me two years ago, I would have said that's the trough," Stephen Odell, Ford's head of Europe, said on the conference call. "It's difficult to predict. It does feel like we're running at a very low level."

GRIM WEEK

Ford's actions cap a grim week for the industry. Chinese-owned Volvo Car Corp said it was cutting production in Belgium, while Germany's Daimler warned that profit margins would not improve next year.

Ford's plant closures will not be enough to address the industry's broader problems. Production capacity in Europe outstrips current demand by 9 million vehicles, Guggenheim analyst Matthew Stover estimated.

To cope with the flagging market, Ford has cut marketing and advertising costs, offered buyouts to salaried workers and taken out "any flex we saw in the system," Odell said.

But executives also left open the possibility of further actions if a recovery in Europe fails to materialize.

"What we'll continue to do is look at the reality that we're facing, just like we do every day, all the time," Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks said in an interview. "We'll respond as appropriate to strengthen the business."

Shanks said Ford should post a smaller European loss in 2014 before being profitable in the region by mid-decade. Ford is aiming for operating margins between 6 percent and 8 percent in the medium term.

PEUGEOT, GM

During the conference call, Odell raised questions about the legality of PSA Peugeot Citroen's recent French government-backed $9.1 billion refinancing deal. PSA has encountered stiff government and union resistance to 8,000 planned job cuts and the closure of its Aulnay plant.

Meanwhile, General Motors' Opel division is in protracted talks to slash jobs and close its Bochum plant in Germany - but not before 2016.

"What's remarkable about Ford is how quickly things are moving, which is a sign of good management," said London-based UBS analyst Philippe Houchois. "With GM Europe, you always wonder what's going on - it looks like they are still bogged down in deciding what to do."

'INDUSTRIAL COURAGE'

Future versions of Ford's Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy, currently assembled in Genk, will be moved to the automaker's plant in Valencia, Spain. The new Mondeo, which made its public debut last month at the Paris show, will be introduced in late 2014, at least 18 months later than originally scheduled.

Southampton's production, which last year fell short of 30,000 vehicles, is to be transferred to Ford's existing Transit plant in Turkey, under the plans announced on Thursday.

Ford's stamping and tooling plant in Dagenham, Essex, will also close next year, the company said. The facility employs 930 workers.

Staff in Southampton were told to down tools and take the day off as news of the closures broke, and most said they were heading to the pub. The U.S. automaker currently employs 11,400 British workers at sites including Halewood, near Liverpool, and Bridgend in South Wales.

Britain will remain a centre of "powertrain excellence" for the automaker, Odell said.

The company announced a "next-generation low-CO2 2.0-litre diesel" to be made in Dagenham that would power future Ford vehicles from 2016. It also said additional investment was expected at Bridgend to support ongoing high volumes of gasoline engine manufacturing.

"Ford is demonstrating the vision and industrial courage to make tough decisions today that will pay off long term," Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said in a note to investors.

Jonas, who had previously expected Ford to continue reporting European losses through 2015, said its restructuring measures could bring the breakeven forward one year.

Ford deepens European cuts, sees $3 billion losses

LONDON/DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford unleashed a second volley of European job cuts and plant closures on Thursday to try to halt regional losses it expects to total $3 billion over two years.

A day after announcing the closure of a major car plant in Genk, Belgium, Ford told British unions it would scrap its Southampton van factory and an associated stamping facility in Dagenham next year, slashing 1,400 jobs.

Thursday's announced closures end vehicle manufacturing by Ford in Britain and bring its total job cuts to 6,200, reducing European production capacity by 18 percent to save $450-500 million a year, the company said.

With no market recovery in sight, car makers are struggling to scrap underused factories and surplus jobs that are racking up losses in Europe.

The Southampton plant was the fourth European vehicle plant closure announced this year.

Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally told reporters and analysts the cutbacks were designed to "return profitability to our very important European operations by mid-decade", setting new medium-term operating margin goal of 6-8 percent.

Stephen Odell, chief executive of Ford of Europe, said during the same call that Peugeot's , French government-backed refinancing deal announced on Wednesday raised questions, highlighting transatlantic tension over the industry.

"I don't think it's sustainable for support from governments to keep competitive companies going forward, particularly in a protracted downsized economy," he said.

Workers at Ford's British plants were distraught. "It's a kick in the teeth," said Dominic O'Callaghan, 39, a shop steward at Dagenham. "The guys worked hard."

PSA Peugeot Citroen has encountered stiff government and union resistance to 8,000 planned job cuts and the closure of its Aulnay plant, while General Motors' Opel division is in protracted talks to slash jobs and close its Bochum plant in Germany - but not before 2016.

"What's remarkable about Ford is how quickly things are moving, which is a sign of good management," said London-based UBS analyst Philippe Houchois.

"With GM Europe you always wonder what's going on - it looks like they are still bogged down in deciding what to do."

Ford had previously forecast a full-year European loss in excess of $1 billion, without giving further guidance.

On Thursday the company increased the loss forecast to more than $1.5 billion and said it would likely be repeated next year. But Ford said overall pre-tax profit improved in the third quarter, excluding non-recurring items.

The announcements came in a grim week for the industry. On Thursday Chinese-owned Volvo Car Corporation said it was cutting production in Belgium, while Germany's Daimler said late on Wednesday it would not improve profit margins next year.

Ford said future versions of the Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy, currently assembled in Genk, will be moved to Ford's plant in Valencia Spain, the company said on Wednesday. The new Mondeo will be introduced in late 2014 after an 18-month delay.

Southampton's production, which last year fell short of 30,000 vehicles, is to be transferred to Ford's existing Transit plant in Turkey, under the plans announced on Thursday.

Others including Christoph Stuermer of consulting firm IHS Automotive said further upheaval was yet to come at Ford.

"One other passenger-car factory will have to close," Stuermer predicted.

GENEVA (AP) ? A top U.N. official says he hopes that the U.N.-brokered cease-fire in Syria will take place, but he warns that there are no guarantees it will hold.

The 15-nation U.N. Security Council endorsed the idea of a temporary truce, proposed by the U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria with the aim of setting up talks on ending the country's 19-month-old conflict.

"We hope that they both realize the importance of a pause in the fighting ... in the symbolic quieting the silence of the guns," said Jan Eliasson Eliasson, the U.N. Deputy Secretary-General. "But the most important thing is that it could perhaps create a political environment, where political talks are possible," he said Thursday.

Lakhdar Brahimi, the envoy, has warned that the failure of yet another U.N. cease-fire plan would only worsen the fighting.

'Space Buddha' statue may be a fake

A supposed Buddhist statue allegedly carved from a meteorite 1,000 years ago may not be as ancient as suspected, according to a Buddhism expert who argues that the statue may be a 20th-century fake.

The criticisms don't target the material the statue is carved from, which is an iron- and nickel-rich meteorite from the Siberia-Mongolia border. But outside experts are questioning the statue's origins.

Achim Bayer, a Buddhism expert at Dongguk University in South Korea, argues in a new report that the Buddha statue has obvious "pseudo-Tibetan features," marking it as a European reproduction likely made between 1910 and 1970.

    4. Scientists solve mystery of singing sands

Among these features are European-like shoes that come to the ankles rather than boots; trousers instead of robes; tube-shaped sleeves unlike those seen on traditional Tibetan or Mongolian garb; a full beard, which is not seen on Tibetan and Mongolian deity sculptures; an unusual single earring; and a cape that resembles one worn by Romans rather than ancient Tibetan deities.

In their original paper published in the journal Meteoritics & Planetary Science, Stuttgart University researcher Elmar Bucher and colleagues reported that the Buddha statue first came to Germany after a 1938-1939 Tibet expedition by zoologist and ethnologist Ernst Sch?fer, who was sent to the region by the Nazi party to find the origin of Aryan language and culture. The statue then passed into the hands of a private owner. [ Fallen Stars: A Gallery of Famous Meteorites ]

But the researchers also warned that the estimates of the age of the statue ? which they pegged around 1,000 years ? were preliminary and welcomed comments by cultural scholars.

"I am happy to provide such information," Bayer wrote in his report, available online.

Beyond the origins of the statue, Bayer also called into question the idea that it was brought to Germany by a Nazi expedition in the late 1930s. Isrun Engelhardt, a German historian who has studied these expeditions, told Bayer that the controversial statue likely did not arrive in Germany in Nazi hands.

Bayer suspects the statue was either produced for the antique market or for the Nazi memorabilia market, with the expedition story meant to increase the value of the statue.

WH spokesman tries to explain Obama?s 'BS' remark

RICHMOND, Va -- After President Barack Obama reportedly suggested during an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine that?Republican challenger Mitt Romney was "a bullshitter," ?adviser Dan Pfeiffer said his comment points to underlying "trust" issues with Romney.

"What is true is that trust is a very important part of the election," Pfeiffer, who said he had not yet seen the article, told reporters during Obama's campaign swing through Florida, Virginia and Ohio Thursday. "The president is someone who says what he means and does what he says and Gov. Romney's answers in the debates on domestic issues and foreign policy raise real questions about that."

In a forthcoming article in Rolling Stone, Obama reportedly told author Douglas Brinkley that children can instinctively tell that his opponent is "a bullshitter." Politico published an excerpt Thursday morning.

Since Monday's presidential debate, Obama has made an effort to raise questions about Romney's integrity. Last week he coined the word "Romnesia" to describe what he claims to be Romney's tendency to shift and moderate his positions closer to the election.

Listeners should not be "distracted by the word," but to "focus on the issue," Pfeiffer added. "The president addressed that issue in his stump speech today and he's done it throughout this trip."

School "hand hygiene" plan shows no asthma benefit

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - An arsenal of hand sanitizers, hygiene education and good old-fashioned soap failed to prevent asthma attacks among school children in one Alabama county.

For children with asthma, the common cold is the top trigger of symptom attacks. So in theory, cleaner hands at school could mean fewer colds being passed around - and fewer asthma attacks.

But in a new clinical trial, researchers found that kids at schools with a "hand hygiene" plan, including alcohol-based hand sanitizers, suffered asthma attacks just often as their peers at other schools.

The findings are not, however, the final word, according to Lynn B. Gerald, a professor of health promotion sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson who led the study.

That's because the trial hit an obstacle when the H1N1 "swine" flu epidemic broke out right at the study's outset: All of the schools in the trial became a lot more vigilant about clean hands, Gerald said.

Schools that weren't part of the hand-hygiene program started putting hand sanitizer on the list of school supplies given to parents.

"Hand sanitizer became ubiquitous in schools," Gerald said.

So, she told Reuters Health, it's hard to draw conclusions about whether hand sanitizers, added to old-fashioned hand washing, might prevent some asthma attacks.

The sanitizers and soap used in the trial were provided to schools for free by Akron, Ohio-based GOJO, which makes the Purell brand hand sanitizers.

GOJO "believes there is great benefit in establishing the effectiveness of hand hygiene interventions under real-world conditions and supports scientific studies that take that approach," the company told Reuters Health.

"We agree with the conclusion that the results of this study were highly confounded by increased overall hand hygiene practices, even in the usual-care schools, as a result of the H1N1 pandemic," they said in an emailed statement.

The findings appear in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

VALUE OF INVESTMENT UNCLEAR

Frequent hand washing is one of the keys to protecting yourself from colds and the flu, or from passing the viruses to other people. But soap and water are not always at the ready, and even in school bathrooms soap dispensers may be broken or empty - especially at low-income schools like the ones in this trial, Gerald noted.

Many schools already have hand sanitizer available. At some schools, that's all they use, Gerald said. But no one knows how effective the products are versus soap and water alone.

For the current study, Gerald's team randomly assigned 31 Alabama elementary schools to either follow a special hand hygiene plan or stick with their standard ways for one school year. The schools then switched groups for the following school year.

When schools were on the hand hygiene plan, they were given hand soap for the bathrooms, and alcohol-based hand sanitizer for the bathrooms and classrooms. Students were also taught about good hand hygiene.

Gerald's team then focused on 527 students who had asthma. They found that over the two years, kids had no fewer asthma attacks when their school provided soap, sanitizers and education.

Still, the swine flu outbreak muddied the waters, according to Gerald. Asthma attacks spiked across the schools in the fall of 2009, when the swine flu was at its peak. In October, 41 percent of asthmatic kids in both groups of schools had a symptom attack, versus about 25 percent in October 2010.

And since hand sanitizers became so widely used after the swine flu arrived, the study essentially lost its "control" group.

But while these findings don't mean hand sanitizers are useless against asthma, there's also little evidence that their use in schools benefits kids.

Some other in-school clinical trials have failed to show that hand sanitizers cut down on kids' colds and flu, Gerald and her colleagues point out.

"Hand washing is probably best, and it's cheapest," Gerald said.

"It's unclear right now," she added, "whether hand sanitizers are a worthwhile investment for schools."

Gerald thinks studies should continue to look at the question, though. One reason is the fact that some schools are already using hand sanitizers, sometimes as a replacement for soap and water.

"I think we need to know how they can be used most effectively," Gerald said.

Many parents may be sending their kids off to school with a little bottle of hand sanitizer. That may or may not be helpful.

Gerald suggested teaching your kids about good hygiene in general, whether they have asthma or not. That includes hand washing, "covering up" when you cough, and keeping your fingers away from your mouth and eyes, she said.

GOJO said it "hopes the researchers will continue to study the effect of hand hygiene to reduce asthma rates with future scientific studies conducted in real world settings."

None of the researchers reports any connection to the company, but one of Gerald's colleagues on the work has ties to drug companies that make asthma medication.

Tension brewing among those providing service dogs to U.S. military veterans

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -

Stories like Jim Stanek's are common and quickly multiplying: An Iraqi war veteran with post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, he says his life was saved by a dog that gave him the confidence to do seemingly simple things, like go out to dinner and look his wife in the eye rather than watch his own back.

But the growing list of small nonprofits involved in training affordable assistance dogs for vets like Stanek has created a Wild West-type atmosphere in the service dog world, creating tension between mom-and-pop groups trying to fill what they call a crucial void and the Veterans Administration and more traditional service dog groups.

Exacerbating the situation are several recent actions by the VA, including a decision against covering the cost of service dogs for PTSD and traumatic brain injuries until a study on the scientific benefits can be completed ? a study that has itself been plagued with potential delays and problems, including issues with aggression of some of the participating dogs.

At the same time, the VA refused to loosen its requirement that service dogs it covers be trained by groups accredited by either Assistance Dogs International or the International Guide Dog Federation.

The actions are frustrating to people like Stanek, who was unable to obtain his own service dog through traditional channels.

"I tried like nine different times to get a service dog through organizations," he said. "The door kept closing. I didn't have the money. They can cost $10,000 to $30,000 to $60,000."

So he and his wife, Lindsey, a former veterinary clinic worker, decided to train their own rescue dog, Sarge, to be his service dog. That led to the creation of Paws and Stripes, which in nearly two years has matched almost 50 veterans with shelter dogs.

The owners select their adult dog from a group of pre-screened shelter dogs. The dogs go home immediately with the veteran, then the pair goes through six months of training so the dogs can learn to assist their owners, whether it's to help them physically or just to provide that back-watching peace of mind that many Iraqi and Afghan war veterans need to do simple things like go into a shopping mall, or sit down to dinner in a restaurant and relax, knowing strangers are behind them.

Paws and Stripes has a waiting list of 600 vets from around the country. But like a number of similar operations around the country, it is not affiliated with one of the major service dog accreditation groups, although it is working on its application to join ADI.

Because of its lack of affiliation and accreditation, Stanek said he had to fight to get his dogs approved for admittance to VA facilities. "A lot of people are trying to get away with bringing their pet with them to the hospital," said his wife, Lindsey. "That bad apple is ruining it for everyone."

Still, the wide variance in training standards among groups like Paws and Stripes is raising questions in the traditional service dog world.

Using shelter dogs, most of whose background and true temperament is unknown, is "like playing Russian Roulette," said Corey Hudson, secretary of ADI and CEO of Canine Companions for Independence in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Hudson notes that his group uses only dogs bred specifically for training to be guide dogs or service dogs, and still "only about 45 percent graduate."

"We want to place a dog that makes them more independent, not dependent," he said. "Accreditation is a safeguard."

Sharon Wilson, executive director of Freedom Service Dogs, which works with soldiers from the Wounded Warriors program at Fort Carson, Colo., says her organization also uses shelter dogs in part because Colorado has an abundance of labs and other good service breeds in its shelters. Her group does not place the dogs until they have been trained in house for 7 to 9 months.

"PTSD dogs have to be what I call bomb proof," she said. "You have to know how they are going to react when that pit bull walks by."

Barbara Teasdale, founder of the San Francisco-based Vets Adopt Pets, which hooks veterans up with groups that adopt shelter dogs or provide service animals, says there is a need for standards. But she notes that many of the groups working to help vets are small "labor of love operations" that can't afford accreditation fees.

And the groups are filling two needs: helping vets and giving homeless dogs a second chance, she said.

One thing they all seem to agree on, however, is that dogs do help soldiers suffering PTSD.

"For instance, we had a client who had night terrors," said Wilson. "He would wake up in the middle of the night just screaming. His dog was taught when he starts getting restless, the dog would turn the light on ... then jump in bed and push his body as close as he could. His wife said his breathing would start to mirror the dog's and he would never wake up."

Stanek compares his relationship with his dog to that of a sniper and a spotter in the military.

"Sarge is my spotter. When we go out, she lets me know what's going on. She lets me know how I am doing," he says. "On a scale of one to 10, I used to sit at about an eight or nine on a constant basis ? like wake up that way. Now I sit around at two or three. And Sarge will alert me when that level starts to rise."

Sprint please answer or explain why the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II is not a World phone?

Please tell us why Sprint is taking phones that can work oversea and making them so that they can't be used over seas. I am still using a HTC Touch Pro 2 which is a world phone. I missed out on the Photon 4G which could also be used overseas and in its place you released the Photon Q which can not be used overseas due to the sim card being embeded in the phone. So did Sprint sign a contract with Apple and Blackberry to only sell their phones as World phones or International phones?

Tablet PCs Have Changed The "Rules" Of Website Design ...

Technology today has meant that everyone who owns a mobile phone or a tablet PC can access the Internet on their devices no matter where they are. No one has to use either a laptop or static computer to get online whether for business purposes or pleasure.

This has meant that many people who want websites built for them have to rethink just how they need to go about it. Web designers have been faced with the new challenge of where the ?fold? should appear on the smaller and larger displays that people use. Many website designers predict the death of the fold and have done so for quite a while now.

This is due to the fact that people who surf the Net no longer need to be on 19? monitors with resolutions of anything between 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 700. Screens today can be as small as those in iPhones or as large as a 60? HDTV. But it is not just the resolution that can be dramatically different as the aspect ratio of screens today can change by the slightest movement.

Whereas in the old days ?above the fold? was the area of a webpage where all the important information would appear and where eye catching imagery as well as the call to action buttons would be placed so that viewers did not have to scroll down the page to glean any information they needed to find, today this no longer applies even though in the past it was a matter of debate.

Today web designers have come to understand that the balance of a page is the all important factor as to how the page works. The fold still has to be adhered to, but the need for viewers to scroll down the page has gained importance in so far as anyone looking at the page discovers more things of interest as they go down it.

The top of the page needs to grab the viewers? attention, but they then need to be encouraged to find out more information by being tempted to scroll down it. The point is that no one can now claim that the ?fold? is in a specific place anymore as there are too many variables which come into play for this to be possible.

Some website designers believe that the first fold should still contain the eye catching information but then there should be a second fold which would have an added bonus for those who are using mobile devices and tablet computers, and that by applying an approximate ratio instead of basing it on fixed pixel measurements, you would indeed be designing a relative effective web page.

People who surf the Internet today scroll down web pages, they have to so the tendency to automatically do this is greatly increased. This offers web designers a lot more scope as to where they place information on the page. The now common day use of tablet PCs has opened the door to a new way of looking at webpage designs and therefore the whole concept of how a website should appear.
