Professor Xu Xingwang of the Department of Mathematics at National University of Singapore (NUS), along with Dr Chen Xuezhang from Nanjing University of China, has established a new method to tackle this long-standing problem.
What it used to be
Of the various different ways to measure the roughness of the sphere, the scalar curvature measurement has proven to be the weakest one, resulting in a problem commonly known mathematically as the prescribing scalar curvature problem.
The prescribing scalar curvature problem has been an issue for mathematicians for more than half a century. Many great mathematicians have in fact made crucial contributions to it over time, converting the prevalent mathematical problem into the uncovering of a positive solution of elliptic type partial differential equations.
Such equation demonstrates invariance under a non-compact group; a bubbling phenomenon (i.e. a very sharp needle) can occur. Among many mathematicians, it is known that these two difficulties can only surface in particular manifolds, namely, the prefect sphere case.
In the seventies, French mathematician, T. Aubin, proved an interesting result. He found that if the rough sphere is relatively flat, up to some second lowest tone, it can be deformed to the prefect sphere without changing its angle measure.
In the early nineties, A. Chang and P. Yang, both professors of Princeton University, revisited the mathematical problem and found that if the rough sphere is sufficiently close to the prefect sphere and has no degenerative sharp needle with extra technical assumptions, the deformation is possible. Their argument was made based on the perturbation method and the calculus of variation.
In the recent 10 years, the most significant mathematical achievement is the re-confirmation of the famous Poincare conjecture. Among mathematicians, it is known that the proof is through the powerful Hamilton's Ricci flow, which was introduced nearly 30 years ago. The success in the Poincare conjecture motivated many to re-examine the Ricci flow and apply it to other important mathematical problems.
New mathematical method
On revisiting the age-old problem, Prof Xu and Dr Chen adapted the Hamilton's Ricci flow method to the prescribing scalar curvature problem.
Prof Xu said: "We obtained in a sense the best possible conclusion under the same assumption as the one made by Aubin and Chang-Yang. Basically, we demonstrated that with Aubin's relative flatness assumption plus Chang-Yang's topological assumptions, the problem is solvable. The important observation made in this work is that the relative flatness offered by Aubin is in fact to ensure that the flow can have only one sharp needle, which in turn makes the blow-up analysis much easier."
Developing a new method attached to the older problem with the same assumptions as what have been done, they came up with a stronger conclusion.
Another tool used in their work was the infinitely dimensional Morse theory. As the theory is well-known, the team found that the challenge was to control the energy level; after all the global existence depends on the initial energy level.
They reported their findings in their paper entitled 'The scalar curvature flow on S^n perturbation theorem revisited', which was published this February in Inventiones, one of the most prestigious journals in the mathematical community.

ABBOTTABAD, Pakistan (AP) ? Pakistan was more than halfway done Sunday demolishing the three-story compound where Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. commandos last May, erasing a concrete reminder of a painful and embarrassing chapter in the country's history.
Rings of police kept spectators and journalists away from the compound, which the government began tearing down Saturday night under powerful floodlights without providing prior notice. Three mechanized backhoes ripped into the building, according to an Associated Press reporter who was able to get close enough to see the work.
Pakistan was outraged by the covert American raid in the northwestern town of Abbottabad because it was not told about it beforehand ? a decision the U.S. explained was driven by concerns that someone in the government might tip off bin Laden.
The terror leader's death was cheered across the globe, but many Pakistanis were angry that the U.S. violated its territory and that its troops were powerless to stop American soldiers from attacking a compound located next to the country's elite military academy.
The backhoes ? heavy machines with strong crane-like digging arms ? have torn down the tall boundary walls around bin Laden's compound and have destroyed more than half of the main building, where the al-Qaida chief lived for years with his wives and children.
Army soldiers who were guarding the compound Saturday night handed authority over to the police in the morning and left. Work continued Sunday morning but paused around midday so that large trucks could carry away the debris.
Pakistani officials have declined to say why they decided to begin demolition.
Residents of the normally sleepy town of Abbottabad were divided on what the government should do with the compound in the aftermath of the raid. Some thought it should be destroyed, but others believed it should be turned into a tourist attraction to help the town earn money. There was always the danger, however, that it could also draw al-Qaida supporters.
American officials said they buried bin Laden's body at sea to avoid giving his followers a burial place that could become a makeshift shrine.
Many U.S. officials expressed disbelief that bin Laden could have lived in Abbottabad for around six years without the Pakistani government knowing. But the U.S. has not found any evidence that senior Pakistani officials knew of the al-Qaida chief's whereabouts.
The U.S. Navy SEALs who attacked bin Laden's compound on May 2 infiltrated by helicopter from neighboring Afghanistan. The raid, which lasted around 40 minutes, was a serious blow to the already troubled U.S.-Pakistan relationship.
Pakistan responded by kicking out more than 100 U.S. troops training Pakistanis in counterterrorism operations and reduced the level of intelligence cooperation.
Some members of Congress called on the U.S. to cut of the billions of dollars of military and civilian aid to Pakistan unless Islamabad explained bin Laden's presence in Abbottabad and boosted cooperation on the Afghan war. The aid has continued, although at a somewhat lower level.

"It looks like we don't want to show our face and Ukraine will be associated with a different continent, somewhere in Africa."
Svoboda is not represented in parliament, but has been gaining popularity recently.
Gaitana strongly condemned Sirotyuk's statement, saying it tarnishes Ukraine.
"I am very much ashamed for such racist statements, because they destroy Ukraine's reputation in front of the whole world," Gaitana told reporters. "We are doing everything we can so that Ukraine becomes a part of the European family, a part of the world, so that nobody would be afraid to come here and have children here."
Hanna Herman, an adviser to President Viktor Yanukovych, also spoke out against the statement, saying that Ukrainians should not be divided according to the color of their skin, their faith or their language.
Ukraine's National Television, which held the contest where Gaitana was selected by a combined vote of viewers and jurors, demanded that Sirotyuk apologize to Gaitana.
Sirotyuk told The Associated Press that he has nothing to apologize for.
