Onetime Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dan Toler died on Monday of Lou Gehrig's disease in Sarasota, Fla., his official website is reporting.?

Toler was a member of the band from 1979-82, and his age has been reported variously as "in his early 60s" (according to manager Glen Halverson, who spoke to?Reuters), 64 (according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune) and 65 (according to Rolling Stone). Toler (also known as "Dangerous Dan") played on the albums "Enlightened Rogues," "Reach for the Sky" and "Brothers of the Road."?

He and his late brother, drummer David "Frankie" Toler, were members of other bands as well, including Dickey Betts & Great Southern. Both played with the Gregg Allman Band in the 1980s.

In 2009, Dan Toler paired with John Townsend for the Toler/Townsend Band, which released a self-titled independent album that year.

"His ability to make people laugh and feel good and happy was amazing," former bandmate Chaz Trippy told the Herald-Tribune. "That smile of his is just a force of life and, God, how he loved playing that guitar."?

After his brother died in 2011, Toler announced he had been diagnosed with the degenerative nerve disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is often known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Fellow musician and longtime friend Bonnie Bramlett told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune: "To see how Danny walked tall through that disease and play guitar so beautifully with his blue eyes burning (during a November 2011 benefit), what a hero.... He really showed people how to live, and how to die."

Toler is survived by his wife Debbie and their daughter Danielle Franz. A public memorial/celebration is slated to honor him in Sarasota on March 9.

Senate Democrats' bill light on deficit cuts in 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) ? White House-backed legislation in the Senate to replace $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts would raise the deficit through the end of the budget year by tens of billions of dollars, officials said late Wednesday as the two parties maneuvered for public support on economic issues.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said that under the Democratic measure, deficits also would rise in each of the next two years before turning downward.

Democratic officials had said earlier in the day their bill would spread one year's worth of anticipated savings ? $85 billion ? over a decade in an attempt to avoid damaging the shaky economic recovery.

The legislation would cancel across-the-board cuts due to begin on Friday. Instead, it would eliminate payments to some farmers, enact defense reductions beginning in two years and impose tax increases, mostly on millionaires.

White House spokesman Jay Carney recently told reporters at the White House the administration supports the measure.

The Senate is expected to vote on Thursday on rival Democratic and Republican plans to replace the spending cuts, known in Washington-speak as a "sequester." Both bills are expected to fail.

In an indication that across-the-board cuts are inevitable, President Barack Obama has set a meeting with congressional leaders for the day they take effect. While the administration has warned of severe cuts in government services as a result of the reductions, few, if any, are likely to be felt for several weeks.

That could give the administration and lawmakers breathing room to negotiate a replacement, although Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said during the day there were limits to what could be negotiated.

"We can either secure those reductions more intelligently, or we can do it the president's way with across-the board cuts. But one thing Americans simply will not accept is another tax increase to replace spending reductions we already agreed to," he said.

Democrats said their proposal to replace across-the-board cuts was designed with the economy in mind.

It "seeks the same amount of savings in a more responsible way" as the $85 billion in cuts that will otherwise take effect, said Adam Jentleson, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"The impact on the economy is much better. Sequestration as constituted would hurt economic growth and destroy jobs," he added.

Over a decade, the bill would cut deficits by an estimated $110 billion, half from higher taxes and half from the defense and farm program cuts.

That is in keeping with Obama's call for a balanced approach that combines selected spending cuts with closing tax loopholes.

Senate Democrats have been reluctant to spell out the details of their measure, although it is not clear if that results from its relatively small impact on the deficits through the end of the current budget year.

Across the Capitol, though, the party's leaders have talked openly of their desire to spread the cuts in their replacement measure over a longer period.

"It is entirely intentional," said Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and the party's senior member on the House Budget Committee. "The whole idea is to achieve the equivalent deficit reduction without hurting jobs and having disruption in the economy. You do that by having targeted cuts and eliminating tax loopholes over a longer period of time," he added.

He said the Democrats' approach is the same as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's recommendation, which is to help the recovery gain strength before beginning to make cuts.

In the Senate, Republicans have yet to disclose their own sequester replacement measure. Most of the rank and file favors an alternative that lets Obama adjust the cuts to minimize any impact on the public, but that approach has its critics among lawmakers who fear giving the White House that much authority.

France Is Making High-Speed Rail Travel ... - Business Insider

In an effort to boost ridership on its high-speed rail system, France is offering a new low-cost service, with fares from the Paris suburbs to the Mediterranean coast for as little as ?10 ($13).

Ouigo (as in "We Go"), an independently run subsidiary of the SNCF, France's national rail company, will begin operation on April 2. SNCF President Guillaume Pepy calls it the best high-speed rail deal in the world, according to La Tribune.

Ouigo will operate its own trains, with more frequent service than the SNCF currently offers. To allow for such cheap fares, it will adopt the budget travel model offered by airlines like easyJet and Ryanair.

That means cutting service and adding fees. Passengers can bring only one small bag (about the size of an airplane carry-on) and a purse or backpack.

In a move reminiscent of Spirit Airlines' $100 carry-on bag fee, if a traveler waits until boarding time to pay for an extra bag, there's a ?40 charge. If done ahead of time, the cost is only ?5.

Seating in a car with outlets costs an extra ?2; getting information about a reservation via the phone requires another ?1, according to Le Monde.

Reservations can be changed for ?10 (?20 if done on the phone), but not fully reimbursed, and there is no food or drink service on the train.

Another tradeoff for taking Ouigo is that its Paris hub is in Marne la Vall?e (where Euro Disney is located) ? a ?7.30 trip from the city center on the RER, Paris' commuter rail system. Ouigo stations in Lyon, Marseille, and Montpellier are much more central.

As Yonah Freemark at the Transport Politic points out, the SNCF has no competitors in the domestic market, and Ouigo is meant to target travelers who prefer driving to taking the train. (Many of those potential customers own their own cars and live in the Paris suburbs, so the extra RER trip is a minor factor.)

Only 10 percent of all Ouigo tickets will be priced at ?10; the rest will cost at most ?85, according to Freemark. But for those travelers who snatch up the reduced tickets, it's an excellent deal ? especially when France's expensive road tolls and gas prices are accounted for.

Learn All Those Complicated Laundry Instructions with This Handy ChartEver look on a clothing tag for laundry instructions only to find a bunch of hieroglyph-like symbols that you can't decipher? Primer Magazine has a simple chart that shows you what each one means.

Most of them are pretty easy to understand: a crossed out iron means "do not iron," a crossed out dryer means "do not dry," and so on. Other symbols are more confusing: a circle means "dry clean," a triangle means "bleach," and three dots means "high heat" inside of whatever other symbol is present. Blood vessels 'sniff' gut microbes to regulate blood pressure

Researchers at The Johns Hopkins University and Yale University have discovered that a specialized receptor, normally found in the nose, is also in blood vessels throughout the body, sensing small molecules created by microbes that line mammalian intestines, and responding to these molecules by increasing blood pressure. The finding suggests that gut bacteria are an integral part of the body's complex system for maintaining a stable blood pressure.

A description of the research, conducted in mice and test tubes, appeared online Feb. 11 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"The contribution that gut microbes apparently make to blood pressure regulation and human health is a surprise," says Jennifer Pluznick, Ph.D., assistant professor of physiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "There is still much to learn about this mechanism, but we now know some of the players and how they interact," she adds.

Pluznick says that several years ago, thanks to a "happy coincidence," she found in the kidney some of the same odor-sensing proteins that give the nose its powers. Focusing on one of those proteins, olfactory receptor 78 (Olfr78), her team specifically located it in the major branches of the kidney's artery and in the smaller arterioles that lead into the kidney's filtering structures. Olfr78 also turned up in the walls of small blood vessels throughout the body, she says, particularly in the heart, diaphragm, skeletal muscle and skin.

To figure out which molecules bind and activate Olfr78, the scientists programmed cells to have Olfr78 protein receptors on their surface. They also gave these same cells the ability to start a light-producing chemical reaction whenever Olfr78 is activated. By adding different cocktails of molecules to the cells and measuring the light the cells produced, they homed in on a single mixture that activated Olfr78. They then tested each component in that mix and found that only acetic acid (a.k.a. vinegar) bound Olfr78 and caused the reaction.

Acetic acid and its alter ego, acetate, are part of a group of molecules known as short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). When the team tested other molecules in this group, they found that propionate, which is similar to acetate, also binds Olfr78. In the body of mammals, including humans, SCFAs are made when zillions of bacteria lining the gut digest starch and cellulose from plant-based foods. The SCFAs are absorbed by the intestines into the blood stream, where they can interact with Olfr78.

To pinpoint the effect of Olfr78, the scientists gave SCFAs to mice missing the Olfr78 gene and found that the rodents' blood pressure decreased, suggesting that SCFAs normally induce Olfr78 to elevate blood pressure. However, when they gave SCFAs to normal mice with intact Olfr78, they did not see the expected increase in blood pressure, but rather a decrease, though it was less pronounced than before.

To test the effect of reducing the SCFAs available to Olfr78, the team gave mice a three-week course of antibiotics to wipe out the gut microbes responsible for SCFA production. In this case, normal mice showed very little change in blood pressure, but mice without Olfr78 experienced an increase in blood pressure, suggesting that there were other factors involved in the Olfr78/SCFA/blood pressure relationship.

The mystery was solved, Pluznick says, when the team examined mice lacking Gpr41, a non-smell-related protein receptor located in blood vessel walls that also binds SCFAs. When SCFAs bind to Gpr41, blood pressure is decreased. The researchers eventually discovered that Olfr78 and Gpr41 both are activated by SCFAs, but with contradictory effects. The negative effect of Gpr41 is counterbalanced by the positive effect of Olfr78, but Gpr41's effect is stronger, so an increase in SCFAs produces an overall decrease in blood pressure.

"We don't have the full story yet," says Pluznick. "There are many players involved in the maintenance of stable levels of blood pressure, and these are just a few of them. We don't know why it would be beneficial for blood pressure to decrease after eating or why gut microbes would play a part in signaling that change. But our work opens the door for exploring the effects of antibiotic treatments, probiotics and other dietary changes on blood pressure levels in mice, and perhaps eventually people."

Lowe's 4Q net income tops expectations

NEW YORK (AP) -- Home improvement retailer Lowe's Cos. credits cleanup efforts after Superstorm Sandy and its new pricing strategy for fourth-quarter earnings that surpassed Wall Street expectations.

The results are a sign that people are beginning to feel better about spending money on their homes as the housing market slowly recovers. Analysts will be watching Lowe's larger rival Home Depot's earnings report on Tuesday to see if its results show a similar story.

Lowe's CEO Robert Niblock said the company is seeing a pickup in spending even in areas of the country hit hardest by the housing slump, like Florida, Arizona and California.

"Rising home values have given homeowners additional confidence in spending on their homes," Niblock said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Lowe's net income fell 11 percent from last year's quarter, which included an extra week of revenue. Its earnings forecast for the year was below expectations but its revenue projection beat the consensus.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe's has revamped its pricing structure, offering what it says are permanent low prices on many items across the store instead of fleeting discounts. It has also focused on hiring more workers and improving its inventory. In January it said it planned to hire 45,000 seasonal workers ahead of its busy spring season and add 9,000 part time employees on a permanent basis.

In a call with analysts, Chief Customer Officer Greg Bridgeford said the pricing strategy helped spur strong sales of cabinets and countertops, tools and outdoor power equipment.

During the quarter, the number of transactions fell 6.9 percent, mainly due to the extra week in the quarter a year ago. But average ticket rose 2.1 percent to $62.37.

Lowe's net income totaled $288 million, or 26 cents per share, for the three months ended Feb. 1. That's down from $322 million, or 26 cents per share, a year ago. Analysts expected 23 cents per share, according to FactSet.

There were 11 percent fewer shares outstanding in the latest quarter than a year ago. That increases the value of each share. An extra week in the quarter last year had boosted year-ago earnings by 5 cents per share.

Revenue fell 5 percent to $11.05 billion from $11.63 billion. Analysts expected $10.85 billion. Revenue in stores open at least one year rose 1.9 percent. The measure is a key gauge of a retailer's fiscal health because it excludes stores that open or close during the year.

Morningstar analyst Peter Wahlstrom said the quarter was generally good and in line with his expectations, helped by better gross margins ? the amount of each dollar in revenue a company actually keeps ? and a lower share count.

Standard & Poor analyst Michael Souers kept his "Sell" recommendation on the stock.

"While we see a modest recovery in housing, we see rising interest rates as a threat to home refinancing, a key driver of remodeling," he said.

For the fiscal year, net income rose 7 percent to $1.96 billion, or $1.69 per share, from $1.84 billion, or $1.43 per share. Revenue edged up to $50.52 billion from $50.21 billion last year.

Lowe's, which operates 1,754 stores in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, expects fiscal 2013 net income of $2.05 per share. Analysts expect $2.10 per share.

The company expects revenue to rise 4 percent, implying revenue of $52.54 billion. Analysts expect $51.69 billion.

Shares fell $1.81, or 4.8 percent, to close at $35.86 Monday. They have traded in a 52-week range of $24.76 to $39.98.

(AP) ? There was only one fitting way for Tina Maze to wrap up the overall World Cup title ? with another victory, and with plenty of time to spare.

She clinched her first crystal globe Sunday by winning a super-combined for eighth win of the season. So overpowering was her season that she clinched the overall trophy with nine races to go.

"It's really special because it's so difficult to win. For me, it's special to continue this level of skiing," said Maze, who celebrated with a cartwheel. "To be on the top is amazing. It's a great season for me. Even if there have been ups and downs I have always come back."

To Maze, it was also the perfect response to doubters back home in Slovenia. Some mocked her for having the audacity to dream about becoming the world's best skier.

"I think the people are realizing that the dream came true, that one year ago they were saying 'Ah, this Maze, she's making jokes when she says she will win a globe or something like that. Yeah, she's full of herself' and these kinds of things," Maze said. "In Slovenia, it's (the) mentality. It's better to be sometimes (more mainstream) than to go out (and be different) from the majority.

"I didn't want to be like everybody else. So I'm always looking for something else, something better, something different and I'm really proud of that."

Maze led the downhill and coasted home in the slalom after Maria Hoefl-Riesch crashed out of contention. She tied a season record with her 18th top-three finish, matching the podium mark set by Pernilla Wiberg of Sweden and Hanni Wenzel of Liechtenstein.

"I'm an emotional person, I didn't want to cry (on the podium)," Maze said, adding she felt sick before the slalom. "I went to the toilet six times before I started. A lot of people (were) sick and I guess I get something from them, too."

Maze has 1,844 points in the overall standings and looks all but certain to break the season record ?men or women ? of 2,000 held by Austrian great Hermann Maier.

Hoefl-Riesch is second in the overall standings but is 958 points behind and has no chance of closing the gap. Each victory is worth 100 points.

Lindsey Vonn, the four-time overall winner and defending champion, fell out of contention after she took a monthlong break because of an intestinal illness and then was done for the season after a knee injury at the world championships. Vonn is still third overall with 740 points.

"I'm really tired now, especially after a long day like today," the 29-year-old Maze said. "Today was so tough, I didn't know where I was. I almost went off the course twice. But I just managed to catch the gates. It's crazy."

She is also seeking to become only the third woman to have at least one win in all five disciplines in one season, and lacks only a downhill victory. She had a chance Saturday but finished fourth. She has two downhills remaining, starting next week in the German resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Vonn won 12 races last season and Maze has a chance of matching that, although Swiss great Vreni Schneider's single-season World Cup record of 14 wins appears out of sight.

Nicole Hosp of Austria, the world championship bronze medalist in the super-combi, finished second. Countrywoman Michaela Kirchgasser took third place with a superb slalom run ? 42.66 seconds to Maze's 44.26.

"My target is to be focused until the end of the season because there are many small globes that are open and possible to get," Maze said. "I want to keep this level of skiing until the end, I don't want to go down, I want to keep it at the high level."

Hosp, the World Cup winner in 2007, lauded Maze's consistency.

"There are no words to describe Tina's amazing season," Hosp said.

Julia Mancuso came close to clinching the fourth super-combi podium of her career and her first in six years. But the American made a small mistake midway through, falling forward on her skis.

It seems only an injury can prevent Maze from breaking Maier's points record, set in 1999-2000. Vonn holds the women's record with 1,980 points from last season.

"It has been an extraordinary season for Tina," Kirchgasser said. "To be so far ahead in the points. Last time it was a man who won with more than 2,000 points, and I don't think Tina will be far off."

Maze's phenomenal season also includes three gold medals from the worlds in Schladming, Austria ? gold in super-G and silver in super-combi and giant slalom. She lost out on a second gold to Hoefl-Riesch and felt Sunday's win somewhat made up for that.

"I had that in mind because in Schladming I didn't do a good slalom," she said. "I didn't risk a lot and today I did different, so at the end it's a revenge, too, but the priority was better skiing from my side.

"It's a good slope. I had some troubles yesterday in downhill," Maze said. "I had some trouble on the top. But the rest of the hill is like a dream."

Chinese Vitamin Makers Head to Trial for Alleged Price-Fixing

Can Chinese companies that allegedly fixed prices for U.S. customers deflect liability by saying they acted at their government's behest? Jurors may get a chance to answer that question this coming week, as an antitrust trial against a group of Chinese vitamin manufacturers opens in federal court in New York. The long-running class action was brought on behalf of direct purchasers of Chinese vitamin C products.

DNS Issues - Web Hosting Talk

Last Friday, I transferred my website to a new host and updated my nameservers as usual.

Now, 3 days on and me along with 2 other users still cannot access the site. Me and one other still see the temporary "moving" page that I left on the old server to be displayed during the domain propagation and the other user gets a blank screen.

I can access the website just fine using a proxy or hotspot shield and without a proxy I can access my cPanel, however this is via my host's domain instead.

My domain is www.lcresponders.com, and my report from dnsstuff can be seen here:

http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools#dnsRep...sponders.com&&

Please advise me on how to correct this issue.
Thanks
-Tom

Hi there Net,
Thanks for your reply. I'm a little new to this side of the internet, so please bear with me. I've updated my name servers are godaddy, which is who my domain is registered with. Is that the only place where I need to do that?

Thanks again
-Tom

Your nameservers are set properly at your registrar, but your DNS records are messed up. It works for me, but your intodns.com report is a disaster.

http://intodns.com/lcresponders.com

Edit your DNS zone file to agree with DNS at your registrar.

You need to correct the "NS records" within your DNS zone file

The problem is that the DNS manager seems to be hosted at my old host. How can I move it to my new one?
Thanks

Login to your domain registrar, then edit the nameserver settings to point to your new host.

What DNS manager is that? Without knowing which host is new and which is old it's hard to tell, but my guess is that the nameservers are set correctly at your registrar but not at the new host. If so you need to log into WHM at the new host and edit zone. You can use the host's domain or IP address to be sure that you're connecting to the "right" WHM.

(It wouldn't be a bad idea for the new host to fix the DNS errors on their nameserver domain too, but those are less of an issue).

My old host was:
www.nextgenhost.net
And my new is:
www.offshorewebspace.net

I logged into my old cPanel at nextgenhost and edited the DNS for my domain to point to my new host. This solved the problem but I want to fix this properly.

The new host also uses capable for the DNS managing.

cPanel? So you need to edit your zone in cPanel / WHM at offshorewebspace and change the NS records, which are currently set to nextgenhost.

Apologies, I meant cPanel. iPhone decided to help me out with spelling lol...

I can't seem to see where to edit my nameservers in the cPanel, the only thing that I can see is the "Advanced DNS zone editor" which I've screenshotted so you can take a look. As far as I can see, the settings are correct.

EDIT:
My account with nextgenhost (the previous host) is still active and this is where the DNS manager is. What happens if I cancel it? Will it help?

Are you server admin? If so yes it is, go to admin whm/cpanel => Advanced DNS zone editor => lcresponders.com and setup yor Arecord, ns record and etc.
If you are not, contact to DC and ask them to fix that.

Yes, if you can't see the NS records then I guess it means you don't have access to them through that panel (perhaps someone more familiar with cPanel can confirm) and the host will have to make the change for you.

No, you've changed the A records at the old host - that's keeping your site working for now. Get the new host's DNS fixed and wait at least 24 hours before canceling the old one.

A BATTING WITH BIMAL BREAKING REPORT: South Africa to tour Netherlands at the end of May

AB de Villiers will lead South Africa during the ODI against the Netherlands

South Africa will tour the Netherlands at the end of May in preparation for the Champions Trophy, which will be hosted by England in June, where their first match will be against India on June 6.

The two teams will be involved in team-building activities and three days worth of practice before an ODI is held on?May 31 in Amstelveen.

This will be the third ODI between the two countries, but the first outside of a World Cup.

South Africa have registered massive wins in every match they have played against the Netherlands.

?We feel we have pulled off a real coup in getting one of the top ODI Nations in the World to come to the Netherlands not only to play but also to act as their preparation-base for this major tournament,? Netherlands CEO Richard Cox said. ?We are looking forward to having some of the household names of world cricket on our doorstep.

?As a result of the Champions Trophy being held in the UK it has given many European countries the opportunity to maximise the chance to play a Full Member through the support of ICC?s TAPP funding policy.?

Netherlands coach?Peter Drinnen noted that it was an outstanding opportunity for his side to get some valuable match experience against one of the top ranked ODI sides in the world.

?I would like to thank everyone who was involved in making this possible,? Drinnen said. ?It is a great opportunity to showcase the game in this country as well as provide an extremely valuable opportunity to our players to measure themselves against some of the best in the world.

?These opportunities are very important for our continued development and I know all parties here in the Netherlands involved in this series will be working hard on and off the park to ensure the South African touring party have a very beneficial stay with us.?
