Best Anti Aging Products and Beauty Treatments - Shape Magazine

You follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly, drink alcohol in moderation, and don't smoke, but you still can't stop the hands of Father Time. While there's no shortage of beauty products that claim to fade dark spots, reduce wrinkles, and repair sun damage, it can be hard to know which ones you can trust. That's why we did the dirty work for you (rough life, we know). After rounding up the newest and most popular beauty and anti-aging products, we've picked the three that will best turn back the clock.

1. SeroVital: A more affordable alternative to monthly hGH injections, SeroVital (pictured at left) comes in pill format. It contains a special blend of amino acids that, when taken on an empty stomach, have been shown to naturally boost your body's production of hGH, thus leading to more youthful and radiant skin, an improved mood, and a better sex drive.

2. Adventuress Vividly Restorative Skin Purifier: Designed by an active woman for active women always on the go, the Adventuress Vividly Restorative Skin Purifier decongests environmentally damaged skin, reduces breakouts, and promotes cell turnover, all of which come together to promote beautiful, firm, and healthy skin. It's perfect for use after a long day at the slopes or whenever your face needs a little TLC.

3. Avon Clinical Pro Line Eraser Treatment: Fade deep wrinkles with this pro line eraser treatment. Instead of using harsh fillers such as collagen or retinol, it uses an amino acid called A-F33 to help fade the look of wrinkles in as little as one week.

No Apple TV Until November 2013, Says Analyst ... - Business Insider

Ap Image of Tim Cook, Photo illustration by Jay Yarow

?

If Apple does release an all-in-one television, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster thinks it comes out in November of 2013.

This is big change in Munster's thinking. Earlier this year Munster was calling for Apple to announce the Apple television in December, then release it in the first half of 2013.

Munster doesn't provide any reason for a change in his thinking.

Multiple reports have come out this quarter about Apple not being able to reach a deal with cable companies for an Apple television. And despite a different analyst saying he believes an Apple TV is imminent, it doesn't sound like an Apple television is on deck for Apple in the next few months.?

Munster's revised thinking on the Apple TV release was buried in a note on his product roadmap for Apple in 2013. Here's how he sees Apple's 2013 playing out:

  • March 2013: iPad Mini with Retina display, update the little Apple TV box, allowing to do accept apps from developers, and some sort of iTunes radio product.
  • June 2013: WWDC brings us previews of iOS 7, and OSX, as well as MacBook Airs with Retina displays. Look for Jony Ive's influence over iOS to start showing up here.
  • September 2013: iPhone 5S, a "modest upgrade" from the iPhone 5. The iPad Mini gets a specs bump, and we get a new iPad, which is totally redesigned to look more like the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini.
  • November 2013: An Apple TV comes out. It should cost $1,500-$2,000 and come in sizes from 42-inches to 55-inches.

John DePetro, Psychic Readings and Catholicism

The catechism of the Catholic Church is quite clear on the matter of communicating with the dead. On the official Vatican website under the heading ?Divination and Magic? is the clear Church teaching on the matter (emphasis mine):

2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to ?unveil? the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

Essentially, no Catholic in good standing should avail themselves of a medium, or promote the belief in a medium?s powers.

This is what so surprised me about the November 15th episode of the John DePetro Show featuring psychic medium John Edward. Call me naive but despite whatever differences exist between me and DePetro regarding religion and politics I always thought the radio personality was at least being honest when he maintained to me, his listeners and to frequent guest Bishop Tobin of the Providence Diocese that he was a devout Roman Catholic.

It is, after all, DePetro?s Catholicism that informs his attitudes on things like the State House holiday tree, the Cranston West prayer banner and the Woonsocket cross, among other issues. When I was on the DePetro Show to talk about the death threats made against my niece Jessica Ahlquist in the wake of the judge?s decision on the Cranston West prayer banner, DePetro asked me if Jessica was a witch, or a devil worshiper. These were ridiculous questions, and of course I answered that she wasn?t, but when self-proclaimed psychic John Edward was on his show, professing the ability to talk to the dead, DePetro practically bent over backwards to kiss ass, even though the Catholic Church categorizes psychic mediums alongside witches and devil worshipers as a matter of course.

DePetro says that Edward is ?one my favorite guests that we have on the program? and wishes him ?much continued success.? DePetro eagerly helped Edward sell his books, his website, and his personal appearances and shows. DePetro seemed genuinely entranced by the success of Edward?s website, which sells the concept of communicating with the dead. DePetro also gushed over the fact that Edward has a book on the New York Times bestseller list, and he joined with the callers to the show at being amazed at Edward?s supposed psychic abilities.

John Edward claims to be psychic, but as has been pointed out everywhere from Wikipedia to South Park, nothing he does hints at any sort of real supernatural power. Instead, it all seems to be based on a technique called cold reading ?a series of techniques used by mentalists, psychics, fortune-tellers, and illusionists to determine or express details about another person, often in order to convince them that the reader knows much more about a subject than they actually do.? On South Park Edward is awarded the title of the biggest douche in the universe, and the episode contains the following bit of dialog between Stan and John Edward.

John Edwards:
But I?m a psychic.

Stan:
No dude, you?re a douche.

John Edwards:
I?m not a douche. What if I really believe dead people talk to me?

Stan:
Then you?re a stupid douche.

On the John DePetro Show in question Edward performed no better and actually quite a bit worse than a stage magician might have using techniques that are not the least bit supernatural in nature. In the following transcript, Edward communicates with Christine:

Edward: Hi Christine.

Christine: Hi how are ya?

Edward: Good. Are you Christine Marie?

Here Edward makes his first psychic guess, and he?s flat out wrong.

Christine: No.

Edward: Who?s the ?M? name connected to you Christine?

Christine: Um?I don?t know. (nervous laughter)

Edward: Is it somebody living connected to you with an ?M??

Christine: I?m trying to think? No nothing that I know of?

Getting nowhere, Edward abandons that line of inquiry for a moment.

Edward: Okay. Keep going. What was your question?

Christine: Uh, I was just- my father passed away and I just wanted to know if he was happy and if he was with his dog and my grandmother who passed away who I lived with a long time ago. I always felt that I didn?t do enough for her when I was with her and I?ve always had regrets about that.

Edward: Um, I have to tell you I?m seeing a huge ?M? connected to you.

Christine: M? Well, my last name begins with M.

Edward: Oh. So you?re Christine M.

Christine: Yes.

Circling back, Edward suddenly gets a hit. But think back a few seconds ago. Edward asked about an ?M? name connected to Christine, who of course was thinking about someone other than herself. When Christine reveals that her last name begins with M, Edward can retroactively claim that this is what he was going for all the time. I should also point out here that Christine is dealing with quite a bit of guilt about the way she treated her grandmother and worry about the fate of her grandfather. Edward seems less interested in comforting Christine than he does in scoring a ?hit.?

Edward: Okay. Because they?re telling me to put an M next to you and I?m like I thought that your middle name was with the M. Um, I do believe that your dad is totally with family and our fur pawed friends are definitely family specifically in my frame of reference. And somebody has a heart problem and they passed one, two, three, correct?

This is Edward talking fast, retrofitting information to his guesses, pausing briefly to provide false comfort to a bereaved woman with tales of her father living in the afterlife with a favorite pet, and then jumping to heart disease, the most common way for older males to die.

Christine: Uh, well yeah. Well, my dad kind of passed kind of like unexpectedly but you know through bad circumstances.

Christine does not confirm that her father died of heart disease. Just that he died ?through bad circumstances? which sounds like it might be due to accident or crime rather than disease. Either way, Edward does not press the point. He moves off the ?dad had a heart attack? idea and onto another deceased relative, or someone close to Christine and her father, who might have died that way.

Edward: Well, here?s what I?m seeing and you know I have a limited amount of time. I know that there?s somebody that?s with your dad, or with you, that passed from a sudden heart attack there was no pre-existing kind of clue? that this was happening

Christine: Mm-hm

Edward: And they?re coming through with your dad and around you. All righty?

Christine: Okay.

And that?s it. Hell of a psychic reading, isn?t it? Christine provided no confirmation about anything Edward said. What did Christine learn from this encounter? That her dad was in heaven with his favorite pet and that he knew someone up there who died of heart disease, the most common way for men to die. Since she offered up the idea that her father might be in heaven with his pet, all Edward did was agree with her. She learned exactly nothing, unless you count the fact that her last name began with the letter ?M.?

Here?s the last caller of the morning, Kevin. Every guess Edward made in this encounter was wrong or went nowhere. It is hard to imagine a less impressive display of psychic ability:

Edward: I heard, I saw, in my head, somebody who drove a truck for a living. So, I don?t know if somebody actually worked in the trucking industry or transportation, but I was supposed to talk about someone?s truck or somebody driving in their truck for a living. Did somebody do that?

Kevin: My father was a fireman.

Edward: So he drove the firetruck?

Kevin: He was involved with the truck. Absolutely.

Edward: Is there something that you were doing this week, a lot of times they?ll talk about current affairs or current events around but is there something that you were doing that?s like talking about that talking about his involvement with that talking about, maybe looking at the photos or things of that nature?

Kevin: Uh, not really. I think about him all the time.

Edward: And why am I seeing 1986, 1987, what took place around then in the family?

Kevin: Um?

Edward: It?s got to be after 1985 and before 1989, I?ll tell you why, I started owing this work in 1985 and my mom passed in 1989 and I feel like it?s in between that period of time that I?m supposed to highlight something. But I feel that your dad would be the one. Is he the one connected to the truck, your dad is the one that I was sensing but there?s something about that time period that I want to highlight for you.

Kevin: uh? My brother passed away in 1996?

Edward: Nope. Too late it?s got to be before that. It?s got to be after 1985

Kevin: I moved from New York to Rhode Island in ?84, but that?s before ?85.

Edward: Nope. I think it?s right after that.

Kevin: Nope.

Edward: If that?s your benchmark, if that?s your move from New York to Rhode Island, think right after that. Like within a couple of years maybe somebody was born, maybe somebody got married but something had to take place within that period of time.

Kevin: uh?

Edwards: I?m sure your family?s around you.

Kevin: Okay.

Edward got zero out of zero on that one.

It should be pointed out that Edward does not consider himself to be just a performer. He writes books that are supposedly non-fiction that purport to explain psychic powers and abilities to people. He maintains that he has real and true psychic abilities. Edward is not doing a magic show with ?tricks? and with an audience prepared to be knowingly deceived, he actually claims to communicate with the dead.

Edward performs to sold old audiences and maintains a for pay website, JohnEdward.net. As DePetro says in his opening:

Go to his website. I don?t know where he gets any time off. John Edward.net. Communicate Appreciate, Validate. Then you look at some of the events. He?s going to be in Boston November 29th. Sold out. November 30th in Boston. Sold out. December 1st, New Brunswick New Jersey. Sold out.

DePetro doesn?t mention that tickets to the Edward events are $150 each. Edward has books on and off the New York Times bestsellers lists. He charges $800 for private consultations. he has a TV show. He makes a lot of money, maybe millions, claiming to connect gullible and bereaved people with their deceased loved ones.

It?s not like Edwards hasn?t been called on this. The Center for Inquiry reports on a Dateline: NBC episode where Edwards claimed to have gleaned psychically information he was known to have gotten through ordinary means. Reporter John Hockenberry interviewed Edward:

Hockenberry: So were you aware that his dad had died before you did his reading?

Edward: I think he-I think earlier in the-in the day, he had said something.

Hockenberry: It makes me feel like, you know, that that?s fairly significant. I mean, you knew that he had a dead relative and you knew it was the dad.

Edward: OK.

Hockenberry: So that?s not some energy coming through, that?s something you knew going in. You knew his name was Tony and you knew that his dad had died and you knew that he was in the room, right? That gets you?

Edward: That?s a whole lot of thinking you got me doing, then. Like I said, I react to what?s coming through, what I see, hear and feel. I interpret what I?m seeing hearing and feeling, and I define it. He raised his hand, it made sense for him. Great.

Hockenberry: But a cynic would look at that and go, ?Hey,? you know, ?He knows it?s the cameraman, he knows it?s Dateline. You know, wouldn?t that be impressive if he can get the cameraman to cry??

Edward: Absolutely not. Absolutely not. Not at all.

Reasonable people know that John Edward cannot actually talk to the dead. It is barely possible that Edward believes he does in fact possess such an ability, but far more likely that he knows that he cannot and that he is faking it. It is also barely possible that Edward rationalizes the massive amount of money he takes from gullible and desperate believers by believing that he provides some sort of comfort, however false, as well as entertainment. But it is also possible that Edward is knowingly taking money from people under false pretenses, and laughing all the way to the bank, building a fortune on the backs of people who have lost those they loved most.

As South Park put it, John Edwards is either a douche, or a stupid douche.

The same goes for John DePetro. As I pointed out, DePetro can hardly maintain the facade of being a good Catholic while at the same time extolling the virtues of Edward?s supposed psychic powers. Mediumship is anti-Catholic at best, and at worst it is considered Satanic.

DePetro does not stand to make millions by promoting Edward so fiercely, at best he?ll score a small ratings bump. Perhaps DePetro simply believes that Edward is a performer, providing comfort, false as it is, alongside a good dollop of entertainment. But DePetro knows that all or nearly all of Edward?s fans and followers really believe in his professed abilities, and presenting something false as truth is, to borrow from South Park, douchey.

If John Edward is, after all, the biggest douche in the universe, perhaps those like John DePetro who help sell and promote his deceptions, are angling to come in second.

The Nature of Prostate Cancer - Darien, CT Patch

My husband, sister-in-law and I sat together with my father-in-law as he breathed his last breaths. Dying from complications from prostate cancer, Paul endured dozens of difficult, painful and intrusive treatments. His quality of life had been poor for many years. He accepted this bravely, but when the end came?which was five years ago this past Saturday?it was a relief.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 2012 will see the diagnoses of another 241,740 new cases of PC. And although prostate cancer affects as many men as breast cancer does women, there is a lack of public awareness of this life-changing disease that must be addressed.

Breast cancer advocacy organizations have done an outstanding job raising funds and awareness for their cause. As many readers are no doubt aware, October saw an outpouring of pink ribbons in sports, on billboards and in the news as survivors, family members and volunteers stepped forward to help end this terrible disease.

Yet aside from skin cancer, the CDC reports that PC is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in men. African Americans and men with close hereditary ties to PC are more susceptible to the disease. Thankfully, hospitals have stepped up screening efforts, and as a result, incidence rates have declined steadily since 2004.

Unfortunately, it is still the second-leading cause of death among American men. Nearly 29,000 will succumb this year from prostate cancer. Since the disease itself usually offers no symptoms in its early stages, many men find themselves facing difficult treatment options as the disease progresses.

Advanced disease symptoms nearly always include difficulty with urination. Increased frequency, difficulty starting or stopping urination, evidence of blood, a burning sensation and weak or interrupted flow commonly occur. If it has spread to the bones, victims tend to feel pain in the hips, spine, ribs and more, according to the CDC.

There is no consensus on a ?best? way to treat prostate cancer, even in its earliest stages. Laparoscopic surgery and radiation treatments are common early, while chemotherapy is often used later. Hormones, Paul?s initial treatment, are also still used; unfortunately, at some point the cancer becomes hormone-refractory (meaning, the hormone treatment is no longer effective).

Men with hormone refractory prostate cancer may be appropriate candidates for Provenge, a recently developed vaccine that prolongs life when chemotherapy and hormones no longer work. And Zytiga, the CDC reports, is a new drug that treats metastatic HRPC patients.

Although the United States leads the way in medical research in any number of areas, the traditional American approach to treating prostate cancer differs greatly with the method of treatment in Europe. While American doctors recommend early screening and treatment?even though a recent study counter-indicated early screening effectiveness at saving lives? historically, European doctors have preferred the wait-and-see approach.

Here?s the rationale: Because prostate cancer cells are often slow growers, and the treatment options for prostate cancer frequently cause impotence, pain, discomfort, weight loss and reduced immunity to other illnesses, these doctors feel it?s simply better to let the disease run its course. In other words, these doctors advise their patients to (potentially) trade length of life for one of higher quality.

Recent evidence suggests, however, that European patients are unwilling to adopt this relaxed approach.

Paul was originally diagnosed in 1991 after an unexplained illness wouldn?t clear up. When his physicians discovered the cancer, it was stage 4 and it had metastasized throughout his body. His doctors estimated he had a 10 percent chance of survival.

Miraculously, through hormone treatment, he went into remission; unfortunately, the cancer returned with a vengeance just after he retired.

During the last years of his life, we watched helplessly as he underwent endless rounds of chemotherapy that depleted his energy and his appetite. A simple tooth extraction caused excruciating pain in his jaw, from which he never recovered and rendered eating even the softest of foods difficult.

He was unable to drive or care for himself without assistance from others. Methadone and morphine were the painkillers of choice in his long cocktail of daily medicines. He was happy to see us visit?Paul still lived on Long Island and we drove there nearly every weekend for more than a year to visit him before he died?but he grew increasingly quiet as the prognosis grew dimmer and dimmer.

It was the only time I have ever been with someone when they passed. He squeezed our hands, gasped quietly, and fell still.

I knew then two things for certain. The first is that I do not want to be alone when I die. The second? Family is everything.?

Adventurous Eating Helped Human Ancestors Boost Odds Of Survival

The first prehistoric chef who looked out at a field of grass in Africa and said, "dinner!" may have helped our ancestors use new resources in new locations.

Roberto Schmidt/AFP/Getty Images

Picture, if you can, a prehistoric Bobby Flay ? an inventive 3 million-year-old version of the Food Network star chef. He's struggling to liven up yet another salad of herbs and twigs when inspiration strikes. "We've got grass here, and sedge," he says. "Grass and sedge, that's what this dish needs!"

His pals take a tentative taste of this nouvelle cuisine. Sedges usually aren't considered gourmet fare, after all, by these human ancestors. They're tough grasslike plants that grow in marshes. But wow! Not only is this a new taste sensation, it's found in many places.

This kind of discovery of new foods may have upped the odds of survival for human ancestors, archeologists say in a new paper.

Archaeologists are intensely interested in what those ancestors ate, and how changes in the diet may have influenced how we became humans.

By analyzing the carbon in fossil teeth of Australopithecus bahrelghazi, a hominin that lived about 3 million years ago in what is now Chad, scientists were able to figure out that they ate grasses and sedge, not the bush-and-herb diet typical of early primates, or today's great apes.

It's progress, but was it tasty? Probably not, says Julia Lee-Thorp. "Bleah. That's about the right response." They also weren't very nutritious, adds Lee-Thorp, a professor of archeology at the University of Oxford in England, who led the new research. Her report is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

That hasn't discouraged fans of the paleo diet, who argue that eating these so-called C4 plants ? corn and grasses that typically grow in warmer savanna climates and are named for the way that plants fix carbon as they photosynthesize? are a lot healthier than plants that make the C3 form of carbon. C3 plants include beans, rice, and potatoes.

Broadening their diet to include a variety of plants may have made it more likely that these early primates could expand into new territory. "It's possible that they were driven" to eat new foods, Lee-Thorp tells The Salt. "But it's more likely that this was a new niche, a new opportunity that arose. "

So dietary adventures could have led early human ancestors on the first steps of migrations through Africa and beyond.

Full profile

SINGAPORE/BEIJING |?Chinese payment-service pioneer PayEase announced today that it has signed a new agreement with CyberSource, a Visa company (NYSE Code: V) and one of the world?s largest providers of eCommerce payment management services, for the provision of fraud management services to protect Chinese domestic online payments.

?

For CyberSource, the agreement builds on a business relationship with PayEase, started back in 2009 when PayEase became the first mainland China payment service provider (PSP) to use CyberSource?fs Decision Manager for cross-border transactions. The significance of this expanded deal is that it will cover PayEase?fs domestic China business . another first.

?

?gPayEase has successfully used Decision Manager for cross-border fraud control over the past few years and recognizes the value it brings to their growing and expanding business,?h said Poon Khye Wei, Regional Director of Greater China and Korea for Cybersource. ?gDecision Manager helps detect fraudulent behavior using a wide array of tests. PayEase will continue to benefit from this powerful feature when it starts to use Decision Manager for managing domestic fraud. This will enable PayEase to provide a more convenient, safer method of payment in the domestic market.?h

?

The add-on development work has been completed and the enhanced service is now available.

?

?gPayEase is determined to offer its customers in China the same market-leading technology and best practice that has proved so effective in our cross-border business,?h said Kino Kwok, EVP of PayEase. ?gWe strive to continuously improve our service to our customers in China by leveraging innovation and technology, and CyberSource helps us to deliver that.?h

?

Online retail sales in China have soared in recent years and are expected to hit US$360 billion by 2015, according to The Boston Consulting Group, up from around US$121 billion in 2011.

?

PayEase is one of the leading PSPs in China, with offices worldwide. It essentially provides a service and goods purchase confirmation platform that delivers immediately following the completion of the payment, anywhere, anytime throughout China. PayEase processes payments from a variety of different channels, including mobile payments via SMS, RFID eWallet payments, mobile dongle POS, internet banking, call centers and point of sale terminals.

?

?gWhen existing customers want to expand their business with us, it says a lot about the quality and effectiveness of the technology and service we provide,?h said Michael Bradley, APAC Managing Director, CyberSource. ?gWe enable merchants and third parties to convert more sales into revenue, with increased security and reduced payment risk. It means our customers, such as PayEase, are able to capture and keep more revenue worldwide. We believe it?fs a compelling proposition.?h

?

By mid-2012, China?fs internet population numbered 538 million. According to the China Electronic Commerce Association, in the year to June 30, 198 million internet users in China shopped online. However, with online fraud, one consequence is the continued practice of shopping online and paying cash on delivery, a costly and inefficient process for merchants. As such, addressing payment security and fraud management is fundamental to enabling the growth of China?s eCommerce space. 6 Online Dating Mistakes You Must Avoid | Cyber Dating Expert

Online Dating MistakesRecently on MensFitness.com, I was asked to chime in on some of the huge mistakes both men and women were making in their online dating profiles. As an online dating expert and one who has studied the industry since its infancy, the list could have easily jumped to 50 items. Meredith Bodgas selected her top 10 favorites for the story, 10 Little Ways to Kill Your Online Dating Game. We were glad to contribute to the story.

1. DON?T include a laundry list of turnoffs in your profile.
No one wants to date a guy who?s too judgmental.? Instead, mention the traits you do want in a girlfriend. You?ll seem way less negative.

2. DON?T Say you want a ?drama-free? woman.
It?s a clich? that will not only turn a woman off, but it sends the message that you?ve got excess baggage regarding your ex. Most women will realize you have unresolved issues from past relationships and probably take a pass. Instead, stick to naming the positive qualities you seek in a mate or a date.

3.? DON?T Mention sex in your profile.
Include that, and the ladies may think that you?re looking for a hook up. Worried you?ll wind up with a prude? Don?t. Women know that intimacy?s part of the package if the relationship moves forward.

4.?DON?T Start IMing right away.
Many women don?t like receiving IMs from men whose profiles they haven?t read yet. So start the dialogue with an e-mail to give her a chance to check out your details. And hold off on IMing until you?ve exchanged a few e-mails. It?s a digital courtship and you need to know the rules to play the game and win.

5.?DON?T Tell a woman she?s hot.
Focusing on the physical makes a woman feel you?re not interested in getting to know the real her. Mention something else you admired about her profile if you want your email to be taken seriously.

6. DON?T Wait too long to ask her out.
I believe you should take your relationship from online to offline after a few e-mails,? otherwise, you?ll end up with a digital pen-pal, which isn?t quite the point of online dating. If there?s chemistry after one phone chat, set a date to meet in person.

[Interview] 3 Circles of Wealth, Telephones and Making Clients ...

  • The Daily Egg
  • Interview] 3 Circles of Wealth, Telephones and Making Clients? Wives Happy
by Adam Kreitman 11/12/2012

Those of us who spend most of our days online tend to focus a lot on ?internet? businesses ? ecommerce, affiliate marketing, info products, etc.

But there?s a whole world of ?real world? service providers out there ? financial planners, attorneys, chiropractors, consultants, etc. who increasingly rely on the internet to grow their practices.

If you?re one of them, this interview is for you. We?ve lined up one of the best.? Internet marketing consultant Chris Goegan (?The Marketing Engineer?) who specializes in helping service providers leverage the Internet to book themselves solid.

Chris uses his marketing process to help small businesses in 61 different industries, generate tens of millions in revenue. In this interview he shares some of his keen insights into how service providers can use the internet to grow their client base.

1. Can you share an example of a change you?ve made to a client?s website that?s had the biggest impact on conversions (the more specific the numbers, the better for the Crazy Egg audience)?

One of my favorites is from a local high end photographer that allowed us to help him. He had a great product and was successfully selling it. For some reason the number of phone calls and sales went flat and started spiraling downwards. We analyzed what was going on and found opportunities for growth.

The biggest was how he was telling his story.

When I interviewed him I was astonished at the people he was commissioned to photograph ? Princess Diana, Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev and Michael Jordan to mention a few. He had a great product, with a great story and a unique offer, the problem was he was falling short in how he was presenting it.

His biggest issue was that he was so busy being successful that he didn?t have time to talk with every prospect on the phone and try to sell them on his services. He wanted to tilt the table in his direction and simply have clients call to book appointments so he could focus on what he did best ? taking breathtaking photos.

We built a new landing page with brand new copy that was much more emotional and had a viral component to it.

It was completely different from anything else on the market. The results ? he went from 5 calls per week and closing one, to 7 calls per week of clients pre-sold and wanting to book appointments.

His wife was the one taking the calls and she commented on how much happier she was because the calls were now easy and fun. A happy wife is always a good bonus!

His average sale increased by approximately 15% and more significant was his increase in sales volume. He brought in $70,000 in sales over 67 days above and beyond what he was previously doing.

2. Tell us about a change/test you thought was going to work in boosting conversions but backfired.

I had a program that was a complete flop. Very humbling. Nobody wants those stories but we all have them.

While we have well over a 90% success rate from working with hundreds of clients, there was one that pains me the most. A fitness model was publishing a new book and wanted help promoting it.

We were sub-contracted by a marketing consultant to help build out a sales page and follow-up sequence. We had helped a couple other authors sell over 100,000 books each that were both translated in 8 different languages at last count so I thought this was a slam dunk.

Did you ever have a project you look back on and wonder why you took it? That?s how this was for me.

I thought the copy we made on the site was solid. The problem is that I was told there was a large list of loyal followers. Normally I like to test a list. For example, I have a different client that had a list of 24,000 people but the problem is they had NOT communicated with them for years.

So the effective list is closer to 2000. That?s a BIG difference that greatly impacts the strategy! With this fitness model, I don?t know why I assumed the information was accurate that they had a large responsive list that loved her. I should have checked this and didn?t. I also didn?t check who the real market was that we were selling to and the segments in the market. I went off of too many assumptions.

And you know that old saying about when you assume things right? Well, I felt like the donkey. The mailing went to what was supposed to be a HOT and RESPONSIVE list. We mailed to a test of about 3000 people. I think 3 bought the book. Two were family members. Ouch. Live and learn eh?!

I made changes to our operating system to help ensure that doesn?t happen again. In my opinion, painful lessons should only be experienced once.

When it comes to conversions, here?s a vital point to understand ? you want to test things. That means you have to be prepared to fail. I?ve had to get over that. I?ve made it into a game that both me and my clients like to play. It?s all about understanding your customer better. Whoever understands the customer best wins.

3. If a service provider was only able to focus on 1 aspect of their website (ie. headline, offer, copy, layout, images) in order to boost conversions, what would it be and why?

Copy. Hands down it is the copy. Why?

If you had to focus on only one aspect for a salesman for your company, what would you pick? If the whole livelihood of your business, if your income source was only dependent on one characteristic, what would it be? ? haircut, smile, handshake, appearance or the ability to sell?

Your website is your salesman.

The copy is your sales person working. Get their pitch down then work on their image (And please match their image to the market.)

If you?re selling to the affluent, dress your copy in a classy suit. If you?re selling to blue collar, dress it down some. We had a really ugly site with killer copy that was converting above 20% and several ?image? or ?branding? consultants approached us saying how ugly it was and how horrible it was. When we told them how it was converting we didn?t hear from them again.

Images are important and make sure you have them, just don?t make that your focal point at the expense of the copy. A nice outfit might get a date or two, but it?s the substance that will lead to marriage.

4. What are the top 3 metrics you?re looking at on a service provider?s site to gauge the effectiveness of their marketing efforts and what are you looking for in each?

I divide things up into what I call the Three Circles of Wealth ? their TCP (Traffic, Conversion, Profitability). In the last 20+ years of working with hundreds of businesses, I?ve found that every business has these. If they understand their TCP and how it works together, it brings them great success, the ones that don?t stay flat or spiral downwards.

For traffic, I?m looking at the traffic sources coming to their website ? Adwords, PPC, SEO, email blasts, direct mail, etc. I?m looking to understand all the different traffic sources and what volume of visitors it brings to their site.

For conversions, I?m looking at traffic flow through the website.?With your website, set up the path you want visitors to go on, then observe the path they are taking and adjust to make it easier for them.

For profitability, I?m looking to see if they are making money. What are the traffic costs? What are the conversion and opt-in rates? What is the ROI? Are they making money off of the initial transaction?

Most service providers should be very profitable off the initial transaction. What is the average sale? What is the cost per lead? What is the client acquisition cost? What is the value of a client? What is the lifetime value of a client? These are some of the questions you should have answers to. Do you?

5. What resources would you recommend for someone focused on improving conversions on their site?

I also recommend getting books on sales. Two of the best little-known books on selling are ?Why People Buy? by Guy Baker and ?Sell Little Red Hen! Sell!? by Jeffrey Hansler.

6. Do you have a favorite software/tool (not including Crazy Egg) that you use to help optimize websites?

Analytics and telephone. Analytics will help you understand what people are doing. The phone will tell you why they?re doing it.

Most people are afraid to use the phone and talk to clients and prospects. I?ve done thousands of interviews and people LOVE to give their feedback. It helps to be curious and genuinely interested in them.

There?s a very short list of questions I have that service providers can ask to increase conversions on their websites. Maybe someday I?ll share that! ? Hey, I can?t give away all my secrets can I?

3 Big Takeaways

There are some golden nuggets in this interview?and not just for service providers. Here are the big 3 I got from Chris:

1. The Three Circles of Wealth ? Traffic, Conversions, Profitability. This is a deceptively simple system but just about everything you need to know about marketing comes down to those three things.

2. ?Whoever understands the customer best wins.? Do your research and truly get into the head of your ideal prospects. If you understand their problems, needs, desires, emotions, etc. better than your competitors, you?re in the driver?s seat.

3. ?Sell Little Red Hen! Sell!? ? I read this book based on Chris? recommendation and there were some very enlightening insights into sales and marketing in it that I haven?t seen before. Particularly when it comes to understanding the values of those you?re selling/marketing to and why it?s so important to understand those values.

What was your big takeaway from the interview? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

A CUP OF JO: Do or Don't: Family photos in the living room

Last night, I read something surprising...

While flipping through The Perfectly Imperfect Home, an illustrated decorating book by Deborah Needleman (the former editor of Domino), I learned that you're not "supposed" to have family photos in your living room or, really, anywhere in the main part of your house. Family photos should be reserved for bedrooms and other private spaces.

Have you ever heard that? Our living room doesn't have many personal photos, but I actually wish we had more! My sister's house is covered in family frame walls, wedding albums, holiday cards from friends...and it's so much fun to look through them all. You can see her personality right away, and her home feels so cozy!

What do you think? Is this rule a do or don't?

P.S. Do or Don't: Magazines in the bathroom (heehee).

Israel fires warning shots into Syria for first time

Errant fire from Syria into the Israeli-held Golan Heights prompted the retaliatory move and warnings from Israel.

By Amy Teibel,?Associated Press / November 11, 2012

Smoke rises after shells exploded in the Syrian village of Bariqa, close to the ceasefire line between Israel and Syria, near Alonei Habashan on the Israeli occupied Golan Heights November 7. On Sunday, Israel fired warning shots into Syria.

Israel?was drawn into the Syrian civil war for the first time on Sunday, firing warning shots into the neighboring country after a stray mortar shell from across the border hit an Israeli military post.

The Israeli military said the mortar fire caused no injuries or damage at the post in the Golan Heights, which Israel?captured from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war and then annexed. But in recent weeks, incidents of errant fire from Syria to the north have multiplied, leading?Israel?to warn that it holds Syria responsible for fire on Israeli-held territory.

"A short while ago, a mortar shell targeted an IDF (Israel?Defense Forces) post in the Golan Heights," said army spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich. "We answered with a warning shot toward Syrian areas. We understand this was a mistake and was not meant to target?Israel?and then that is why we fired a warning shot in retaliation."

The Israeli military also said it filed a complaint through United Nations forces operating in the area, stating that "fire emanating from Syria into?Israel?will not be tolerated and shall be responded to with severity."?Israel returned fire with an anti-tank missile.

Nineteen months of fighting and the mounting chaos engulfing the regime of President Bashar Assad have already spilled across borders with Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan. The danger of drawing in?Israel?as well to a wider regional conflagration is one of the worst-case-scenarios for the civil war.

Violence also flared Sunday on Syria's northern border with Turkey, a common flashpoint. Syrian army forces backed by helicopter gunships and artillery attacked a border area with Turkey after rebels captured a crossing point, activists said.

The Britain-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Ras al-Ayn border area in Syria's northeast was "under siege" as dozens of rebels tried to hold onto the border crossing.

The upheaval has largely had no direct impact on Syria's bitter foe?Israel, and their shared border has remained mostly quiet, as it has been since a 1974 cease-fire.

Still,?Israel?worries that Syria's civil war could spill across into the Golan ??a concern made more immediate by multiple cases of errant fire in recent weeks and?Israel's?claim that three Syrian tanks entered the demilitarized zone on the plateau this month for the first time in 40 years.

Israeli officials do not see PresidentAssad trying to intentionally draw?Israel?into the fighting, though they have raised the possibility of his targeting?Israel?in an act of desperation. Israeli officials have repeatedly said it is only a matter of time before Assad's regime collapses.

Over the weekend, Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon said?Israel?recently conveyed several messages to Syria and Damascus had "conducted itself appropriately." He did not elaborate.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his Cabinet that?Israel?is "closely monitoring" the border with Syria and is "ready for any development."

Israel, Gaza militants trade fire in escalation

JERUALEM (AP) ? Israeli forces struck targets in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, killing one Palestinian and wounding more than 30 others as militants launched dozens of rockets in some of the heaviest fighting the area has seen in months.

The flare-up increased pressure on the Israeli government to put an end to the violence, which escalated over the weekend and could turn into a major conflagration just two months before the country's general election.

Israeli leaders quickly amped up their rhetoric, warning Gaza's Islamic Hamas rulers they will pay a heavy price should they allow rocket fire toward Israel to continue.

"The world must understand that Israel will not sit idly in the face of attempts to attack us," said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "We are prepared to intensify the response."

Low-level cross-border fighting is common in the border area, but clashes escalated Thursday night when an explosives-packed tunnel under the Gaza-Israel frontier blew up, in what the Israeli military called an attempt by Palestinian militants to kill or kidnap soldiers. Palestinians said the blast was a roadside bomb to avenge the death of an 11-year-old boy who was shot dead earlier in the evening during an exchange of fire with Israelis.

Then on Saturday, militants fired an anti-tank missile into an Israeli military jeep patrolling the border fence, wounding four soldiers ? one critically. Casualties of that order are rare for the Israeli military in clashes with Gaza militants.

In response, Israel launched airstrikes that have killed six Gazans and wounded almost 40. Palestinian rocket and mortar barrages have wounded four Israeli civilians and kept a large swath of the country running for cover. The military said more than 80 rockets had landed in Israel and 12,000 Israeli students stayed home from school on Sunday. Later in the day, the military said a Palestinian rocket made a direct hit on an Israeli home in the town of Sderot. No injuries were reported.

Yael Talker, a resident of Kibbutz Reim in southern Israel, said her family spent the night in a makeshift shelter in their home.

"Each time the alarms ring, we hope it's the last," she said. "Our patience is running out ... when we sleep, we dream about bombs. It must stop."

Nearly four years ago, before the last national election, Israel carried out a broad military offensive in Gaza to stop years of rocket fire. Some 1,400 Palestinians were killed in the operation, including hundreds of civilians. Since then, sporadic rocket fire has continued, but Gaza's Hamas rulers have largely refrained from major rocket attacks.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Israel was assessing the situation. He rejected the suggestion that Israel's upcoming Jan. 22 elections could affect the government's response to the current round of violence.

"I don't think the elections have to have any effect on our response," he said. "It shouldn't cause us to refrain from acting, it's not handcuffing us. But it shouldn't provoke us to take an opportunity to launch an operation."

Later, following more rocket attacks, he struck an even stronger tone.

"The upcoming elections in Israel are not and will not be a source of immunity for Hamas," he said in Tel Aviv. "We will strike with an ever-growing intensity. ... If we are forced to go back into Gaza in order to deal Hamas a blow and restore security for all of Israel's citizens, then we will not hesitate to do so."

Hamas' military wing acknowledged taking part in the weekend rocket fire but it accused Netanyahu's hardline government of escalating the violence in order to win votes in January elections.

"The Israeli government is responsible for all the consequences and implications of its escalation," said Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum. "Hamas will not let Palestinian blood be a price for Israeli political and electoral gains."

Israel considers Hamas responsible for all violence that comes from Gaza, but Hamas' active participation in the fighting could prompt Israel to respond more harshly to the attacks.

In a precautionary measure, Hamas evacuated major security installations in fear of an Israeli attack. But political leaders and government officials worked in their offices as usual.

While it remains virulently anti-Israel, Hamas has largely refrained from major attacks over the past four years. It has also sought to keep things quiet as it consolidates control in the territory, which it seized five years ago in a violent takeover.

It is under pressure, however, from smaller militant groups in Gaza to prove it continues to uphold its armed resistance to Israel, and it sometimes joins the hostilities.

The coastal strip is home to numerous militant groups, including murky al-Qaida-inspired organizations that do not answer to Hamas. Gaza has also been flooded with weapons in recent years, many of them believed to have been smuggled from northern Africa and into Gaza through tunnels under the Egyptian border.

The Five Rules To Building Muscle - Keep your mind and body ...

Ask any fitness trainer in any gym and they will tell you that despite the massive advancements made in science and nutrition over the last two decades the majority of gym users are still totally confused when it comes to learning how to build muscle or improve their overall physique.

Should you consider yourself to be one of the many people in need of some help with their fitness journey, you are in the right place today.

Before we begin it is important to point out that there are various ways to get results and almost unlimited variations on training and diet. That's why if you ask ten different people for advice you will more than likely get ten completely different answers. While it's great to have that much variety at your fingertips it often holds people back instead of helping them. They feel they cannot get any further forward because no matter what they do they hear somebody telling that that they're training is incorrect...

So don't be fooled. There are a number of ways to build a better body, there is not just one right way of training and a million wrong ways. Realizing that fact will help you get past the first stumbling block you'll encounter on your path to building a better body, erasing the self doubt in what you are doing and why you are doing it.

Today we shall take a look at some simple rules which, if applied over time, will provide a rock solid foundation for you to build upon. We have used these techniques with seasoned athletes, gym newcomers and reknowned hard gainers alike. To put it bluntly, they work!

Before you head off to the gym you need to do something which will build the starting blocks for your future results. Muscle ain't built in a workout, it's built in the kitchen. If your diet plan is off you will not get the results your hard work on the iron is worth.

By the time you next visit the gym you should have your diet completely sorted out so that you can begin getting immediate results. We will teach you how to do it. One of the biggest misunderstandings in fitness is people believe their diet is something they cannot work out for themselves. They get sucked into celebrity diet fads which don't work. The truth is it's easy to get this sorted out.

Write down the weight you want to reach in pounds and then multiply it by 15. Congratulations, you've done it. Now you have your daily calorie target and yes, it was that simple! If you'd like to build up slowly swap out the multiplication of 15 for a multiplication of 12 instead.

Now that you have that target you are ahead of most other trainers at your local gym. That's right. The number one issue in getting more muscular is done with a calculator, not a dumbbell. Most people never take the time to do it and therefore no matter how regularly they hit the weights they never seem to look any different. I am sure you know a few faces from your local gym who fit this category.

You also need to look at your training program. It needs to be designed to include the exercises which are best for building size and strength and the repetition range needs to hit your hypertrophy zone. This means compound exercises are going to become your best friend and trying to fall into the eight-to-twelve repetition range with each set.

You are now coming along swimmingly and should be feeling very confident in yourself here. The next two steps cover less obvious points which are often overlooked.

Rest is just as important as training when you are trying to build. Probably less than 5% of the members at your local gym get their rest right and that's one of the main factors in their lack of real results.

You should try to hit the weights no more than three times per week if you are just starting out and no more than four times if you are already training regularly. Think of a rest day as a growth day, so it doesn't feel as if you are doing nothing with your time. This is where you grow, where your body builds.

We also need to quickly mention the importance of sleep when it comes to getting stronger and more muscular. You've probably been told countless times that you should get eight hours rest every night but how often do you actually do it? If you are like most people the answer is not often enough. Your body recovers from your day's work while you sleep and if you don't give it that basic need your results will suffer for it.

Contrary to what some people believe, you do not grow bigger or stronger while you are lifting weights. The adaptations happen when you are resting. Your body produces growth hormone while you are in a state of deep sleep and if you never allow this to happen you are ripping yourself off.

If you are like the overwhelming amount of gym users struggling for results then you are now in a massively advantageous position. The next time you stroll into your gym or local fitness centre you can do so safe in the knowledge that you officially know how to build muscle and are about to make giant leaps on your previous efforts. You don't necessarily need a personal trainer to guide you, you just need to learn the basic rules.
