Anav Silverman: Winston Churchill's Granddaughter on Art and Israel

On a recent visit to Israel, legendary sculptress, Edwina Sandys, toured the country looking for an appropriate location for her next project, called Circle, a monumental sculpture which celebrates the advancement of women. It will be Sandys' first sculpture to stand in Israel.

Sandys planned sculpture for Israel contains a larger commentary on the status of women worldwide. Her monumental sculpture will entail a circle of upright stones, in black and white, cast in the shapes of women, connected by a lintel across the top.

In an exclusive interview, Sandys explained that Israel is one of the most suitable places in the world for such a sculpture. "Israel is at the forefront of women being treated equally, relative to other areas of the world."

"There are shining examples of women advancing here, if you look at the army, politics -- former Prime Minister Golda Meir. The responsibilities that women have here are impressive. I look at Israel as a forward, progressive country which has done much in the advancement of women's rights in all stations of life," notes Sandys.

During her trip, Sandys met with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who she says was "very pleased with her project."

"The Prime Minister knew a lot about my grandfather. He's read all the books about Winston Churchill -- I'll have to find a book that he [Netanyahu] hasn't yet read about him," she adds jokingly.

"One particular sculpture that the Prime Minister liked of mine was my War and Peace sculpture, which portrays a jet fighter plane with the shape of a dove cut out inside. It's an allegorical piece that explores the concepts of strength and peace."

Born in 1938, Edwina grew up in the post-World War II era in London. "My grandfather [Winston Churchill] was the first artist I knew," she explains. "As a young girl, I used to watch grandfather paint and I liked watching him make his magic on the canvas."

"But Grandad never thought of himself as an artist, as he was so busy doing other things."

Sandys has been creating art that has reached the wider public for the past 30 years, much of which explores the human state in family, society and world affairs. Her work can be seen in UN centers located in Vienna, Geneva, and New York, as well as the Brooklyn Museum of Art and New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

Her internationally acclaimed work encompasses a wide range of political and social themes. In 1989, Sandys used 32 feet of dismantled sections of the Berlin Wall to create a sculpture called Breakthrough, which is permanently sited at Westminister College in Fulton, Missouri, the site where Winston Churchill, her grandfather, gave his historic "Iron Curtain" speech.

For Edwina, becoming an artist wasn't something she initially dreamed of doing as a child. "I became a wife at a young age and then a mother. Later on, I realized I wanted to do something more than tend the house. I started writing, but then discovered that painting was easier than writing. I got into sculpture sometime later, which I found required a lot more thinking and organization."

Today Sandys lives in Soho, New York with her American husband. In addition to sculpting, she also enjoys painting and planting flowers. One of the highlights of the trip for Sandys was viewing the horticulture and visiting the beautiful parks in Israel.

"So much has changed here since I last visited in 1968. It's been amazing to see how much Israel has developed as a country, to see so much growth and vegetation with so little water." said Sandys. During her visit, Sandys visited the Dead Sea, Mitzpe Ramon and the Be'er Sheva.

Although Sandys' work is often inspired by political and social themes, she says that much of it is also personal, reflecting her own journey and that of the world during her lifetime. "'As an artist, I am still trying to fulfill my own potential."

Ban cites Blue Line violations by Israel, Lebanon

BEIRUT: Ban Ki-moon?s latest report on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 highlights the increase in cross-border tension between Lebanon and Syria, according to an advance copy obtained by The Daily Star.

The 25-page report by the United Nations secretary-general -- the complete version of which can be found here: http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Politics/2012/Jun-30/178859-19th-report-of-un-chief-on-the-implementation-of-security-council-resolution-1701.ashx#axzz1zAFwONT3? -- cites a number of incidents of tension in south Lebanon, but adds that the ?cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon continued to hold, and cautious calm prevailed in the UNIFIL area of operations.?

It notes that several ?Palestinian commemoration? events in March, May and June passed peacefully, after deadly incidents in recent years.

The report blames the Israeli army for continued violations of Lebanese sovereignty, including the occupation of part of the village of Ghajar, while citing a ?noticeable increase in ground violations of the Blue Line? by Lebanese civilians, some of which were by shepherds in the area.

Ban said UNIFIL-led liaison efforts managed to contain the tension.

The report says the U.N. was unable to verify Israeli accusations of arms transfers to Hezbollah across the Lebanese-Syrian border, but mentions ?substantiated? information of arms-trafficking from Lebanon to Syria.

It cites two incidents, foiled by the Lebanese authorities, of weapons shipments destined for Syrian rebels.

Ban called for a ?comprehensive strategy for the management of Lebanon?s land borders,? which has yet to be endorsed by Beirut.

During the period of the report, ?no steps? were taken by Syria or Lebanon toward implementing the Security Council resolution on delineating their common border.

Resolution 1701 was issued at the conclusion of Israel?s July 2006 war against Lebanon. Ban?s report said Lebanon and Israel remain committed to the resolution, while being ?unable to make further progress on the implementation of their respective outstanding obligations.? The report cites no progress on the disputed Shebaa Farms region or Israel?s promised withdrawal from Ghajar.

Congress poised to act on highways, student loans

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, joined by other House GOP leaders, meets with reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, June 27, 2012, following a political strategy session. Boehner defended the contempt of Congress vote against Attorney General Eric Holder, commented on the looming Supreme Court decision on the health care, and updated progress on student loans and the transportation bill. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)After being derided as a "do-nothing" Congress, the House and Senate were poised to vote on a massive legislative package that overhauls highway and transit programs, salvages an estimated 3 million jobs and spares millions of students from higher interest rates on college loans.

Luxury Real Estate Marketing Tip: Keep Your Message Brief - Real ...

As a luxury real estate marketing professional it is important to communicate who you are and what you do with words and imagery. Your collateral materials and web site should articulate the essence of your brand in a nanosecond.

We often attribute the quote of ?A picture is worth a 1000 words? to Confucius. However, research shows that this attribution to Confucius was given by an advertiser named Fred Barnard who said he called it a Chinese proverb, so that people would take it seriously?. As time went on, Confucius was credited with this adage. Mr. Barnard promoted the use of images on the sides of streetcars as part of an advertisement. His sentence was ?One Look is Worth a Thousand Words (1921 trade journal, Printer?s Ink.) In another ad in 1927, Mr. Barnard used the phrase, ?One Picture is Worth Ten Thousand Words?

More research reveals that in the novel Fathers and Sons written in 1862, the Russian writer Ivan Turgenev wrote, ?A picture shows me at a glance what it takes dozens of pages of a book to expound.?

Here is an example of a picture is worth a thousand words. The entrance to the small 6 acre Dog and Oyster Vineyard in Virginia is flanked by two corkscrew sculptures each measuring 40 feet. There are no signs needed to express what is happening here.

So keep your message brief, your pictures bright and expressive so you don?t need 1000 or 10,000 words to say it.

Consulting SEO Web Design Services To ... - SEO Online Marketing

Posted in June 27, 2012 ? 10:47 amh.

SEO web design services are frequently needed so that a company can increase its presence on the internet. Today only high-quality and related results are delivered to users because search engines have advanced their technology which allows them to look through millions of webpages in a short amount of time. Because many businesses have utilized the proper strategies in the designs of their sites, they are not able to have their websites show up on a search engine at all. The relevance of the site, quality of the information on the page, and the number of guests that a site gets are all factors that a search engine looks for when determining rank.

When a user inputs a search into the search box, the relevance of a site refers to how closely related a site is to the query. SEO web design services work to get a site positioned higher on the search engine results page by using keywords in the content of the site. The terms that a person is searching for refers to the keywords. You will want your company to be linked to certain keywords so that when a person searches for that term your site will show up as a result. Relevance can also refer to location, and you want to make sure that the people in your immediate area are seeing your site.

In order to be sure that your business and site are credible and that you are being featured on search engine results pages, you need to be sure that you have high quality information on your site. Customers will abandon your site and go elsewhere if there is incomplete information on your site or it has a poor presentation. Your company?s webpage is likely the primary place that a lot of potential customers will go even if most of your business is conducted online.

Many sites will have a higher ranking on a search engine on account of number of site visitors that they get. In order to improve the number of site visitors you will also need to use appropriate search engine optimization strategies in your site design. Once you have mastered the two above factors you will see that the number of visitors to your webpage will increase.

You should get web design quotes for several different SEO web design services. The company that you choose should fit within your budget, but they should also be credible and have the ability to supply everything that you?re asking for. The site for your company needs to be relevant and have a high quality design. If the company offers what they promise, then you should notice an increase in your site ranking, web traffic, and number of customers.

You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0 feed. You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

Home swapping is fun and frugal! | Go Gingham | Stylishly Frugal ...

Today?s guest post is by Shelley Miller, Home Exchange Expert.? Shelley has done many home exchanges and she and I both agree that home swapping makes travel affordable for families.? Shelley has lots of great tips about travel so please check out her site.

Your next vacation could be a home exchange and these 3 practical alternatives make it possible.? Did you realize that there are three ways to save money when you home exchange?? My family has experienced each of them and they all have benefits. Read on to find out which one works best for you.

1.? Simultaneous Home Exchange:? This form of exchange is when you swap houses with your exchange partner on identical travel dates. The home exchange is ?simultaneous? and straightforward. Sometimes you meet your visitors, sometimes you don?t. It?s up to you. One time we did an exchange with a Seattle family; they flew south down the coast to San Diego and we flew north. We literally passed in the air!

image

Simultaneous home exchange in Windsor, England ? This was the humble abode of my family?s very first home exchange. The mansion was built in 1485!

Bottom line: Choose this one if you like privacy, want your own space, can figure out a new state or country on your own and enjoy being independent.

2.? Non-Simultaneous Home Exchange:? Not all home exchangers swap their homes at the same time. In home exchange lingo, it?s referred to as a ?non-simultaneous? exchange. As the term implies, you live in each others? homes on different dates.

For example, a few years ago my family wanted to do a home exchange over the Christmas season with an American expat family living in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong family had already scheduled a holiday in Thailand, so their house was empty and available during the last two weeks of December.

I e-mailed the homeowner about the idea of a non-simultaneous exchange. She told me they wanted to visit to San Diego the following summer. So that?s what we did. My family visited their 3-story home overlooking the South China Sea in December 2006; their family visited our home overlooking the San Diego Bay in July 2007. Everybody got what they wanted!

Non-simultaneous home swap

View of the South China Sea ? Our Non-Simultaneous home swap in Hong Kong included a car swap, a Mercedes. A 3-story home AND a Mercedes. Sometimes life is really, really good.

Bottom line: This option works well if you?re eager to book an exchange in a particular city. It can be a scheduling challenge to move out of your home six months or a year later when payback time arrives, but perhaps it?s no big deal if you?re planning another trip anyway. If you want to vacation in a city with uber expensive hotel rooms, for example expect to pay about $335 per night in Paris, a non-simultaneous exchange would definitely be worth it.

3.? Hospitality Home Exchange:? This is when you stay in a member?s home while they are living there too. Sometime later, you return the favor and host them in your home.

I?ll admit, when I first heard about a ?hospitality? exchange, it seemed a bit strange. But after trying it a couple times, I found there are clear advantages. Your home swap partners can show you around their community and answer questions. You really feel like a local!

When we did a hospitality exchange in Germany, our hostess Monika baked us a delicious apricot cake; she delivered it to the 2-bedroom apartment they provided to us on the second floor of their home. Monika?s husband, Gerhard, was always helpful with mapping out our day trips.

Home swapping hospitality exchange

Prosciutto & Melon Salad Appetizer ? Monkia, our hospitality exchange partner in Germany, prepared a fabulous welcome meal for us.

Bottom line: Hospitality exchange is a good choice if you like getting to know your exchange partners and meeting their friends too. Before finalizing the exchange, be sure you understand the layout of the home so that you and your travel partners are comfortable with the living arrangement. Good communication leads to realistic expectations. This option is particularly beneficial if you?re traveling solo.

So there you have it, three home exchange choices: simultaneous, non-simultaneous and hospitality. All are good options.

Which home swapping method do you want to try first?

Fruitful matchmaking: Baltic Business Arena is a stepstone to new ...

- I wish there would be more events like this. Especially in the field of clean tech, says Andrzej Kr?l, CEO in Nordpolhaus, one of the SME?s and trade organisations represented at BBA 2012.

It is the first time that SME?s had the opportunity to book face-to-face meetings with other companies at a BDF Summit, but not the last, hopes Andrzej Kr?l. His Krakow-based company is currently exporting its wood frame houses mainly to Norway. He hopes BBA will prove a shortcut to other markets.

?

Perfect mix

The Polish CEO just finished a meeting with Mikael H?kansson from the non-profit organisation European Minds ? a meeting that might prove fruitful Mr. H?kansson says. His office is currently involved in a mining project in Northern Sweden that requires construction of housing for a total 12.000 mine workers.

European Minds is a consulting company offering support in developing EU strategies, EU applications, transnational projects and partnerships.
- We are here to broaden our network to include more first of all authorities but also companies in the Baltic Sea Region, Mikael H?kansson explains.

While he is focusing on the Baltic Business Arena some of his colleagues are covering the political sessions and workshops at the summit. For Mikael H?kansson the whole event constitutes the perfect mix of politics and business.

Business and regional development

Dorota Isajuk also represents a non-profit organisation. She is advisor in the BISNEP (Business and Innovation Support for North-East Poland), addressing the challenges faced by SME?s in the Bia?ystok region in North-West Poland. The Bia?ystok region is one of the poorest regions in Poland and Ms. Isajuk sees events as BBA as a means of boosting economic growth in the region by providing local companies with partners and customers in the Baltic Sea Region.

At BBA Dorota Isajuk has set up meetings with other non-profit organisations, but also companies. She attends networking conferences regularly but is impressed by the BBA event and Swedish innovation company ALMI handling the logistics at Baltic Business Arena.

Stepstone

Artis Treimanis is impressed too. The 21-year-old entrepreneur is representing the small Latvian enterprise Svecu Darbnica specializing in candle making kits.
- I had really good meetings at the Business Arena and a lot of new ideas, Tremanis says.
It is the first time he is attending a matchmaking event and he hopes Baltic Business Arena can become a stepstone on the five employee Ventspils-based company?s road to the Scandinavian markets.
- I guess I represent the smallest company at the business arena. This year, Artis Treimanis emphasizes with an optimistic smile.

?

?

?

BBA 2012 was set up on the initiative of Swedish Agency of Economic and Regional Growth (Tillv?xtverket) which is also main sponsor of the event and strategic partner of BDF. The Agency has asked ALMI (Swedish business development organization) and BDF to arrange BBA 2012. Co-sponsors were Enterprise Europe Network, Swedish Institute and BDF.

Activities of BBA 2012 were:

  • Business-to-business meetings
  • Brief thematic seminars presenting topics related to everyday business conditions.

Most participants were SME?s but also business development organizations, legal advisers, innovation agents etc. They came from eight BSR countries: Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden.

The first BBA was set up in Stockholm in 2011 when 70 companies from 11 countries performed over 350 meetings.

Karin Hallerby, Head of Dept. at Swedish Agency of Economic and Regional Growth (Tillv?xtverket): ?The Baltic Sea Region offers attractive market opportunities for many SME?s. A developed cooperation between SME?s will further strenghten the competitiveness of the region?

?The Baltic Sea Region is performing well in Europe regarding growth and competitiveness?, adds BDF Chairman Hans Skov Christensen. ?Our business structure is dominated by SME?s and dynamic entrepreneurs. Their engagement in establishing new contacts and business opportunities across the Baltic Sea is crucial for the further development of our region?, he emphasizes.

?The best way to exploit and develop cooperation opportunities is to establish personal contacts. In a globalized, digitalized world we are still dependent on personal contacts to take the first step?.

?Especially within green growth this region has global top competences, not least due to traditions of public-private cooperation. BDF is established to facilitate such co-operations? says Torben Aaberg, Head of Public Affairs and BDF?s coordinator of BBA 2012. ?This year we have been very pleased with the close cooperation with ALMI and Tillv?xtverket, the latter being one of our most important Swedish partners. We hope that we together can continue and further develop Baltic Business Arena as an annual event?.

  • BBA 2012 was initiated ? and mainly sponsored by ? Swedish Agency of Economic and Regional Growth (Tillv?xtverket) and arranged by ALMI and BDF. Co-sponsors: Enterprise Europe Network, Swedish Institute and BDF.

New York City mayor proposes creating an internet wall of shame for bad drivers

Mayor Mike Bloomberg is struggling to find a use for red light cameras that are unable to issue violations

By now, all of us know the pain of buying a technology that almost immediately became obsolete. That's precisely the position?New York City finds itself in: After installing 40?red light cameras to help catch traffic violators, state legislators recently ruled that the city can't use them to issue fines to violators. So, in an attempt to make lemonade from its 40 digital lemons, New York City's Mayor Michael Bloomberg is proposing the city use the cameras to create an internet wall of shame showing the names and photos of speeders.

Despite the fact that New York can't use the cameras to issue fines, there's no law that says the city can't use the cameras other ways. "We'll put up their names and pictures someplace,?maybe we can shame them," the mayor said. "We should look at that."

This red light camera snafu is far from the only controversy Bloomberg has found himself in lately. Earlier this month, the mayor proposed?banning the sale of larger sizes of sugary soft drinks, a move that was widely?mocked by the national media.

Fifty Shades of Grey Sparks Rise in S&M, Bondage, Rope Sales

Fifty Shades of Grey is a must-read for women everywhere. Apparently, the EL James novel is also making S&M and bondage gear a must-buy for some.

The buzzed-about book has left unassuming New York women so feverish, they’re snapping up the tools and toys that the hunky Christian Grey favors.

They’re even slipping into stores and asking for bondage material - the very type of natural-filament rope used in the trilogy - the New York Post reports.

50 Shades Cover

“Oh, we’ve been selling rope to women,” says Clifton Kahn, owner of Lexington Hardware on the Upper East Side. “I’d say tenfold more rope than usual."

"The women are definitely buying, and it’s still continuing.”

Apparently tying someone up isn't expensive. The store’s most popular item is soft-cotton “clothes line” rope, which retails at a bargain $5 for 50 feet.

Tarzian Hardware in Park Slope, Brooklyn, has also seen the trend.

“It’s usually men buying rope, but the women, they’ve been coming in the last few months,” a manager told the newspaper. “I’ve actually read the book. So when the women buy rope, it was kind of like, ‘Hmmm, that does seem unusual.’”

While New Yorkers act out their fantasies, casting the movie roles of Christian and Anastasia has become an online fantasy game of sorts this spring.

Some stars, such as Ian Somerhalder, have expressed interest in the film themselves. Who can you see as the two leads? Vote in our polls below!

Who should play Christian?

Who should play Ana?

Cablevision launches iOS app to track down Optimum WiFi hotspots, keep you off the 3G sauce

Some internet purveyors make a big fuss over having public WiFi. It's not often that they go out of their way to help you find that WiFi, however, and that's where CableVision's recently posted (but just now official) Optimum WiFi Hotspot Finder comes in. If you're one of the cable company's Optimum Online subscribers, the currently iOS-only app will pinpoint the 35,000 access points that you can call a home away from home. As we'd hope, the app both finds hotspots nearby for an immediate fix or drills down to specific hotspots if you're just that determined to find a restaurant with a data pipe. The app and WiFi access are both free -- apart from that small matter of the cable account, of course -- and will no doubt help iPad and iPhone owners for whom Optimum WiFi's 15Mbps speed is an oasis in a sea of pokey 3G.

Scoople: Gaming the news to get your data ? Nieman Journalism Lab

Polling station

Scoople is a polling company that acts like a media aggregator but operates as a game. But you wouldn?t necessarily know that if you?ve been spending time with the newish app, which gives users points for answering questions about news stories, and predicting other users? answers.

Here?s how it works: Scoople uses a ?content engine? to aggregate from a variety of sources and produce a single story. The machine tracks some 200 RSS feeds, but a story is often a partial mash-up of just two articles, which Scoople cites with links to the originals. Scoople publishes content by category in channels like Celebrity, Film, Politics, Tech, World, Gaming, and so on. Part-time editorial staffers come up with questions that go with each story.

So, let?s say it?s a piece about the Philadelphia Eagles.

The question might be: Will Philly ever win a Super Bowl? [No. ?Ed.] If I?m a Scoople user, I answer the question (2013 all the way!) then guess whether most other readers answered the same way. Questions remain open for a period of hours, and collective answers are revealed after the time expires. (Here?s an example from the Scoople blog.)

As players accrue points, they work their way up the Scoople leaderboard. The company also has launched a virtual store where players can spend ?Scoople bucks? they earn by playing. For now, they can use bucks to decorate their profile pages. That could lead to a system where bucks could be redeemed and used for subscriptions to online news sites, according to Alain Mayer, co-founder and CEO of Dygest, the company that made Scoople.

Scoople screen shot

I asked Mayer if he feels compelled to give back to news organizations that produce the content Scoople aggregates. Does he feel like he owes them something? Not really. Mayer calls the dynamic ?a give and take,? saying that Scoople is careful to lift only small sections from each story, and that the game actually drives up traffic to the news sites by linking to the original content. Scoople isn?t a media company but rather a ?social network around news,? he says.

?Foursquare is a social network around location, a social experience around location,? Mayer said. ?In very similar ways, we have created a social experience around media content? They?re not building a fantasy farm. It?s very well-grounded in daily news, daily events that they already think about.?

Like other social networks, Scoople sees potential value in the information that people share about themselves. Instead of paying money to participate, players dole out opinions and demographic data that can then be mined. In other words: Scoople provides a game-like experience, but that doesn?t actually make it a game. At its core, Scoople is actually a polling company, or at least that?s what Mayer intends for it.

?Not only do we have demographics,?we have the opnion profile,? Mayer said. ?So as we grow the user base, and as we grow over time, we grow the opinion profile. We can make very interesting correlations. That?s going to be the core of the company as we move forward; the data.?

Mayer won?t get specific about the number of people playing, but he says Scoople has collected ?well over a quarter-million opinions,? with the average user?s opinion profile consisting of 50 responses. For now, the company is sharing some of the data it?s gathering on its website. Down the road, the idea is to charge third parties for access to that data.

Mayer says he could also introduce sponsored questions for another revenue stream. The example he gives is that Nike might want to ask Scoople players who spend a lot of time reading the sports channel about their sneaker style preferences. (It seems like a strategy that could also encourage advocacy-oriented questions. For example, a political campaign could sponsor a question that casts its candidate in a positive light and have that question appear after a story that raises questions about his or her opponent.)

An exchange of personal data is already at the heart of social networks like Facebook, and that makes plenty of people uneasy. But collecting user data also represents revenue opportunities for news organizations, which must navigate a fine line between preserving public trust and potentially infringing on individuals? privacy. The tremendous value of social readers, for example, isn?t just the traffic boost that news organizations get. The ability to know who readers are, and who they?re connected to, is huge. Scoople takes this concept and adds a mechanism to track what people think, as well as how opinions change over time.

?The speed and scale of how news distribution works today is unprecedented,? Mayer said. ?On the other hand, you have opinion research and opinion polling companies that operate the same way that they did 10 or 20 years ago, calling you up and asking your opinion without any context. We felt, let?s start to merge these worlds.?

iPad 2 and other tablet computers may interfere with magnetically programmable shunt valve settings

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? University of Michigan researchers have found that the Apple iPad 2 can interfere with settings of magnetically programmable shunt devices, which are often used to treat children with hydrocephalus. The iPad 2 contains magnets that can change valve settings in the shunt if the tablet computer is held too close to the valve (within 2 in.). Such a change may result in shunt malfunction until the problem is recognized and the valve adjusted to the proper setting. Patients and their caregivers should monitor use of the tablet computer to ensure that no change is made to the valve settings.

The results of this study can be found in the August 2012 issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics.

The researchers first thought of performing this study because a tablet computer seemed to affect a programmable shunt in one of their patients, a four-month-old girl with hydrocephalus. Three weeks after the baby had received the shunt, she was examined for shunt malfunction due to a changed setting in the magnetically programmable valve that regulates the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. The baby's mother stated that she had held an iPad 2 while holding the infant. Programmable shunt valve settings can be altered by exposure to magnetic fields. Indeed, specialized magnets are used by physicians to adjust the settings on these valves. Since in this case no other environmental factor could be identified that would have led to a shift in the valve settings, the authors decided to test whether the iPad 2 might be implicated because, unlike the initial iPad, the iPad 2 contains several magnets and is often used with an Apple Smart Cover, which contains additional magnets.

The researchers tested 10 programmable shunt valves with a variety of settings. They exposed the valves to an iPad 2 with and without the Smart Cover at different distances: less than 1 centimeter (cm), 1-2.5 cm, 2.5-5 cm, 5-10 cm, and greater than 10 cm. Each exposure lasted 10 seconds. Overall, the valves were tested 100 times for each of the five distances during exposures to the iPad 2 with the Smart Cover closed and 30 times for distances less than 1 cm for the tablet computer without the cover.

After exposure of the programmable valves to the iPad 2 and Smart Cover at distances of 0-1 cm, the researchers found that the settings had changed in 58 percent of the valves. After exposure at distances of 1-2.5 cm the settings had changed in 5 percent of valves, and after exposure at distances of 2.5-5 cm the settings had changed in only 1 percent of valves. No changes in valve settings were identified after exposures at higher distances.

After exposure of programmable valves to the iPad 2 without a cover, which was only tested at distances of 0-1 cm, the researchers found that the settings had changed in 67 percent of the valves.

Although no change in setting was found past a distance of 5 cm (2 in.), the authors caution that patients and caregivers should be made aware of the potential for a change in the settings of a magnetically programmable shunt valve if an iPad 2 is placed very near. This is not to say that the iPad 2 cannot be safely used in the vicinity of patients with programmable shunts. A variety of magnets can be found in households today, and the authors state that the magnetic field strength of the iPad 2 lies within the range of these everyday magnets. Therefore, patients and caregivers should regard precautions surrounding the use of the iPad 2 to be the same as those taken with other household magnets. Cormac Maher, MD, a pediatric neurosurgeon and lead author of the report, said that he hopes to raise awareness of this potential interaction through publication of this study.

Spotify's been available to a certain segment of the BlackBerry population for some time now, but as of today it's become an official listing on RIM's app store. The app, which exited beta last December, hasn't changed -- there aren't any UI or performance tweaks in tow, simply a more convenient means of accessing the application without having to redirect to a dedicated mobile site. You can hit up the source below to start your download, but bear in mind you'll need a premium account to take advantage of the company's streaming service on-the-go.
