Q&A WITH The Mayor, on Year One

?

Malden?s inaugurated its first new mayor in 16 years when former Ward One City Councillor Gary Christenson took the oath of office on Jan. 2, 2012. The Observer recently caught up with Christenson to discuss how things went in year one, and ask about what?s on tap for 2013?

?

Q In January, you'll mark one year since being inaugurated. How would you describe your first year in office?

?

A. It?s been non-stop from day one. Some caution me to slow down, but I live by the adage that what you put in is what you get out.

I am working as hard as I can on a daily basis to help our community achieve success because that?s what our residents expect and deserve. I find that by being out in the community I am able to actually meet our residents and business owners whose ideas and suggestions provide a valuable resource in improving services.

All in all, it?s been a great first year and I am honored to have the opportunity to serve this community.

?

Q What are your favorite accomplishments from the first year?

A Our enhanced means of communicating directly with the community is one of my favorite and proudest accomplishments. From Facebook to Twitter to Online Forums, these outlets encourage community participation and allow residents the ability to interact with us more easily.

I am also proud of the opportunities and resources we have provided our youth. The Mayor?s Summer Jobs for Teens program tripled the number of youth served last summer and I was delighted to be at the recent ribbon cutting of the Malden Teen Enrichment Center. Our teens now have a safe place to do their homework and learn new life skills.

I was also honored to assist with the Macdonald Stadium renovation and the development of our Bike to the Sea path.

Additionally, from a city financial perspective, I found it very rewarding to be able to increase the residential tax exemption from 20 to 30 percent and adopt a policy that will require the city to keep 7.5 percent worth of reserves in place, which will improve the city?s long-term financial standing.

?

Q How about the greatest challenges?

A Without a doubt, crime prevention has been the biggest challenge. I remember each incident like it was yesterday but on a positive note, I remember the response of our police officers. They are working hard and while we continue to rebuild the ranks, I believe some of the short-term strategies-- like meeting with the Middlesex District Attorney?s Office on a monthly basis to track some of our more problematic individuals-- and working to bring in an organization like Roca, Inc. to deliver high-risk intervention services will help in the interim.

Of course, some of these initiatives cost money and that also continues to be a challenge for Malden. Just this month, the state imposed mid-year cuts and with the looming fiscal problems at the federal level, budget concerns will remain a great test moving forward.

?

Q What do you anticipate being your top priorities in 2013?

A Moving City Hall, reconnecting Pleasant Street, and redeveloping the current Government Center site to connect the MBTA with our downtown.

?To address the challenges outlined above, the City will need to generate more revenue and development of this parcel and the enhancement of our downtown economy is the way to accomplish that goal.

?Replacing the current National Grid site with a 6,500 baseball park is another means to support that goal.

Along those lines, another important priority will be to relocate Public Works and consolidate some of our other departments to provide one-stop shopping for our customers.

?I look forward to seeing recommendations from the groups of residents reviewing PAYT and Walkability that can be implemented in the New Year. The adoption of a Capital Improvement Program will be an important item for the City. Street and sidewalk improvements along with technology initiatives will be a featured part of our proposal to the City Council in early 2013.

In regards to technology, we will be introducing a new way for residents and businesses to submit their service requests to the city. In March 2013, modeling the City of Boston?s successful Citizens Connect Smartphone application, Malden will be adopting and expanding the use of this function. As an example, if a resident sees graffiti on the street they can simply take a picture using their Smartphone and with one click the request will be automatically sent to the Department of Public Works. Once the graffiti is removed, the resident will be notified on their Smartphone that the issue has been resolved. Being fiscally prudent to address the ongoing budget issues at the state and federal levels will also be a major priority.

?

Q Anything else you'd like to add?

?

A As I mentioned above, I am truly honored to play an important role in Malden?s future and I look forward to working with the entire community to add to Malden?s Strong Past and Proud Future. In the meantime, I would like to wish everyone a safe and wonderful holiday season.

India rape sets off debate over women's rights

NEW DELHI (AP) ? India's army and navy canceled New Year's celebrations on Monday out of respect for a New Delhi student whose gang-rape and murder has set off an impassioned debate about what the nation needs to do to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

Protesters and politicians have called for tougher rape laws, major police reforms and a transformation in the way the country treats its women.

"To change a society as conservative, traditional and patriarchal as ours, we will have a long haul," said Ranjana Kumari, director of the Center for Social Research. "It will take some time, but certainly there is a beginning."

The country remained in mourning Monday, two days after the 23-year-old physiotherapy student died from her internal wounds in the Singapore hospital where she had been sent for emergency treatment. Six men have been arrested and charged with murder in the Dec. 16 attack on a New Delhi bus. They face the death penalty if convicted, police said.

The army and navy canceled their New Year's celebrations, as did Sonia Gandhi, head of the ruling Congress party. Hotels and clubs across the capital also said they would forego their usual parties.

"She has become the daughter of the entire nation," said Sushma Swaraj, a leader of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party.

Hundreds of mourners continued their daily protests near Parliament demanding swift government action.

"So much needs to be done to end the oppression of women," said Murarinath Kushwaha, a man whose two friends were on a hunger strike to draw attention to the issue.

Some commentators compared the rape victim, whose name has not been released by police, to Mohamed Bouazizi, the Tunisian street vendor whose self-immolation set off the Arab Spring. There was hope her tragedy could mark a turning point for gender rights in a country where women often refuse to leave their homes at night out of fear and where sex-selective abortions and even female infanticide have wildly skewed the gender ratio.

"It cannot be business as usual anymore," the Hindustan Times newspaper wrote in an editorial.

Politicians from across the spectrum called for a special session of Parliament to pass new laws to increase punishments for rapists ? including possible chemical castration ? and to set up fast-track courts to deal with rape cases within 90 days.

The government has proposed creating a public database of convicted rapists to shame them, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has set up two committees to look into what lapses led to the rape and to propose changes in the law.

The Delhi government on Monday inaugurated a new helpline ? 181 ? for women, though it wasn't working because of glitches.

Responding to complaints that police refuse to file cases of abuse or harassment brought by women, the city force has appointed an officer to meet with women's groups monthly and crack down on the problem, New Delhi Lt. Gov. Tejendra Khanna said.

"We have mandated that any time any lady visits a police station with a complaint, it has to be recorded on the spot," he said.

Kumari said the Delhi police commissioner sent her a message Monday asking her group to restart police sensitivity training that it had suspended due to lack of funds.

There have also been proposals to install a quota to ensure one-third of Delhi's police are women.

There also have been signs of a change in the public debate about crimes against women.

Other rapes suddenly have become front-page news in Indian newspapers, and politicians are being heavily criticized for any remarks considered misogynistic or unsympathetic to women.

A state legislator from Rajasthan was ridiculed Monday across TV news channels after suggesting that one way to stop rapes would be to change girls' school uniforms to pants instead of skirts.

"How can he tell us to change our clothes?" said Gureet Kaur, a student protester in the Rajasthani town of Alwar. "Why can't girls live freely?"

Some activists have accused politicians of being so cossetted in their security bubbles that they have no idea of the daily travails people are suffering.

Kumari said the country was failing in its basic responsibility to protect its citizens. But she was heartened to see so many young men at the protests along with women.

"I have never heard so many people who felt so deep down hurt," she said. "It will definitely have some impact."

In Geneva, the U.N. human rights chief called Monday for fundamental change in India.

"Let us hope that 2013 will be the year the tide is turned on violence against women in India and all women can walk free without fear," said Navi Pillay, the U.N. high commissioner for human rights. "The public is demanding a transformation in systems that discriminate against women to a culture that respects the dignity of women in law and practice," she said in a statement.

Pillay, a South African of Indian origin, urged Indians not to give in to calls for capital punishment for rapists. "However terrible the crime, the death penalty is not the answer," she said.

College Basketball: Regents' rally falls short against Millikin men

ROCKFORD ? With a couple of bounds off the rim, Rockford College?s hot streak to end the year turned cold.

Scott Suchy got good looks at a pair of 3-pointers that would have tied the game in the last 30 seconds but came up short on each, and the Regents watched as their comeback did the same.

Millikin got 26 points, including 7-for-12 shooting from 3-point range, from Trent Windemuller and pulled off a 78-75 win Saturday in Rockford.

?Somehow we were still in this until the end,? Rockford senior leader Grant Olsen (12 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 0 turnovers) said. ?We kept fighting, and we had a shot.?

Suchy missed the late 3s, but the junior transfer from Kishwaukee still finished with 20 points and seven rebounds. He also brought Rockford all the way back from a double-digit, second-half deficit, cutting it to one with under five minutes to play on his final trey of the day.

The Big Blue did not make a field goal in the final 1:49, and went 5-for-16 from the free-throw line in the game. But the Regents made 3-for-14 from long range in the second half, and they were unable to keep their recent surge alive.

Now Regent head coach Ryan Rebsom is hoping they can regain some of that momentum before 2013 arrives. Rockford, which closes out the year with a road game Monday in Joliet, won five of its past six to climb to .500 on the season headed into Saturday?s game.

?Yeah, well, we?ve been making steps. When this team is hitting its shots, we can beat anybody,? he said. ?But, even right now, we?re still an average defensive team, and we don?t talk enough, and we don?t do the things we have to do defensively to win these close ones.?

Women in title game
Rockford held off Spalding 66-62 for a road win that goes down as its second win of the season. Erin Ryczek posted 16 points and Lindsay Lengjak added 14 points as the Regents advanced to the DePauw University Tournament championship game at 5 p.m. today.

With hours remaining, fiscal deal uncertain

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The chances of a deal to prevent the economy from tumbling over a "fiscal cliff" remained uncertain on Sunday as lawmakers haggled over how to prevent taxes for all Americans from rising on New Year's Day.

Aides to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell worked on a compromise to stop automatic tax hikes for most Americans on January 1. Any agreement needs to be rushed through both chambers of Congress before midnight on Monday.

One Democratic Senate aide said it was uncertain whether the leaders would reach an accord. Reid and McConnell had been aiming to have an agreement by 3 p.m. EST (2000 GMT) so that they could present it to previously scheduled closed-door meetings of their party colleagues.

"It is going to be difficult," the aide said. Senate Chaplain Barry Black opened a rare Sunday session of the chamber with a plea to God for lawmakers to avoid damaging the economy through their squabbling.

"Look with favor on our nation and save us from self-inflicted wounds," Black said in a prayer.

If the politicians cannot agree, then tax increases and across-the-board government spending cuts will begin on January 1. That would take $600 billion out of the economy, push unemployment up and curb federal spending.

The main focus of negotiations was tax hikes on the wealthy, an increase sought by President Barack Obama but opposed by Republicans, particularly fiscal conservatives in the House of Representatives.

Obama made a rare appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" to pressure lawmakers into forging a deal.

Senators appearing on other Sunday morning shows expressed optimism that an agreement could be reached.

"Well, there are certainly no breakthroughs yet between Senator McConnell and Senator Reid, but there's a real possibility of a deal," Senator Charles Schumer, a Democrat from New York, said on the ABC program "This Week."

"I don't disagree with Chuck," said Senator Jon Kyl, a Republican from Arizona.

Another Republican senator, Lindsey Graham, conceded that an agreement would end up raising income taxes on the wealthy, thus sparing the rest of the country from the looming income tax hikes.

"President Obama is going to get tax rate increases. The president won," Graham tweeted, echoing earlier comments he made on "Fox News Sunday." He told the show that the chances of a bipartisan deal before the New Year's deadline were "exceedingly good."

Obama has alternatively offered Republicans a deal to increase income taxes for households earning over $250,000 a year, and over $400,000 a year.

A White House aide said the president and his staff had been in touch with congressional leaders throughout the weekend.

Any deal on taxes in the Senate might meet resistance in the House from conservative Republicans.

OBAMA JUMPS IN

On NBC, Obama warned of the fallout in financial markets if the two sides did not reach an agreement.

"If people start seeing that on January 1st this problem still hasn't been solved, that we haven't seen the kind of deficit reduction that we could have, had the Republicans been willing to take the deal that I gave them ... then obviously that's going to have an adverse reaction in the markets," Obama said, adding that he had offered Republicans significant compromises that had been rejected repeatedly.

He said he would avoid tax increases for most Americans, even if the talks fall apart.

"If Republicans do in fact decide to block it, so that taxes on middle class families do in fact go up on January 1st, then we'll come back with a new Congress on January 4th and the first bill that will be introduced on the floor will be to cut taxes on middle class families," Obama said.

John Boehner, the speaker of the House of Representatives, rejected Obama's accusations that Republicans were not being amenable to compromise.

"The president's comments today are ironic, as a recurring theme of our negotiations was his unwillingness to agree to anything that would require him to stand up to his own party," Boehner, who has had trouble convincing his Republican colleagues to support his own proposals, said in a statement.

"The president has continued to insist on a package skewed dramatically in favor of higher taxes that would destroy jobs. We've been reasonable and responsible. The president is the one who has never been able to get to ?yes.'"

The Senate - where the Democrats hold sway - began a session beginning at 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT), but it was not clear whether the chamber would have fiscal-cliff legislation to act upon.

The Republican-controlled House also returns on Sunday and can vote on any deal in the evening if need be.

Harlequins 26 London Irish 15

London Irish put up a dogged fight against league leaders Harlequins at Twickenham but ultimately came away with nothing to show for their efforts.

Ian Humphreys kicked five penalties for the Exiles as they matched their opponents for the majority of the game, but a late penalty try sealed their fate.

The teams exchanged penalties in the first-half and went in 6-6 at the break. Quins? Danny Care then went over shortly after the interval, with the video referee required to confirm the decision.

The boot of Humphries ensured Irish remained within touching distance of the score as he kicked a long-range penalty to bring the Exiles back into the game.

However, a penalty try, awarded with just three minutes left after two scrums had to be reset, ensured Conor O?Shea?s men ran out victors.

Irish were not helped either when new signing Pat Phibbs was sin-binned after deliberately knocking the ball out of Care?s hands close to the line.

The result capped a miserable end to 2012 for Brian Smith?s side, who have now extended their losing streak to seven matches in all competitions.

Reflecting on the game, Smith said: ?It?s disappointing because I felt our effort was worthy of something, but we?re big boys and we?ve just got to dust ourselves off and keep fighting.

?We?re happy with the effort, but bitterly disappointed coming up short both in terms of the result and not getting a bonus point.

?But we look at their side and think they?re a bit better along in terms of the development path than we are.

?Certainly up front they were very good but I thought our scrum was a lot more competitive than what they were rewarded for.?

Commenting on Danny Care?s try, Smith added: ?I thought it was touch and go because we had a chance to steal the ball under the posts, so it?s fine margins.

?The effort level was pretty good today, but we?ve got to hold our hands up too. We were probably overshadowed a little up front.

?Our lineout was good all day but in the last two we let ourselves down when we had a chance to claw something back out of the game.

?We?ve got to be brutally honest with ourselves and make sure our reaction to this performance is constructive.?

U.S. plane stuck in Iran for repairs after emergency landing

DUBAI (Reuters) - A small U.S. commercial plane has been stuck in Iran for nearly three weeks after making an emergency landing near the city of Ahvaz, the country's airports director said on Sunday.

The plane was forced to land because of technical problems, Mahmoud Rasoulinejad said, quoted by the Mehr news agency.

"After landing, the crew traveled on to countries around the Persian Gulf and the plane is currently being repaired," he said.

Rasoulinejad did not specify who owned the aircraft, where it was headed or the nationality of the crew members. It would soon be ready to return to the skies, he said.

Ahvaz lies near Iran's border with Iraq in the southwest of Iran, an important area for the country's oil industry.

Earlier this month Iran trumpeted the capture of a compact U.S. intelligence ScanEagle drone in its airspace, which U.S. officials have denied.

In December 2011 Iranian forces announced they had captured a U.S. RQ-170 reconnaissance drone in eastern Iran which had been reported lost by U.S. forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

Melvin Guillard survives Jamie Varner slam but loses UFC 155 bout

Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner staked a late claim to the UFC 155 Fight of the Night bonus with a bout that ended in a split decision. Varner won it on the judges' cards, 30-27, 27-30, 29-28.

Varner gained an edge early in the bout by tagging Guillard in the first round. Guillard showed good kicks, but couldn't escape Varner's takedowns for much of the bout. But the most frightening moment of the bout came late in the third round.

[Complete UFC 155 recap: Cain Velasquez mauls Junior dos Santos]

The two were scrambling on the ground for position when Guillard took Varner's back. Varner stood up, and with Guillard's head pointed to the ground, Varner slammed his opponent to the ground. Amazingly, Guillard was not knocked out or injured from the move. The fight ended seconds after, and the two embraced.

?This was a very emotional fight for both of us," Varner said after the bout. "After what happened a few weeks ago at the "TUF Finale" event, we were both ready to compete. I knew we would eventually get in the Octagon and squash our beef and I definitely feel that we did. I?m happy about my performance, I feel that I was able to dominate the fight wherever we ended up and I?m glad I got the win.?

Varner and Guillard were originally scheduled to fight during "The Ultimate Fighter" finale on Dec. 15, but illness kept Varner from the cage. Guillard was understandably upset about the delay, leading to trash talk.

Nobel scientist Rita Levi-Montalcini dies in Rome at 103

ROME (AP) ? Rita Levi-Montalcini, a biologist who conducted underground research in defiance of Fascist persecution and went on to win a Nobel Prize for helping unlock the mysteries of the cell, died at her home in Rome on Sunday. She was 103 and had worked well into her final years.

Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno, who announced her death in a statement, called it a great loss "for all of humanity." He praised her as someone who represented "civic conscience, culture and the spirit of research of our time."

Italy's so-called "Lady of the Cells," a Jew who lived through anti-Semitic discrimination and the Nazi invasion, became one of her country's leading scientists and shared the Nobel medicine prize in 1986 with American biochemist Stanley Cohen for their groundbreaking research carried out in the United States. Her research increased the understanding of many conditions, including tumors, developmental malformations, and senile dementia.

Italy honored Levi-Montalcini in 2001 by making her a senator-for-life.

A petite woman with upswept white hair, she kept an intensive work schedule well into old age. "At 100, I have a mind that is superior ? thanks to experience ? than when I was 20," she said in 2009.

Levi-Montalcini was born April 22, 1909, to a Jewish family in the northern city of Turin. At age 20 she overcame her father's objections that women should not study and obtained a degree in medicine and surgery from Turin University in 1936.

She studied under top anatomist Giuseppe Levi, whom she often credited for her own success and for that of two fellow students and close friends, Salvador Luria and Renato Dulbecco, who also became separate Nobel Prize winners. Levi and Levi-Montalcini were not related.

After graduating, Levi-Montalcini began working as a research assistant in neurobiology but lost her job in 1938 when Italy's Fascist regime passed laws barring Jews from universities and major professions.

Her family decided to stay in Italy and, as World War II neared, Levi-Montalcini created a makeshift lab in her bedroom where she began studying the development of chicken embryos, which would later lead to her major discovery of mechanisms that regulate growth of cells and organs.

With eggs becoming a rarity due to the war, the young scientist biked around the countryside to buy them from farmers. She was soon joined in her secret research by Levi, her university mentor, who was also Jewish and who became her assistant.

The 1943 German invasion of Italy forced the Levi-Montalcini family to flee to Florence and live underground. After the Allies liberated the city, she worked as a doctor at a center for refugees.

In 1947 Levi-Montalcini was invited to the United States, where she remained for more than 20 years, which she called "the happiest and most productive" of her life. She held dual Italian-U.S. citizenship.

During her research at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, she discovered nerve growth factor, or NGF, the first substance known to regulate the growth of cells. She showed that when tumors from mice were transplanted to chicken embryos they induced rapid growth of the embryonic nervous system. She concluded that the tumor released a nerve growth-promoting factor that affected certain types of cells.

The research increased the understanding of many conditions, including tumors, developmental malformations, and senile dementia. It also led to the discovery by Stanley Cohen of another substance, epidermal growth factor, which stimulates the proliferation of epithelial cells.

The two shared the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1986.

Levi-Montalcini returned to Italy to become the director of the laboratory of cell biology of the National Council of Scientific Research in Rome in 1969.

School cafeterias join fight against childhood obesity | Seattle ...

FoodBy Eric Whitney, Colorado Public Radio

Kathy Del Tonto started cooking school food 30 years ago in the?Montrose?school district at the foot of Colorado?s San Juan Mountains. Back then, the cafeteria workers made everything from scratch.

?My first kitchen that I managed was a little country school out south of town, and we made our own ketchup and everything,? she says.

But times changed. Families started eating more fast food, and processing companies started offering schools fast-food kinds of choices.

The companies would take the food that the U.S. Department of Agriculture gives to schools, turn it into chicken nuggets and other processed items kids want, and then send it to cafeterias ? for less than cooking it on site would cost.

Del Tonto went along with it. ?By doing processed food you can cut your labor because you don?t have to do the hard cooking, or you?re just reheating and that kind of thing,? she explains.

Increasingly, though, the?movement?to reduce childhood obesity by improving what kids eat in school has changed the game. It means schools are now required to serve more fresh fruits and vegetables.

And there?s a movement within the movement that promotes the retro notion of cooking meals from scratch. And that takes a change in the hearts and minds of those behind the lunch line.

Mike Shethar, a chef from Boulder, Colo., wants Del Tonto and all other cafeteria workers onboard. He says with a little training, food staff can cook the food on site.

?I ask them if they cook chicken at home and they?re like, ?Of course I cook chicken at home,? and I say, ?Is it difficult?? ?No, I do it all the time,? ? says Shethar. ?And so I think about transferring the love you give your food at home ? why shouldn?t it be in the schools??

LIveWellDespite the rap that it?s more expensive to cook, Shethar believes it can be done for the same price as having the food processors do it. Shethar travels around Colorado with a group called?LiveWell Colorado, which teaches districts like Del Tonto?s how to switch to more healthful food. Think of it as a boot camp for the lunch lady set.

At first, Del Tonto was not pleased.

?I didn?t like somebody coming in and telling me I was doing it wrong. We were giving kids what they loved. We had huge lunch counts; they were happy. Nobody was complaining,? she says.

That was two years ago. Del Tonto was in charge of food for all 11 schools in her district, and she had them serving processed foods almost exclusively.

But by the end of the school food training, she was a changed woman.

?When I sat there in that classroom and knew the obesity rate had increased 30 percent, when I saw photos of kids and knowing that that generation doesn?t have the life expectancy that their parents [have] ? as a mom, that?s a shock-and-awe moment,? she says. ?I remember thinking in my head, if it?s not me, who?s it gonna be that?s going to take that on? And if not now, when??

Two years later, Del Tonto?s schools have switched from mostly processed foods to making 95 percent of what kids eat from scratch.

But it wasn?t easy. It required training staff members, educating them about healthful eating, and lots of repetition to get the kids to make the more healthful choices.

LocalHealthGuide:?Seattle School meals to feature more fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods

Those challenges, and others, are more than most schools want to take on, says Joe Pawlak, a school?food industry analyst. It takes money, new equipment and retraining cafeteria staff. Del Tonto?s school had?financial help.

Del Tonto remains committed to serving nearly all meals in her schools cooked from scratch. She says lunch ladies feel better serving things they?ve made themselves.

?Just knowing the love and the care we put in that food, hoping that it makes a difference for some of those kids.?

Amazon Is Not A Commerce Company

amazon logoSame-day shipping became the big retailer craze this holiday season. Why? As the New York Times points out, retailers are living in fear of Amazon.com and trying to match what the online retailer offers. The fear factor -- Wal-Mart once had a trance on retail. Now it's Amazon.com. But it's not just retail that has begun to show deeper anxiety about Amazon. Its' the enterprise giants, too, that pay far more attention to the moves Amazon makes. Commerce came first, now Amazon is prepping to have the same impact on big data and the software markets.

CHSJ News: Rplex? Rothesay Looks Into New Rec Centre

Quispamsis has the Qplex, and now Rothesay is looking at creating its own recreational centre.

Mayor Bill Bishop tells CHSJ news there's 2 million dollars in their capital budget for a design study, but that will only be used if Rothesay Council gets enough information on funding and size to go ahead.

Bishop says the rec centre would have a focus on indoor sports, with small rooms for martial arts, an indoor walking track and courts for basketball and volleyball.

2 dead in Moscow airliner crash

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's Interior Ministry says two people have been killed in the crash of a passenger airliner at Moscow's Vnukovo airport.

The plane, a Tupolev-204 twin-engine jet, went off the runway at Russia's third-busiest airport on Saturday afternoon; it broke apart and caught fire.

News reports said about a dozen people were aboard and that several of them were seriously injured. Ministry spokesman Gennady Bogachev said on state news channel Vesti that two people died.

The plane belonged to the Russian airline Red Wings.

Cassini orbiter captures Saturn's swirls

NASA / JPL-Caltech / SSI

Saturn's storm systems swirl in a near-infrared image captured by the Cassini orbiter's camera system on Dec. 24, from a distance of 441,028 miles (709,766 kilometers).

By Alan Boyle

The storms of Saturn ripple through the frame of a black-and-white close-up captured by the Cassini orbiter on Christmas Eve and received on Earth on Wednesday.

"Close-up" is a relative term: When this picture was taken, Cassini was 441,028 miles (709,766 kilometers) away from Saturn, or almost twice the distance between Earth and the moon. Also, "black-and-white" doesn't tell the whole story: The picture was captured through the wide-angle camera's CB2 red filter, which brings out more of the variations in the cloud tops of the planet's atmosphere. For an even more dramatic illustration of the effect, compare the photos accompanying this report about Saturn's north polar vortex.

So what's black and white and red all over? This picture answers the riddle.

For more pictures from Cassini, including a top-10 photo slideshow?and?raw imagery from last weekend's flyby of the Saturnian moon Rhea, check out NASA's Cassini website as well as the online home base for the CICLOPS imaging team. You can also click through these additional stunners from the Cassini mission:

Update for 9:50 p.m. ET: I originally wrote that the CB2 filter was an infrared filter, but NASA says it's just on the edge of the visible-light spectrum, going into the near-infrared, at a wavelength of 751 nm. Good: That makes the riddle even more apt.

Roccat Kone XTD

Although the Roccat Kone XTD ($89.99) is an update of the Roccat Kone[+] Gaming Mouse, the differences between the two are so few and incremental that they can be fraternal twins. With the exception of its more precise 8,200dpi laser sensor and a scroll wheel that can tilt from side to side, the Kone XTD shares an identical feature set with the Roccat Kone[+], and the end result is once again a comfortable, highly customizable gaming mouse loaded with functionality. If you've already got the Kone[+], you should stick with that. But if you're choosing between the two, the Kone XTD is well worth the extra $10.

Design and Features
Measuring 1.6 by 3 by 5.3 inches (HWD), the Kone XTD is a dead ringer for the Roccat Kone[+], as its chassis features molded contours that cradle your thumb and pinky. Coupled with the fact that the Kone XTD's profile isn't low like that of the Razer Taipan, which makes for a very comfortable mouse. Moreover, the Kone XTD's frame is covered with a soft-touch matte finish, which provides a good grip while also preventing smudges and splotches a lot more effectively than, say, the glossy surface seen on the Razer Naga Hex. The Kone XTD's frame weighs 4.3 ounces, and it can be adjusted by inserting one to four of the included five-gram weights in a compartment on its underside.

The top of the Kone XTD features four LEDs housed in two strips that can either cycle through various colors or subtly pulsate with the color of your choosing. Additionally, different color selections can be assigned among the five game profiles that can be stored on the Kone XTD's on-board memory.

In between the standard left- and right- click buttons is the Kone XTD's clickable scroll wheel. While I personally prefer the Corsair Vengeance M60's beefier metallic tracking wheel, the Kone XTD wins when it comes to functionality because it can be tilted to the left and right, which adds the equivalent of two additional buttons to the mix. The scroll wheel is flanked by a button that opens up the Start menu above it and a pair of DPI adjusters beneath it for changing sensitivity on the fly. The upper crest of the thumb cradle, meanwhile features a page forward button and the marquee Easy-Shift [+] button. Holding the latter button while clicking another ?as you would with a shift key - yields an entirely different function to that button. Consequently, users can assign two functions to each button, effectively doubling the number of available functions from 12 to 23 while avoiding the need to cram a smorgasbord of buttons on the surface.

The Kone XTD is a wired mouse that connects via a tangle-resistant braided USB 2.0 cable. There isn't a wireless option, so users who prefer the freedom offered by Bluetooth or a 2.4GHz wireless receiver will have to look elsewhere. That said, wired mice provide a higher level of precision that their wireless counterparts simply can't match, and since precision makes all the difference between winning and losing on the gaming grid, it's an understandable omission.

Lefties, beware: The Kone XTD's frame is designed to be held by right-handed folks, so if you game with a southpaw you'd be better off with an ambidextrously designed mouse, like the Razer Taipan.

Performance
Armed with R3 laser sensor with a maximum DPI of 8,200, the Kone XTD can be tuned to a hyper-sensitive extreme more than most mice, including the Roccat Kone[+] (6,000dpi) and the Vengeance M60 (5,700dpi). As expected, its response rate is incredibly fast?our testing confirmed its advertised polling rate of 1000Hz.

In addition to its precision, the Kone XTD is highly customizable. Once you download the driver from Roccat's site, you'll be met with an avalanche of options that touch on nearly every aspect of the Kone XTD, like selecting LED lighting patterns, assigning functions and macros to each button (and its Easyshift alter-ego), and adjusting dpi sensitivity. Additionally, the software lets you create user profiles, five of which can be stored on the Kone XTD's on-board memory. All said, calling the Kone XTD merely customizable almost seems like an understatement.

One of the reasons we like reviewing gaming mice here at the Labs is that it lets us play games under the guise of testing, and I accordingly headed into a few rounds of Team Fortress 2 armed with the Kone XTD in my holster. The gaming mouse made for a formidable weapon on the gaming grid, where its laser sensor yielded smooth movement on high DPI settings without exhibiting any lag. Moreover, it felt comfortable in my hand throughout, and the Easyshift button's close proximity to my thumb kept it accessible and easy to press.

Ultimately, the Roccat Kone XTD benefits enormously from sharing most of its DNA with the Roccat Kone[+]. By adding a few incremental improvements to an already well-designed, highly customizable gaming mouse, its fate as great choice was sealed from the start. That said, if you've already got the Kone[+], you'll be fine sticking with that. However, if you're starting from a blank slate, the Kone XTD is a great choice.

Lisa Firestone: 5 Achievable Resolutions for a Longer, Happier Life

Resolutions are notorious for falling by the wayside a few months or even days into the New Year. A 2012 University of Scranton study revealed that only 8 percent of people who make New Year's resolutions are successful in achieving them. This low success rate may relate to the fact that many of us are more inclined to center our resolutions on self-criticism than on real aspirations or desires. Rarely do we set a goal to spend more time joking around with friends or listening to music we enjoy. Rather, our resolutions tend to focus on "fixing" our flaws or "correcting" our failures. This negative viewpoint comes from a "critical inner voice" we all possess that alerts us of what we need to fix, while reminding us that we won't succeed. Filtering our personal goals through this critical lens only sets us up for failure. With that in mind, this year, I want to propose a new list of deeply rewarding and reachable resolutions. These activities have been proven to benefit us on every level, increasing both the quality and length of our lives.

Be More Mindful: Mindfulness meditation is an amazing method for learning to live in the moment. We do not exist in the future or in the past, yet many of us spend most of our time worrying about one or the other. By paying attention to the present with purpose and without judgment, we make the most of every minute we have. A 2009 article in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences posed, "Meditation practices have various health benefits including the possibility of preserving cognition and preventing dementia." In addition to potentially sustaining brain functionality, new studies have suggested that mindfulness meditation may slow the rate of cellular aging. The evidence that meditation practices may actually increase our lifespan should give us that extra incentive to take this time for ourselves. The benefits may mean not only more years to enjoy, but more joy in our years. You can learn more about meditation practices and benefits from mindfulness expert Jon Kabat-Zinn here.

Exercise for a Healthy Mind: Staying fit and healthy may have been the fifth most popular resolution in 2012, but the goal of exercising has more rewards than what meets the eye. In 2011, interpersonal neurobiology expert Dr. Daniel Siegel and co-founder of the NeuroLeadership Institute Dr. David Rock developed The Healthy Mind Platter, a regimen that consists of "seven daily essential mental activities to optimize brain matter and create well-being." One of these activities involves "physical time," in which people move their bodies aerobically in order to strengthen the brain. Exercise doesn't just make us stronger physically, but mentally as well. Aerobic exercise has been proven to help fight stress and depression. Keep your mind sharp and your spirits lifted by making it a part of your life.

Sleep the Right Amount for You: While eating right and exercising more are almost always on our agenda, we rarely give sleep the weight it deserves when it comes to our wellness and well-being. According to William C. Dement and Christopher Vaughan, the authors of The Promise of Sleep, "Healthful sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important factor in predicting longevity, more influential than diet, exercise, or heredity." In their book, the authors correlate ignoring sleep with heart disease, traffic accidents, and "immeasurable mental and psychological disadvantages." Additionally, research shows that sleep loss hurts our cognitive performance, while a healthy amount of sleep improves cognition. So while it may not feel intuitive or productive, getting the right dose of rest is something we all should add to our agenda. Learn more about how much sleep you need from the National Sleep Foundation website.

Differentiate From Your Past: The end of the year tends to be a time for reflection. We may start to look at the worst traits we possess or the things we most want to change in ourselves. As we do this, it's important to continuously ask ourselves, "Who do I want to be?" "Whose life am I really living?" "Why do I make the choices I make?" "What actions would I be taking if I were acting based on my real wants and desires?" Without us even knowing it, so many of our behaviors are based on harmful influences from our past. We may imitate influential caregivers, adopting their attitudes or outlook. Or we may act in ways that are reactive to old experiences. Behaviors we adopted as children in response to a negative interpersonal environment can hurt us adults, especially in conditions where these behaviors are no longer adaptive.

For example, if we grew up with people who often let us down, we may be hesitant to trust anyone. If we grew up feeling under pressure and pulled on by our parents, we may feel easily overwhelmed or intruded on. It's important to identify what parts of our personality reflect who we want to be and what parts represent a negative reflection of our past. Once we identify these patterns, we must make a conscious effort to separate from these (often subconscious) influences. Studies have indicated that the more adverse childhood events you experience, the more likely you are to contract disease later in life. Thus, for both physical and mental reasons, it is vital to face the ways we've been hurt in the past and to separate from their still destructive influences in the present. By shedding these imposed layers, we can ultimately unveil who we really are. You can learn more about this process of differentiation at PsychAlive.org.

Challenge Your Inner Critic: To make any of our resolutions a success means challenging our "critical inner voice." This voice will shoot us down when we achieve victory with comments like, "So what if you lost weight? You'll never be able to keep it off." Or it will lure us to act in self-destructive ways, "One cigarette won't hurt you. Who cares what you do anyway? You should just make yourself feel good." This inner critic is formed from negative experiences and attitudes we were exposed to early in life, and it continues to be shaped throughout our growth.

The more we act according to the dictates of our critical inner voice, the louder and stronger it gets, and the more control it has over our life. We can conquer this enemy within by identifying when it is triggered and what it is telling us. By seeing these negative thought processes as an alien point of view, as opposed to a reflection of reality, we are better equipped to counter the directives of our critical inner voice. By continually standing up to and challenging this internal enemy, we become stronger in our ability to live life freely based on our own desires, passions, and goals.

Taking a positive and proactive approach to our goals gives us the best chance of achieving lasting change. As we take on resolutions that will help us to become our best selves, we must treat ourselves with compassion, sensitivity, and respect. We must be brave in our battle to challenge deeply engrained behaviors and steadfast in our journey to live free of imagined limitations.

Tips On How To Develop Your Personal Image - Empower Network

Sometimes it can seem hard to know what it is you need to do for personal development. Personal development, like many fields, is highly individual. The development program that works for one person may be completely different from the one that works for another. You should always continue researching and learning new ways to improve your personal development plan.

Tell other people positive things. When you focus on the good in others, you will find that they return the favor.

TIP! One great personal development goal you can set is to practice being more selfless. You can strengthen your inner character by using self-sacrificing behavior, to help better other people?s lives.

Strive to be the best at whatever it is you do. Use your passions to fuel your journey of personal fulfillment. No one can be perfect at everything, but we all aspire to provide inspiration to others. Do the best you can at what you do, and bask in the pride it will bring you.

Write out a little pep talk for yourself. On a postcard, write down all of your best qualities. Carry it around, and read it when you need to. Make a video of yourself reading it and watch it as often as you need. For what reason?

It is important to treat your body well and listen to its signals. Listen to the signals your body is sending you, such as feelings of hunger or fatigue, and do what is needed in response. By doing that, your body will perform better later on in the future. Ignoring those needs may cause your body to ignore you.

TIP! When thinking about your personal development goals, set what standards you think constitutes the best. You should try your hardest to prioritize what you consider important.

Stress is one of the chief impediments to a happy, satisfying lifestyle. Stress can take both a physical and an emotional toll on your body. To retain clarity of mind and the motivation to work towards our goals, it is critical to banish unnecessary stress from our minds. Find some spare time during the day to be by yourself and to clear out your mind by relaxing. Taking the time to renew your center will help you to find peace within yourself.

Try to make each day more excellent than the previous one. Work towards constant and continuous improvement. Always push yourself to be a little better than yesterday.

Remembering to listen is as important as speaking your mind. This is definitely true concerning self improvement. Always pay attention to what you are telling yourself. To better yourself as a person, you need to listen to yourself.

TIP! Have a special account for emergencies. Without such a fund, you may have to rely on credit cards or high-interest loans to deal with sudden expenses or emergencies.

Pick up a book to find out more about self improvement. These types of reading materials can often provide new insights and give you methods to alter your behavior in lifelong positive ways. Books on the topic of personal development can be poorly written. To avoid this, make sure you read books that have been reviewed well.

It is impossible for you to properly care for the ones you love, unless you take care of yourself first. Wherever you are mentally and emotionally, always take time to relax and check in with your needs.

You are unique, and therefore, you?ll need to adapt different tips to your situation than others will. If you do not apply your knowledge to your life, how can you expect success? Be sure to take this advice and help everybody that you care about with this new knowledge.

Half of Americans leave landline behind

3 hrs.

A new study indicates that fully half of Americans are living in a household that uses only or mostly mobile phones ? but the remainder is slow to convert.

The Centers for Disease Control's?National Health Interview Study conducts in-person interviews throughout the year, asking about everything from health and insurance status to household telephones. They've put together some of the data from the first half of 2012 and the results, while not shocking, are significant.

Of the more than 20,000 households interviewed, just over half used wireless (i.e. cellular) phones for all or nearly all phone?calls ? 35.9 percent were wireless-only, and 15.9 percent had a landline but rarely used it. That adds up to 51.8 percent of all households, which is less than 2?percent more than for?the same period last year.

Why such a small increase? While younger people are adopting wireless phones as their only phone in record numbers, older folks are hanging onto their landlines. The percentage of people going wireless only steadily decreases as age increases: Only a quarter of those aged 45-64 were totally wireless, and just a tenth of those above age 64. That said, every age segment saw their wireless-only population increase by between 1 and 5 percent.

The highest percentage of wireless-only users appears to be among adults living with unrelated adult roommates ? 75.9 percent, almost three times the proportion of people living only with spouses or other adult family (but down slightly from last year's numbers).

So young people in population-dense areas, especially renters and people with low income, are happy to leave behind the expense and inconvenience of a landline. But for people who have had a landline for years, relatively few choose to abandon it.

The rest of the study, including methods and many more statistics, can be found at the CDC's website.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBCNews Digital. His personal website is?coldewey.cc.

Gambling Lobbyists Top Md. List For Spending ? CBS Baltimore

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ? Gambling interests are high up on a list for spending on lobbyists in Maryland this year.

The State Ethics Commission has released a list of employers who spent $50,000 or more between May and Oct. 31.

Buildings Trades for National Harbor Inc., spent about $2.7 million. That?s the most on the list. The group lobbied on legislation to allow a casino in Prince George?s County.
