Samsung Galaxy Camera is an Android Jellybean device with 3G and Wi-Fi

You're looking at the Samsung Galaxy Camera -- a fully fledged 16-megapixel digital snapper that runs Android Jellybean and even has 3G support.

Nope, we're not joking. This is a digital camera that has a more up-to-date version of Android than Samsung's latest smartphones, which still use Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Its 4.8-inch screen has a 1,280x720-pixel resolution and comes close to the Galaxy S III in terms of vibrancy.

The use of Android means the camera can run the same apps as its smartphone equivalent -- from Chrome to Angry Birds and so forth. When we got to test this out on Samsung's stand at IFA we felt it was weirdly satisfying to browse to Wired.co.uk's homepage on the back of a traditional camera, yet there we were, doing just that.

As a camera, we didn't have much chance to test performance, but thanks to the device having Wi-Fi and 3G (or 4G) built in we were able to email one of our cheeky test photos to ourselves (thanks, Samsung!). You can see that in our gallery.

Picture quality
Picture quality is okay, but it's by no means up to Samsung's usual standards for higher-end cameras. Generally pictures were decent enough, but there is clearly visible noise in areas with lower brightness and a hefty amount of chromatic aberration (coloured artefacts around the edges of objects) when viewing the photo at full resolution. We're holding out final opinions on this matter until we get a model to review in a wider range of shooting conditions.

The Galaxy Camera has a large pop-up flash and a 21x optical zoom (things you'll never get on a regular smartphone camera), which extends the f/2.8 21mm wide-angle lens right up to a 480x limit. ISO ranges from 100 up to 3,200, though based on our testing you won't want to go anywhere near 3,200 -- our test shot was captured at ISO 160 with a 1/90 sec exposure on f/4 and had enough noise as it is.

How good is the camera?

The other bonus of having a large screen, Android and 3G is editing and sharing. Want to download Instagram and make your 16-megapixel photos look like they were shot on a camera that cost a tenner? No problem. Prefer to install Adobe Photoshop and fix that chromatic aberration? Easily done here. The OS is actually very responsive thanks to a quad-core 1.4GHz processor, which should also mean editing 1080p videos on the Galaxy will be a breeze. It takes microSIM cards for its 3G connectivity and microSD for storing photos and videos.

Note that you can't use the Galaxy as a phone. You can, however, connect up a Bluetooth headset and use something like Skype.

It's easy to see why Samsung decided to make a camera that ran Android. What's less clear is who will want to buy it. We'll be very curious to see how this one is marketed. Are you tempted? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Eating less fails to extend monkey lives

Who wants to live forever? Apparently, some humans do ? and many think eating less could help. But hungry monkeys who died at a normal age have cast doubt on the power of calorie restriction.

Laboratory animals on sparse diets enjoy impressive increases in lifespan, with calorie-controlled mice living up to 50 per cent longer than average. In 1987, a study began into the effects of calorie restriction on rhesus monkeys. The idea was to test if larger animals can reap the same benefits from eating less. If they can, it is possible humans can too.

"Now that the monkeys are reaching their maximal lifespan, we can start looking at the effects of calorie restriction on longevity," says Rafael de Cabo, who, along with his colleagues, inherited the long-running study at the National Institute of Aging (NIA) in Bethesda, Maryland.

The team's latest results show that monkeys eating 30 per cent less than control animals did not have longer lives. Dieting monkeys also died from age-related diseases just as often as controls.

The results not only conflict with findings from worms, flies, rats and mice, but also with those of a very similar study of rhesus monkeys at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, published in 2009.

Differing methodologies

Richard Weindruch, the lead author on the 2009 study, attributes the inconsistent results to differences in methodology. He says the higher-quality and slightly restricted diet of the NIA control monkeys meant they were already living longer than expected. By contrast, the monkeys in Weindruch's study were fed a refined diet high in fat and sucrose, more similar to a Western diet.

Janko Nikolich-Zugich at the University of Arizona in Tuscon, who was not involved in either study, is not surprised by the conflicting results. He noted that they are in keeping with previous tests, which show that the effects of calorie restriction vary with sex, genetics and environmental conditions.

Luigi Fontana at the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri, was not involved in either report. He believes both studies should have paid more attention to dietary composition.

"Fifteen per cent of the monkey diet came from protein ? that's too much," he says. "Our work suggests lowering protein, rather than calories, may be the key to increasing longevity ? so reducing protein intake could have led to better results."

De Campo agrees that dietary composition might play a role in lengthening life, but claims the benefits of calorie restriction are still strong. "Although we don't have the same lifespan findings as the Wisconsin group, what's really important is that we did show similar improvements in health," he says.

The Michigan Wolverines have reclaimed their confidence, something Alabama did shortly after Nick Saban landed in Tuscaloosa and started winning national titles.

The eighth-ranked Wolverines have already earned some preseason acclaim going into Saturday night's opening showdown with the similarly pedigreed and second-ranked Crimson Tide at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Beating a team that has won two of the last three national championships from a league that has captured six in a row would be an especially huge statement for Denard Robinson & Co.

"They're just trying to show the world that they can play," Alabama safety Robert Lester said. "The SEC is such a dominant conference, and I guess just to get any credibility points, you have to go and beat a credible SEC team. They're just trying to prove themselves."

Saban and the Tide have some things to prove, too, even as nearly two-touchdown favorites.

The nation's best defense a year ago gets quite a test for seven new starters facing the dangerous Robinson, the kind of double-edged weapon Alabama hasn't seen since Cam Newton two years ago.

This game could do much to support Saban's contention that there's no sense of entitlement with this team, unlike the talent-laden 2010 group that dropped three games after a championship season.

"If this team is not successful it is not because of the character and attitude of the team," said Saban, who is 18-6 against ranked opponents and 10-4 against Top 10 teams over the last four seasons. "It will be because of the lack of experience the team has in certain positions, and they may make too many mistakes to win. It will not get compared that way, I am sure, because this team has done everything the right way."

So one storied program wants to prove it's back, the other that it isn't going anywhere.

Alabama has been ranked for 65 weeks and counting, the nation's longest active streak. Michigan was unranked going into coach Brady Hoke's first season before going on to win 11 games and beat Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl.

This is the first time Alabama and Michigan have met in the regular season.

The Wolverines would love to make a statement for the Big Ten, besieged by Penn State's sex abuse scandal and encumbered by Ohio State's bowl ban. Both teams will get some quick answers about where they stand.

"I went back and thought about last year at this time," Hoke said. "I didn't know if we were going to win two games let alone 11, because you don't know until you get in the real deal as far as playing games.

"Honestly, we'll find out. We'll find out about ourselves."

About 32 hours before kickoff, Hoke announced he was suspending starting running back Fitzgerald Toussaint and reserve defensive end Frank Clark for the game. Toussaint pleaded guilty Tuesday to drunken driving. Clark is accused of taking a laptop from a dorm room.

The Wolverines will likely use running backs Thomas Rawls, Vincent Smith, Justice Hayes perhaps along with newcomers Dennis Norfleet and Drake Johnson against the Crimson Tide.

Without Toussaint, there's an even bigger burden on Robinson to try to outrun or outwit Saban's defenders, who are seldom caught out of position.

Saban said Robinson has improved as a pocket passer. He has warned his pass rushers of what can happen if they leave their feet while approaching him.

"Well, this guy will ball fake you like Michael Jordan and take off running and you'll say, 'Well, how did that happen?'" Saban said.

The swift Robinson can make teams pay for mistakes, as evidenced by his 30 carries of 20-plus yards.

"He's fast. You see that on ESPN watching the Top 10 (plays) week in and week out," Alabama defensive end Damion Square said. "He's a guy that players know of. He has an exceptional arm. He makes throws that need to be made for his team and he extends plays and makes big plays a lot. That's what you want to come and stop ? big plays."

Alabama counters with the more traditional passer AJ McCarron, offensive MVP of the BCS championship game.

Tailback Eddie Lacy also makes his starting debut in place of Heisman Trophy finalist Trent Richardson. He has plenty of help, though, from big-play threats Dee Hart and T.J. Yeldon along with a veteran offensive line.

Michigan linebacker Kenny Demens doesn't think there's any room for error against Alabama.

"Zero. They're a great team. They're disciplined," Demens said. "Any mistake can cost us the game."

The Wolverines don't seem bothered by the fact that Alabama is so heavily favored.

"The game is played on the field," cornerback J.T. Floyd said.

Asked if he likes Michigan's chances, he invoked the three-word catchphrase that has caught on since Hoke's arrival.

"This is Michigan," he said.

Vancouver, BC, August 30, 2012--(T-Net)--AXYS Technologies Inc. (AXYS) recently delivered an Ocean Sentinel buoy and TRIAXYS? buoy to the Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center, or NNMREC, at Oregon State University.?This equipment is part of a mobile wave energy test facility that will be used by academic researchers and device developers to test wave energy technologies that will measure wave resources and assist in the study the energy output and other environmental issues.

?The Ocean Sentinel will provide a standardized, accurate system to compare various wave energy technologies, including systems that may be better for one type of wave situation or another,??said?Sean Moran,?ocean test facilities manager with NNMREC.

?We have to find out more about which technologies work best, in what conditions, and what environmental impacts there may be,??Moran?said.??We're not assuming anything. We're first trying to answer the question, ?Is this a good idea or not?' And if some technology doesn't work as well, we want to find that out quickly, and cheaply, and the Ocean Sentinel will help us do that.?

The delivery of the Ocean Sentinel represents a milestone achievement by AXYS in the development of an advanced power and control monitoring buoy.?AXYS engineers worked with NNMREC staff to develop this custom buoy system that interfaces with numerous custom control and monitoring devices, as well as basic meteorological and oceanographic parameters. They system also provides, real time communications that monitors all aspects of the system performance.

The Ocean Sentinel platform is based on a proven NOMAD 6m hull design with 4 large watertight compartments able to withstand the most severe oceanic weather.?The base design allows for a high degree of flexibility and expansion capacity in system architecture and to allow incorporation of a variety of hybrid power solutions.?Data from the buoys are collected by AXYS' proprietary onboard WatchMan500? data acquisition system and transmitted to a shore station by satellite and cell phone telemetry. In addition, this buoy also has an?Automatic Information System (AIS) transmitter which transmits buoy position and environmental data to passing ships. Authorized users can access buoy status and environmental data from their remotely located base station. The AXYS' Data Management System (DMS)?permits remote control and configuration for the entire buoy network, down to the individual sensor.?The AXYS TRIAXYS? directional wave buoy will be deployed separately from the Ocean Sentinel and will provide precision wave measurements to quantify the wave resources in the test facility local.??AXYS also designed and provided a custom 3 point mooring and deployment procedures for the Ocean Sentinel.

In late July, AXYS technicians and engineers provided NNMREC personnel with the initial dockside system commissioning and training.???On August 19, 2012 NNMREC personnel successfully deployed the Ocean Sentinel.

NNMREC will operate the facility which is a one-square-mile site located about two miles northwest of Yaquina Head Oregon in open Pacific Northwest Waters.

Workers occupy Italy mine in closure protest

Some of the 100 Sardinian miners armed with explosives barricaded themselves nearly 400 meters underground in Italy's only coal mine, Monday.

The miners laugh at the sight of worried journalists, who are used to elevators stopping on the ground floor. This one, instead, is descending about 400 yards underground, to the site of the last coal mine in Italy.

The gate opens to an underworld where conditions are almost unbearable. It's hot and humid, and it doesn't take long before we chew on the bitter taste of coal dust.

Just a few miles away, thousands of tourists sunbathe on the Italian island?s pristine beaches, but the miners' skin has been darkened by ash and soot. They joke that they are the only Sardinians who got a tan in the dark.

The mine looks like hell, but to the miners, this is a second home.

Some have been working in these mines for decades, much like their fathers and grandfathers before them. In this impoverished region, there's no other option. The coal mines have given work to generations of migrants from all over Italy since the 1930s. No wonder the biggest town in the area is called Carbonia.

Now, the company running the mine is planning to take the carbon out of Carbonia.

Coal is now considered outdated and unprofitable, and it is rumored that the mine could close by the end of the year.

The miners' reaction was quick and simple: if you want to kick us out, we won?t come up to the surface.

Union spokesman Stefano Meletti is being helped by fellow miners after having slashed one of his wrists during a press conference of 100 Sardinian striking miners barricaded inside a coal mine in Sardinia, Italy, on Aug. 29, 2012.

At least 30 workers have been occupying the mine as they await reassurances that they can keep their jobs, and the other 417 are taking turns to show their support. Living conditions in the mine are hard, they say, but they?d rather live in the familiar darkness than try to look for other jobs.

Lorenzo Congia is on his fourth consecutive day underground. He says he has no options but to cling to the only job available to him: ?We will stay here until we have the certainty that we can bring the bread back home to our families. We work underground to feed our families. Outside of this mine, we are doomed,? he said.

His colleague, Andrea Pinna, agrees: ?Our children are all unemployed and with no job prospects. If this mine closes, we won?t have anywhere to go. There?s nothing out there for us.??

On Wednesday, another miner, Stefano Meletti, slashed his wrists in front of television cameras shouting: ?Is this what we have to do?? before he was wrestled to the floor by his startled colleagues. While they didn?t expect his sudden act of desperation, they say they, too, are ready to resort to ?extreme measures? to keep their jobs.

They put up a white sheet with a warning, written in red letters in the Sardinian dialect: ?This is the time for gunpowder." And the threat might not be entirely metaphorical.

A few feet away from where they are stationed, an iron gate is plastered with yellow warning signs. That?s the storage room for almost 1,600 pounds of explosives, and more than a thousand detonators. They are there for mining purposes, but authorities fear that in the hands of miners who pledged to fight for their cause to the bitter end, the explosives could turn into a dangerous weapon.

Union leader Gianfranco Sau says the miners don?t want to resort to violence, but he is finding it hard to restrain them.

?It?s difficult to retrain 447 workers. We keep guard of the explosives day and night, we don?t want an exasperated worker to do something crazy," Sau said.

A miners' delegation will meet government representatives in Rome on Friday to try to give the mine a new lease on life as a storage site for carbon dioxide in order to mitigate global warming and produce clean energy.

The miners are hoping for some good news. In the permanent darkness, any ray of light will do.?
