NEW YORK (AP) ? The drop in a key interest rate to a 66-year low is a sign of one thing ? fear.

"When people just want to get their money back, there's not a lot of competition," said Bill O'Donnell, head of U.S. Treasury strategy at the Royal Bank of Scotland.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell Wednesday to its lowest level since November 1945 as worries about the European debt crisis roiled markets worldwide. Investors sold off stocks and plowed money into government bonds that are considered safe.
The search for hiding places was spurred by news out of Spain, the latest trouble spot in the region's debt crisis. The European Central Bank said Spaniards pulled billions in deposits out of their banks last month, raising concerns of a larger bank run.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury dropped to 1.62 percent, a steep drop from 1.74 percent late Tuesday. Rising demand for bonds pushes their yields lower.
When banks or big investors get frightened, their concern is no longer about making more money, O'Donnell said. They just want to avoid losing it. That's why traders on Wednesday bought German government two-year notes paying 0 percent, he said. They're simply handing their money over for safekeeping.
"People still have faith that they'll get their money back from the U.S. government," said Ira Jersey, U.S. interest rate strategist at Credit Suisse.
For the federal government, that trust means it can borrow at rock-bottom rates even as debts pile higher. Total federal debt now sits at a record $15.7 trillion. But it cost the government more to borrow when debts were lower. The 10-year yield has averaged 4.7 percent over the past 20 years.
The trend of higher debts and lower rates runs counter to an argument often heard in Washington. Certain Republicans often argue that rising federal debts will turn the U.S. into another Greece. Greece's shrinking economy and deep debts have pushed the unemployment rate to 21.7 percent and 10-year interest rates to 26 percent.
But the workings of the U.S. government bond market often break the economic law of supply and demand. Treasurys have plenty of unique advantages, including the world's biggest buyers, foreign central banks that don't play the stock market but need a safe place to stash money.
Size matters, too. The U.S. economy remains the world's largest, which means there's commerce to be taxed, O'Donnell said. If needed, the government could raise money by eliminating deductions, closing loopholes and adopting other reforms.
"With a few strokes of the pen, we could get our debts down by paying our taxes," he said. "There's something to tax, unlike other countries."
At $11 trillion, the U.S. government bond market dwarfs those of other countries, which makes Treasurys the easiest security to buy and sell in a hurry. Daily trading of Treasurys runs at $523 billion, roughly 17 times higher than trading in German bunds.
For the average American, the drop in Treasurys yields could mean even cheaper mortgages. The 10-year rate acts like an anchor for borrowing costs throughout the economy, and its plunge has knocked 30-year mortgages to record lows for four weeks in a row.
Last week, Freddie Mac said that the rate on the 30-year loan dipped to 3.78 percent, the lowest since long-term mortgages began in the 1950s. But the same fear that's shaking financial markets is likely to undermine Americans' confidence in the economy.
"Mortgage rates might go down," Jersey said. "But so will the appetite to buy homes. When the world is falling apart like this, confidence is likely to be hampered."
In other Treasury trading Wednesday, the yield on the 30-year bond dropped to 2.73 percent, down from 2.85 percent the day before. Its price jumped $2.50 for every $100 invested. The two-year Treasury dropped to 0.28 percent from 0.30 percent.
The three-month T-bill paid a yield of 0.07 percent.

Bobby Brown has been on the road with New Edition over the past few months for the group's 30th anniversary tour, and as the veteran entertainer gets ready to drop his fifth album, The Masterpiece, he's showering praise on contemporary stars like Chris Brown, Trey Songz and Usher who have furthered his R&B legacy.
During the height of New Edition's popularity in the '80s, Brown cemented a bad-boy image that stuck with him throughout the years, sometimes to his detriment. The new generation of R&B singers have faced their own unique challenges after being thrust into the spotlight, and maybe none as obvious as Chris Brown. Still, Bobby Brown thinks the young star isn't doing too badly for himself. "He's good; he's a church boy compared to me," Brown told MTV News matter-of-factly.
"Chris Brown is incredible. [He's] an incredible dancer, incredible singer. I respect him a lot because he's held his head up throughout everything that he's been through," Brown said, addressing the singer's much-publicized assault case against ex-girlfriend Rihanna. "He's only been through a little bit, but the boy is talented and you can't take talent away. Talent is given from God, you can't learn what he does. He's a bona fide entertainer and he should be respected."
Despite the setbacks Chris Breezy has faced, Bobby Brown is confident that he has what it takes to stick around in the long run. "He's still young and he's got a long way to go. I'm 30 years deep into this entertainment thing and I could see him 30 years from now, still doing what he does — flipping and singing and dancing," Brown continued. "And now he's getting ready to do a movie, so he's covering the spectrum of entertainment."
Chris isn't the only millennial entertainer who gets praise from Bobby Brown, though. "Trey Songz is definitely a talented brother, he's a talented writer, talented singer," he adds. "I just love the new generation of R&B singers, I think they're upholding what entertainment is about. I got it from Rick James and Michael Jackson, and I'm just grateful that they're taking what I love, what I'm passionate about, to the next level and keeping it young and fresh."
Usher, who will release his new album, Looking 4 Myself, just one week after The Masterpiece drops on June 5, is also on top of the list. "Before Usher even had a record out, I was training him, I'm surprised I didn't put him out," Brown said. "I worked with him a lot, teaching him different ways of training your body to dance and I'm proud of him. I'm glad he kept everything together."
Brown will continue his mission to entertain the masses with The Masterpiece, which is his first album in 14 years. And although he's got respect for the new crop of singers, he maintains that he needed to fly solo this time around. "This project is about me as an individual and me as far as growth in my life, so I didn't really want to go all commercial with it, and to make it something that became a spectacle." Brown admitted. "This is all about Bobby right now. It's just to get this off my heart and once this is released and people are able to hear it and appreciate it, then I can move forward with my life."
The The Masterpiece, is set for release on June 5, led by the single "Don't Let Me Die."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Knowledgeable baseball fans can argue all day whether it was the split-finger fastball ? and not performance-enhancing drugs ? that kept Roger Clemens on top of his game well into his 30s and beyond. His lawyers are trying to make that point at a trial where basic terms such as "Fenway Park" and "foul pole" require an explanation for a jury of nonfans.
Former journeyman catcher Charlie O'Brien was on the stand Wednesday for the defense at the Clemens perjury trial. He was fuzzy about lots of details, couldn't come up with a real name for the player known as "El Duque" and totally dissed the 1997 Toronto Blue Jays medical staff. But there was no doubt in his mind about two things: Clemens was not a cheater, and the weapon Clemens mastered at age 34 was the chief reason the 11-time All-Star was able to pitch for another decade.
"That pitch right there ? the split-finger fastball," O'Brien said.
O'Brien caught Clemens' games for much of the 1997 Blue Jays season, a crucial time period as prosecutors attempt to prove that Clemens lied when he told Congress in 2008 that he never took steroids and human growth hormone. After being discarded following 13 seasons with the Boston Red Sox ? Boston's then-general manager, Dan Duquette, said at the time that Clemens was in the "twilight" of his career ? a motivated Clemens arrived in Toronto and promptly won back-to-back Cy Young Awards in 1997-98.
But it was also in 1998 that Clemens met strength coach Brian McNamee, who says he injected the pitcher with steroids and HGH over the following three years and testified that he had the impression the Clemens had used steroids previously. The government used its cross-examination of witnesses Wednesday to reinforce its claim that Clemens turned to performance-enhancing drugs to help his aging body recover more quickly during the physically demanding major league seasons.
Also on the stand was Darrin Fletcher, Clemens' catcher from the 1998 Blue Jays season. Fletcher testified that he didn't see Clemens at a pool party at teammate Jose Canseco's house in Florida in June of that season, but Fletcher also said he left the party around 1:30 p.m. A government witness recalled seeing Clemens at the party later in the day. One of the lesser charges against Clemens is that he lied when he told Congress that he wasn't at the party at all.
In front of a jury consisting mostly of people who know little about baseball, Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin went for a visual effect to explain how the split-finger revolutionized Clemens' game, striking a pose as a left-handed hitter in front of O'Brien, who pantomimed the grip of a baseball while seated in the witness chair.
"It just totally changed how he could approach each hitter," O'Brien said.
O'Brien was even a better witness for the defense during cross-examination, when he volunteered that Clemens would refuse to throw scuffed baseballs because Clemens considered it "cheating." He said he once approached Clemens on the mound during a game with a scuffed ball and said, "This is a great ball to use." He said Clemens responded: "I don't need that."
"I don't think he'd cheat," O'Brien said.
"Would Roger Clemens do anything to cheat in baseball?" Hardin asked during the defense's following-up questioning. "No sir," O'Brien said.
O'Brien also said he would sometimes see multiple needles of vitamin B12 "lined up ready to go" in the Toronto clubhouse, supporting another statement made by Clemens that the government has sought to disprove.
As a sidelight, O'Brien said the Blue Jays' medical services at the time were "very poor" and that former Blue Jays head athletic trainer Tommy Craig was a nice guy but "might have been one of the worst trainers." O'Brien also had trouble recognizing Clemens in a Blue Jays team photo and couldn't explain to the jury the identity of the former New York Yankees pitcher known widely as El Duque. "What's his name, Roger?" O'Brien blurted out toward the defense table. Clemens didn't give the answer that baseball fans already know: Orlando Hernandez.
Fletcher was nearly as entertaining as he gave up some of Clemens' trade secrets as a pitcher. Clemens, for example, would purse his lips on the mound to ask for curveballs.
"You're not making a comeback any time are you, Roger?" Fletcher said. "I'm not giving anything away, am I?" Clemens laughed.
Fletcher caused laughter again when asked about the pool party. Fletcher indicated it would have left an impression if he had seen Clemens.
"I've always wanted to see Roger in a bathing suit," he said.
The day began with more testimony from Todd Howey, one of Clemens' high school teammates. Then came former Red Sox assistant general manager Steven August. Both spoke glowingly of Clemens' talent and work ethic, but the pace was again painfully slow ? even for a trial now in its seventh week. Among the rudimentary baseball terms explained to the jury: fungo bat, platoon player, won-loss record and the 1994 players' strike.
Prosecutor Gil Guerrero, perhaps out of exasperation with all of the testimonials that Clemens was receiving, at one point told August: "You understand he's not on trial for how great he was in baseball."

LBSU center fielder has a knack for being hit by a pitch, and it's just fine with him.
Talking about Brennan Metzger's talents as a four-year starter at Long Beach State requires mentioning his speed on the bases (42 career steals), his average of a hit a game the last three seasons, being third on the all-time list in doubles, his superb defense in center field (three errors in four seasons), and that he leads the 2012 Dirtbags in virtually every category.
But one area always begins the conversation:

Metzger has "taken a dose" of ball-inflicted pain 54 times in his career, leaving him two behind Bryan Kennedy on the program's all-time list.
Metzger was hit by a pitch eight times in 2009, 20 times in 2010 (tied for third all-time in a single season), 11 in 2011 and 15 times in 2012.
Metzger chuckled at the questions about his Craig Biggio-like ability. His talent comes natural, from his aggressive nature. He set the career record for HBP at Mission Hills High, too. He doesn't have a favorite because they all get him on base, though any that just nipped a piece of his jersey or the thick part of his shoulder were preferable to the few he took in the small of his back.
"I have a lot of favorites," he said. "They're all important because you get on base and that's a big part of baseball. There have been a few times I've crowded the plate looking for
one just because we needed a baserunner. But most just come naturally."
The one that hurt was a 94-mile per hour fastball he took on his elbow in a game against UC Santa Barbara as a freshman that took him out of the lineup for a month.
Metzger has had as much to do with the Dirtbags turning the season around after a heartbreaking start to the season - nine one-run losses, several walk-off defeats - as anyone.
A leadoff hitter much of his career, this season he's hit in every spot in the order other than second, eighth or ninth. He moved into the No. 5 spot when Big West Conference play began and he leads or is tied for the lead in 10 different categories just for conference games, including a .416 average, 19 runs scored, 21 RBIs, eight doubles, .484 on-base percentage and .558 slugging percentage.
He's made just two errors in the last three seasons, and one of the calls was specious. With inexperienced outfielders flanking him in center this season, Metzger has covered more acreage in Blair than a herd of cattle at an Alta-Dena dairy.
This weekend's series is highly personal for him. The Dirtbags can win the Big West title and earn a trip to the postseason by taking two of three from the Titans. It would be his first postseason in his final season.
When Metzger arrived, the Dirtbags had just won the 2008 Big West title and made their seventh postseason appearance in the last eight years. He had every reason to believe he would help continue that streak. Instead, the Dirtbags fell in the dirt and didn't get up.
"That was the opportunity I was looking forward to when I came to the program," he said. "So it's hard to realize this is our first real opportunity to win a title and go to the postseason. I don't think some of my teammates can appreciate it the way (senior catcher) Kellen Hoime and I do. We've had four years of waiting. It's our last shot."
Metzger is one of the few players in the last quadrennial to fully embrace the Dirtbag ethos and play the game the way it was formed by Dave Snow two decades earlier. It showed on his always-dirty jersey and on his frustrated face at the end of each season.
"That first year (2009) I was just trying to find my niche," he said. "I don't think we appreciated the fact that we had 11 players drafted off the 2008 team. That year I didn't play under control. I was amped up too much."
The 2010 season was the one that disappointed him most. The team had nine players who are playing pro baseball now, but it was erratic all season and then swooned, going 3-14 the rest of the season and putting a disrespectful tag on the career of head coach Mike Weathers, who announced his retirement late in the season.
"I was so excited going into that season, the whole team had real high expectations," he said. "Instead we wore Weathers out. Just knowing we didn't live up to what we had or the program's tradition was disappointing."
He was a draft-eligible junior after the 2011 season and was prepared to start a pro career, but he wasn't drafted, a victim of the new BBCOR bats that sucked the power out of the game and left him with a .267 average.
Coming back for a senior season has worked in his favor. Buckley moved him from the top of the lineup to the fifth spot because he had extra-base power and was simply clutch. Once known as the guy who would get on base and score, he became the guy who is driving in runs.
"The difference between last year and this is that I'm out of my head," he said, referring to over-thinking and over-analyzing things. "I like hitting where I am now. It's given me a chance to contribute in different ways."
"He's always been strong at (pitch recognition)," Buckley said.
"He uses the whole field now and he's become the one guy we let steal on his own because he makes good decisions. And he's always been a quality center fielder, one of the best defensive center fielders the program has ever had.
"He's having a career year and moving him down in the lineup stretched out our lineup strength. He's been very productive and has been our best hitter in two-out situations."
Plus, he has that high tolerance for pain going for him. This weekend, he'll take as many pitches off his body as it takes to win twice and finally get to the place he came to Long Beach for, the postseason.

LONDON (AP) ? Iran and other Middle East countries have been hit with a cunning computer virus that can eavesdrop on computer users and their co-workers and filch information from nearby cellphones, cybersecurity experts said Tuesday. And suspicion immediately fell on Israel as the culprit.
The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the "Flame" virus is unprecedented in size and complexity, with researcher Roel Schouwenberg marveling at its versatility.
"It can be used to spy on everything that a user is doing," he said.
Computers in Iran appear to have been particularly affected, and Kaspersky's conclusion that the virus was crafted at the behest of a national government fueled speculation it could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage against the Jewish state's archenemy.
The virus can activate a computer's audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and ? in one of its more novel functions? steal data from Bluetooth-enabled cellphones.
Schouwenberg said there is evidence to suggest that the people behind Flame also helped craft Stuxnet, a virus that is believed to have attacked nuclear centrifuges in Iran in 2010. Many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence.
Tehran has not said whether it lost any data to Flame, but a unit of the Iranian communications and information technology ministry said it has produced an anti-virus capable of identifying and removing Flame from its computers.
Israel's vice premier did little to deflect suspicion about the country's possible involvement in the cyberattack.
"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio when asked about Flame. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."
Researchers not involved in Flame's discovery were more skeptical of its sophistication than Kaspersky, with Richard Bejtlich of Virginia-based Mandiant saying the virus appeared similar to spyware used by the German government to monitor criminal suspects.
"There have been tools like this employed by high-end teams for many years," he said.
Colorado-based Webroot said the virus wasn't as complex or as stealthy as Stuxnet and was "a relatively easy threat to identify."
Flame is unusually large. Malicious programs collected by the British security firm Sophos averaged about 340 kilobytes in 2010, the same year that Kaspersky believes Flame first started spreading. Flame is 20 megabytes ? nearly 60 times that figure.
Alan Woodward, a professor of computing at the University of Surrey in England, said functions can be added or subtracted to the virus depending on what kind of espionage is desired, not unlike the way apps can be downloaded to a smartphone.
He was particularly struck by Flame's ability to turn an infected computer into a kind of "industrial vacuum cleaner," copying data from vulnerable cellphones or other Bluetooth wireless devices left near it.
"I don't believe I've seen it before," he said.
Udi Mokady, chief executive of Cyber-Ark, an Israeli developer of information security, said he believes four countries, in no particular order, have the know-how to develop so sophisticated a weapon: Israel, the U.S., China and Russia.
"It was 20 times more sophisticated than Stuxnet," with thousands of lines of code that took a large team, ample funding and months, if not years, to develop, he said. "It's a live program that communicates back to its master. It asks, 'Where should I go? What should I do now?' It's really almost like a science fiction movie."
It's not clear exactly what the virus was targeting. Kaspersky said it detected the program in hundreds of computers, mainly in Iran but also in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
The company would not give details on the victims except to say that they "range from individuals to certain state-related organizations or educational institutions."
Schouwenberg said stolen data was being sent to some 80 different servers, something that would give the virus' controllers time to adjust their tactics if they were discovered.
As for Flame's purpose, "maybe it's just espionage," he said. "Maybe it's also sabotage."

If you listen to China skeptics, its economy is facing dark clouds and turbulence in the next few years with growth poised to slow. A business travel group today announced a survey that anticipates a markedly different future.
Business travel spending in China will grow by 17% to $202 billion this year and increase another 21% to $245 billion in 2013, according to the Global Business Travel Association.
Growth in manufacturing, trade, jobs, business formation and infrastructure investment will boost that expansion, it said.
China today ranks second in the world in business travel, but is forecast to surpass the US ?as early as? 2015, the association said. A press release didn?t provide forecasts for that year. It projected China GDP growth of 8.2% this year and 8.9% next year.
Last year, US business spending totaled $250 billion versus $182 billion for China, the association said.
Big growth in travel would likely benefit a number of publicly trade Chinese companies, including airlines such as Air China, booking agencies such as Ctrip and Elong, and hotel chains such as China Lodging.

I literally know nothing about NASCAR, nor do I drink Jim Beam.? Off the top of my head, I can, at best, name fifteen drivers on the circuit, and that?s because I live in the South.? I don?t know who drives what car, who represents which sponsors, which driver performs better on what track or what the hell a restrictor plate is.? Yet there I sit, atop the leader board, in all my glory, spewing trash talk from my NASCAR mountaintop.? All luck, no skill.? No research, only randomness.? So what, I ask you, is the point?
Come autumn, American males will spend weeks dissecting NFL rosters.? We?ll spend way too much time reading Street & Smith magazines, along with countless hours planning a chicken wing and beer-soaked draft party, only to complain when some random geek a few cubicles down, who knows nothing about football, wins our fantasy league.
This year, I am that random geek.

A lawsuit filed Friday by former Penn State President Graham Spanier against the university shows the investigation into what others knew about the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse accusations, and when, may be far from over.
Spanier, who was removed from office by Penn State trustees on Nov. 9 ? four days after Sandusky was charged ? is seeking the court?s help in getting access to a trove of emails from 1998 through 2004.
According to the lawsuit, filed in Centre County court, the emails were thought not to be recoverable until a few weeks ago.
The disclosure about the new information comes on the eve of Sandusky?s trial on charges that he sexually molested 10 boys between 1994 and 2008. Jury selection for the former Penn State assistant football coach?s case is scheduled to start June 5.
Many of the alleged incidents of abuses are said to have occurred on the Penn State campus, which has caused investigators to focus on what administrators there knew.
Nothing in Spanier?s lawsuit reveals any direct contents of the new documents. Still, it?s a hugely important time frame that, depending upon what has been recovered, could be a bonanza for prosecutors. That time span, if accurately represented in the suit, could potentially cover:
? A 1998 molestation allegation against Sandusky that was investigated by Penn State?s university police but did not result in charges at the time.
? The period surrounding Sandusky?s surprising retirement as head football coach Joe Paterno?s defensive coordinator the end of the 1999 football season.
? A 2001 incident in which a graduate assistant saw and reported Sandusky?s alleged assault on a boy in the football team?s showers. Spanier, whom The Chronicle of Higher Education recently listed as the third-highest paid public university president in the 2011 fiscal year with earnings of $1,068,763, has been considered a possible target of the ongoing Sandusky investigation.
State Attorney General Linda Kelly, in her initial news conference on the charges last November, made a point of noting that Paterno was not a target of the ongoing criminal probe.
At the same news conference, Kelly was far less clear-cut about Spanier?s status, stating only that with regard to the president she could not go beyond what is in the grand jury presentment because the case is still active.
In the grand jury presentment, Spanier is reported to have told jurors that even though he signed a document following the 2001 shower incident barring Sandusky from bringing children from his Second Mile Foundation onto the Penn State campus, he didn?t know the triggering incident was sexual in nature.
Attempts to reach attorneys for Spanier for additional comment on the suit Friday night were not successful.
Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley, now on leave, and retired Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz have been charged with failing to report that incident to police and later lying to the grand jury about what they knew about it.
New information that comes out of the emails being sought could have implications for their case.
Attempts to reach attorneys for Curley and Schultz Friday night were not successful.
According to Spanier?s lawsuit, when Spanier, Paterno and other high-ranking administrators appeared before the state grand jury investigating Sandusky last year, everyone thought a new email system installed at Penn State in 2004 had eliminated emails prior to that time.
Somehow ? and the court documents do not make it clear how ? at least some of those earlier emails became retrievable ?in recent months.? A spokesman for Kelly declined comment about the investigation Friday, as per office policy on cases before a grand jury.
But what is known now is that the find set off a nervous exchange of letters this spring, which were attached as exhibits in Spanier?s lawsuit. Spanier states in his suit that he asked Penn State officials for a chance to review his old files before speaking to investigators with the Freeh Group, hired by trustees last fall to head their internal investigation into the Sandusky scandal.
The university, in an April 20 letter from outside counsel Frank Guadagnino, refused, stating in part: ?We have received an explicit instruction from the deputy attorney general not to share the requested information for fear of compromising the commonwealth?s ongoing investigation.?
On April 25, writing directly to Freeh, Spanier?s attorneys asked for Freeh?s help in changing the university?s mind, but also insisted that they would not permit Spanier to talk to the internal examiners without a chance to review his files.
?We cannot repeat the episode from last year (2011) in which our client was permitted to be interviewed by the attorney general?s office and, later, appear in front of a grand jury with absolutely no preparation, including no review of any relevant documents,? that letter reads.
Penn State spokesman Dave La Torre issued an email statement in which he declined comment on the specifics of Spanier?s lawsuit.
?However,? La Torre said, ?the university has cooperated fully with the Office of Attorney General and the Freeh Group and expects all of its faculty, staff and administrators, including Dr. Spanier, to cooperate to the fullest extent.
?The university believes it has done nothing that would prevent Dr. Spanier from meeting with the Freeh Group, which has already met with hundreds of university employees.?

The story says Spanier wants to review the 'newly discovered' 'trove' of 1998-2004 emails before meeting with Free's staff.
Freeh's past accomplishments - the ones that made him perfect to head up this investigation - include (wrongly) leaking Richard Jewell's name to the press as the Olympic Park 'bomber', Ruby Ridge, Waco, Wen Ho Lee, Waco, Khobar Towers, TWA Flight 800, Robert Hanssen, blocking intelligence gathering of the political donations of the Republic of China to the Clinton reelection campaign, and the murder/suicide investigation of Vince Foster, among other triumphs.
These emails aren't subject to Pennsylvania's state open records law in part because Penn State isn't a 'state school' but one of four 'state-related' schools under the Commonwealth System of Higher Education.
